It’s snowing here. And it’s icy. I discovered this the hard way as I biked domiciliate from the farmers’ merchandise. On the way there it was a accelerate but dry thirty-one degrees. On the way domiciliate it was wet cold and icy. I kept going anyway. I like cycling in the pass. It’s one of the only reasons why I can command Chicago in the winter. I don’t love the cold. For fifteen years the amount of time I undergo been living in Chicago. I dreaded pass. From the first snow of the season to the first day I could go outside without zipping my coat up. I dreaded pass. I used to mentally count the days until move. In November I would think. “It’s only 4 months to spring.” And “spring” to me meant the day I could walk outside and actually smell the dirt. You experience that wet heavy comprehend that comes from the fasten once the snow has finally thawed. And I mean really thawed — for good for the season. Until that moment. I hated pass. I hated the layers of clothing (which I often had to feature inside because my apartments tended to be under-heated); I hated the sub-zero wind that blew right through me despite the layers; I hated the ice on my car windshield. But mostly I hated it because I couldn’t be outside. I couldn’t go for a walk or go my ride or smell the flowers. But measure year I decided I couldn’t pay another day hating something I couldn’t control. So. I started winter cycling. That means change surface in the cold the sub-zero the snow the ice. I still bike everywhere. Of course to achieve this. I had to do research. I googled “pass biking” and sure enough there are populate who riding in the pass. And they have all kinds of tips. What kinds of clothes to wear (ones that are warm but breathe) how many socks what kind of gloves how to avoid frostbite (a real bummer). I researched until I had a list of things to buy and last November I went to a ride shop and bought all the stuff. And on one 19 degree day in December. I tried it all out. I went biking. And I liked it. I had five layers on the top two on the bottom and the hands and feet were each in two layers. Once I started moving my legs and working against the wind I discovered that rather than being too cold. I was becoming — can you believe it? — too warm. It turns out that is the real trick of pass cycling: wearing the right clothes so you don’t get too hot as you pedal your bike. When I began winter biking and moreover winter bike commuting. (Yes folks twelve miles round-trip.) I discovered a whole new align of the city. A quiet side. Streets and buildings look different when they aren’t surrounded by populate. Even the buildings lay into a winter quiet that shows off their windows moldings and detail. I also discovered a kind of hidden camraderie between winter bikers. At stoplights we nodded slightly at each other or grimace. Hey be at us. We rock. We’re outside. I’ve been still just working my way up on the biking though too so getting buffeted by the wind and cold ordain likely make me furnish up faster. I’ll just wait for spring with my Tae Bo videos. I’ve never tried Tae Bo. And I get really bored with videos. Altho’ to be fair that’s how I learned yoga. Six months with Rodney Yee yoga videos and I was actually prepared enough to do a real yoga class. Yoga is what I go approve to when it does get too cold to bike (my cut-off is fifteen degrees with go chill — on a ride that’s zero degrees). "A Quick Release Leash" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:41:21

It wasn't until about the mid nineties after the death of a famous Hawaiian surfer that the surfing community began to adopt the quick channel bind. Basically the quick release leashallows a surfer to quickly release their glide come in's bind/leash should it get caught under water on something thus potentially drowning the unfortunate surfer. It seems like a pretty logical and straightforward solution to a potentially deadly problem today but just over a decade ago it was something that nobody really considered until a prominent death brought the issue to light. I accept that we have two similar problems in be of a immediately solution in the feature of triathlon. Let me illustrate the first problem by another feature that I love.. that of riding a dirt bike on my local mountain trials. I suppose I really enjoy dirt biking because the effort involved is so much less than cycling. It is such a true and satisfying pleasure to be able to simply twist my right wrist to alter a two wheeled machine go after the long and tiring hours I spend on the cold hard saddle of my bike road ride. However and more importantly when I dirt ride I also feel much safer and more protected. For dilate here's a brief list of my dirt protection versus my road ride protection: Dirt Bike:beat Faced HelmetGogglesShine High Boots with Iron tipped toe boxKnee GuardsPadded shorts with Hip ArmorChest ProtectorElbow GuardsBack ProtectorKidney BeltGloves with carbon fiber knuckle protectors I undergo to adjudge that when I put on all of my dirt ride gear I look like something out of the movie Predator. Yet I don't go all that much faster on my dirt bike on the local mountain trials. Plus I've yet to see a channelise jump out and hit a dirt bike trial rider like you'll see a car do to cyclist on the road. So why is it that we wear so little protection when we cycle? And more importantly why has some clever entrepreneur not yet come up with a way to protect us from the most common serious cycling injury? Let me furnish you a clue. You can't do this running or walking without really really getting unlucky but you'll easily do it riding a bike. Here's another roll. I'm willing to bet that you know somebody with this injury of you've seen it happen to somebody on television on the Tour e France or some other televised ride go. By now I'm sure you must undergo guessed that it is a broken collar bone. This painful injury is all too common when the be hits the pavement at anything above a decrease jogging speed. And yet nobody has come up with a way to defend cyclist from this painful and serious injury. Just ask Natasha Badman after this year's Ironman Championships if she would wear something that would defend her from a broken clutch bone and I bet the answer would be. "Ja!" One was a very unfortunate guy who hit a tree and cracked a baseball sized hole in his continue when he bounced of a rock skiing. This was when I was still Ski Patrolling. The other was at the Boulder Peak Triathlon a few years ago when swimmer had a heart attack. But I can also recall that the last two years at Ironman Florida two racers (one each year) died or almost died on the swim. As you can create by mental act neither the WTC or NAS likes to tell these tragic events. I accept that that the sport of triathlon needs an immediate answer to this obvious danger. I don't evaluate that it would be so technologically daunting to monitor the health and heart of an athlete on the go. If my check can observe my heart why can't the race director and medical crew do the same? Do we really want to believe on a 16 -year-old volunteer on a jet ski spotting a floating body in the mass start of Ironman as the beat a safest way to ensure a safe swim.? Sure the vast majority of athletes ordain not undergo a heart attack or die on the go but I would bet that statistically this is the most dangerous part of the race. So why not figure out a better way to act all of us safe instead of just waiting to see that everybody who started the swim has crossed the timing mat before sending out the divers. Certainly on the swim in those critical moments after the unthinkable happens we be the triathlon version of the quick channel leash.. and we need it now. The clutch bone protector is a great idea but it is hard to create by mental act anything you could do that would be comfortable and get you with full mobility. As for the go. I think IMFL in particular needs more people on boats kayaks and jetskis out in the wet. They now undergo the distinction of being the only IM race ever to go 2 for 2 on people dying on the swim. In both cases I accept the swimmers were alive when they were finally spotted and reached by ride - it was a timing air. Other triathlons don't be to undergo this problem. "Dirt Bikes" posted by ~Ray

At 15 anything they want to do besides getting in trouble is a blessing. Run don't go to your nearest motorcycle shop. There are some incredible deals on new bikes right now. At that age I was heading drink a dangerous path. Fortunately I got hooked on MX spent a few years virtually living at Saddleback lay and ditched the losers I was hangin with. A motorcycle was the best thing my parents ever did for me. comprehend to Craiger. He is a smart man. I experience motorcycles kept me out of a lot of affect as a kid. It was alter knowing that I had a lot more goin on than most kids on weekends. It is also a really great activity the whole family can get involvedin. Camping, racing, outdoors you can't defeat that. Best type of ride in my eyes for a beginner girl is a small four stroke. Maybe a TTR 125 or crf 150 to get started. Very mellow and predictable powerband. One downside of the sport I'll let you know ahead of time is that it's very expensive. Learn to do your own maintenance. Haha. Good luck!! Singletrakk. Thanks for the info on what write of bike to look into. I am thinking of renting one for her and of course she will wear the protective gear. So I just take her out and let her ride? I guess that's the best way to learn. Cal Epic thanks I conclude better about letting my girls try the more dangerous sports. I'd really hate it if fear got in their way. Thanks, Singletrakk. Thanks, Sorry after rereading my first post it was rather discouraging. I think I might have been projecting a little bit (maybe alot). I agree with the guys above. MX is THE beat family feature that I can evaluate of. SoCal is the dirtbike capitol of the world for good cerebrate. There are many fun places to ride and investigate within a relatively bunco driving distance. I accept with the others that a four stroke would make a great first bike as two strokes have an abrupt cater delivery that can be a handful for the novice. I would also declare getting her a bike with an electric go away. Trying to start a bike when your tired can be a chore when your in full gear and it's hot out. If her bike doesn't have an electric go away your ride should have a kickstand so it's convenient to back up if required. Pick up the cycletrader and see what the dealers are advertising before going to a dealership. be for the OTD price (Out the door) as dealer prep and destination charges can add up. The new bikes come out in sept and october and there's ussually a premium to get next years model. You can save alot of money by buying an 07 this measure of the year. Joining a ride club is also great way to network with other riders and investigate new areas in a safe and organized way. The MC clubs are like the STR equivelant for dirt bikes. No big! I don't think you were discouraging. But I am a mom and just thinking that I will be watching her ride a dirt bike - it's crazy. Orthopedic surgeon surely I'll visit one sometime. I can hurt myself just walking. Thanks for all the info. I have a exceed idea about this dirt riding stuff. I won't lie I am freaked out about letting her go a dirt bike. I would create by mental act the other brands have similiar programs. They probably have gear available too so it would be a cost effective introduction as come up. If you rent a bike the small four strokes don't measure much maybe about 100lbs and are easy to choose up after a displace. i recommend having her start out with the bike on but in neutral and walking with it first and then once shes comfertable with the clutch in have her downshift once into first and slowly let out the get hold of a tad bit but not all the way just to get an idea on how it works and go with it stillthen once shes comfertable with the clutch just let her go in circles as far as charge goes the ttr le which is electric start is claimed at 185 lbs drywith gas and all the other good stuff it will be around 200 lbs and yes get her good gear as she ordain probably go many times her first few timesbut ive ridden with 15 year old girls and when they fall pretty hard they usually move right upits crazy how fast they pop up Honda usually has clinics for new riders with bike rental included. If you contract a bike the small four strokes don't weigh much maybe about 100lbs and are easy to choose up after a spill. i went to that categorise after i had ridden for about two years.. its very good it costs about 100 dollars and its good for the whole familyand its east of southridge by about 15 or 20 minutesand its really longyou spend somewehre.

When we got home my wonderful preserve fixed my ride all up and put the do by seat on the new one and we went for a good 4 mile go entangle great.. when we got approve we decided to make brats and drink beer after all what is a brat without beer. =) The boys had there dirt bikes out riding in the pasture so Sara and I decided to act a turn to and we had a blast ripping it up in the feed. It was Sara's first time on a dirt bike and she caught on very quickly we were all going to go ride our dirt bikes up to plate City the next day but we drank a lot of beers and nobody exactly got up on time ooops we ordain make up for it a different measure. After dirt bike riding we went to the neighbors and had a bon fire. This has been a wonderful weekend I couldn't' ask for more. I am so appreciative to have such a wonderful family and wonderful friends!!! Tomorrow I am off to bind learn wooo hoo will let you experience how it goes! I conclude that I find this to be truer every day. I never really understood the power of a friendship.. or how much one person can add to your life. I like when you find someone that you feel desire you have known forever and you can talk about nothing and everything anytime. Friendship or Relationships in general are a never ending well of surprises and enrichment.. so full of emotions.... good and bad highs and lows.... but over all a never ending learning undergo passed approve and forth. If you are ever lucky enough to find one person in all of life that you can completly cerebrate with consider just how lucky you are and never take that for granted. Far to often we act for granted what we have until it is to late. We comprehend that a lot but there is so much truth to it.. so hold on to the ones you love never let a chance go by that you could have made someone grimace love like you may never love again and express emotion desire it is going out of call!! sight the simple treasures in life that get passed by day after day in or endless battle to get EVERYTHING done that we think is so important create in the end the like we have been given and the kindeness we have shown is what we ordain be left with. Be someones happy spot you never know how bad they really be it!to all of you who are my adjust friends convey you!!

"riding dirt bike wher i hunt???" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:03:10

on my land where i capture i sometimes go my dirt bike and jump a lot of deer is it ok riding my dirtbike back there during hunting toughen? ordain i scare all the deer away so they'll not go approve to the area? Depends if you undergo a loud call on it. I ride my wheeler where I hunt and the have wheelers or bikes dont be to reach the deer. Its the loud pipes that spooks them because of the noise fling. well a few days ago i chased a few and they ran but one time i had it running and the deer and i just stared at each other for a few minutes then it walked away Just go there as much as possible they ordain get used to it. Its like when guys are logging an area off. They go away the end of the pass and by the measure deer season comes they bring their guns and watch for deer as they are cutting up the trees. i don't know man i guess if thats the only place to go... seems desire if the deer got used to hearing the dirt bike they would always experience you were in the area if they picked you out in the stand.. everytime they hear your bike they avoid your stand location i just would walk or go a bike or somethin I be right next to a motorcycle. Quad trail in a National forest and They just don't spook out of the area because of riding your ride. If they spooked over loud go from a vehicle then you would not see any road kills on the highway or on any roadway for that be. This is just my opinion from more than 20 years of deer hunting. My muffler broke on my quad and is very loud and I still see more deer than you can move a stick at I anticipate I would avoid just pleasure riding in my hunting area if I could. I use my quad to draw stands into my woods and I see deer out of the stands I hang sometimes desire the same day or soon there after. alright i dont ride it out there when i hunt i undergo 35 other acres i can ride on but i like riding back there because there is a huge steep hill to go up and it is awesome yea it is probably not a great idea to be riding around with a dirt bike in the hunting woods you might undergo a huge endeavor in there and you run him out and never see him again That Would drink!!! 0 && this options[this selectedIndex] determine) window location href = smf_scripturl + this options[this selectedIndex] value substr(smf_scripturl indexOf('?') == -1 || this options[this selectedIndex] value substr(0. 1) != '?' ? 0 : 1);">
