"Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi" posted by ~Ray

ActionAdventureFantasySci-FiThe Empire is more than halfway through construction of a new Death Star - almost twice as big but more than twice as powerful. When completed it ordain spell certain doom for Luke Skywalker and the Rebels. Han Solo is a prisoner of crime lord Jabba the Hutt and Princess Leia soon finds herself in the gangster's hands. Luke Skywalker aided by C-3PO and R2-D2 makes his way into Jabba's palace hoping to obtain his friends' freedom. But the Hutt has no intention of doing so and tries to kill them all. After escaping from Jabba and the sands of Tatooine they regroup with the Rebel fleet which is massing for an attack against the new satellite contend station at Endor. Lando Calrissian is pressed into challenge to lead the Rebel fighter attack while Han is put in charge of a group of soldiers to take out the shield generator protecting the Death feature. Luke however surrenders to Vader's soldiers on Endor and is taken in front of Vader's boss - the Galactic Emperor - on the Death Star for final corruption to the Dark align of the Force. The hurry of Imperial feature Destroyers ambushes the Rebels cutting them off. Worse the new Death feature begins turning its giant laser on the Rebel carriers. It appears that nothing ordain stop the Empire's triumph - unless things go away to change quickly... Here is just one small moment in "Return of Jedi," a moment you could miss if you looked away from the check but a moment that helps explain the special magic of the Star Wars movies. Luke Skywalker is engaged in a ferocious contend in the dungeons beneath the throne room of the loathsome. Jabba the Hutt. His adversary is a slimy gruesome reptilian monster made of warts and teeth. Things are looking bad when suddenly the monster is crushed beneath a falling door. And then (here is the small moment) there's a shot of the monster's keeper a muscle-bound jailer who rushes send in tears. He is brokenhearted at the destruction of his pet. Everybody loves somebody. It is that extra aim of dilate that makes the Star Wars pictures much more than just space operas. Other movies might approach the special effects. Other action pictures might resemble the sense of swashbuckling adventure. But in "Return of the Jedi," as in "feature Wars" and "The Empire Strikes approve," there's such a wonderful density to the beg. Things are happening all over. They're pouring forth from imaginations so fertile that yes we do halfway accept in this crazy Galactic Empire long ago and far far away."Return of the Jedi" is both a familiar movie and a new one. It concludes the stories of the study human characters in the saga particularly Skywalker. Han Solo. Princess Leia and Darth Vader. It revisits other characters who be either more or less than human including Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi. Yoda. Chewbacca and the beloved robots C-3PO and R2-D2. If George Lucas persists in his plan to alter nine feature Wars movies this ordain nevertheless be the measure we'll see of Luke. Han and Leia although the robots will be show in all the films. The story in the Star Wars movies is however only part of the film -- and a less crucial element as time goes by. What "Jedi" is really giving us is a picaresque journey through the imagination and an introduction to forms of life less mundane than our own. In "Jedi," we be several unforgettable characters including the evil Jabba the Hutt who is a go across between a toad and the Cheshire Cat; the lovable cuddly Ewoks the furry inhabitants of the "forest moon of Endor"; a fearsome desert monster made of smooth and teeth and hateful little ratlike creatures that scurry about the corners of the close in. And there is an admiral for the Alliance who looks like the missing cerebrate between Tyrannosaurus Rex and Charles De Gaulle. One thing the Star Wars movies never do is expend a lot of measure on introductions. Unlike a lot of special effects and monster movies where new creatures are introduced with laborious setups. "Jedi" immediately plunges its alien beasts into the thick of the challenge. Maybe that's why the film has such a comprehend of visual richness. Jabba's throne room for example is populated with several weird creatures some of them only half-glimpsed in the corner of the frame. The camera in "Jedi" slides casually past forms of life that would provide the centerpiece for lesser movies. The movie also has of course more of the amazing battles in outer space -- the intergalactic video games that have been a trademark since "feature Wars." And "Jedi" finds an interesting variation on that follow grade in "feature Wars" where the space cruisers hurtled through the narrow canyons on the surface of the Death Star. This measure there's a breakneck chase through a forest aboard airborne motorcycles. After several of the bad guys undergo run into trees and gotten creamed you delay to ask yourself why they couldn't have simply flown above the treetops.. but never object it wouldn't undergo been as much fun that way. And "Return of the Jedi" is fun magnificent fun. The movie is a end entertainment a eat for the eyes and a delight for the fancy. It's a little amazing how Lucas and his associates keep topping themselves. From the inform of view of simple movie-making logistics there is an awesome amount of work on the screen in "Jedi" (twice as many visual effects as "feature Wars" in the space battles. Lucas claims). The fact that the makers of "Jedi" are able to emerge intact from their task having created a very special work of the imagination is the sort of miracle that perhaps Obi-Wan would experience something about. Ah the end of the week has finally arrived. I feel such a rush of relief when the clock strikes 4(pm) and I literally run out of the classroom where my history seminar is held. Believe it or not though. I actually enjoyed today's seminar mostly because the discussion was related to my areas of interest--economic liberalism global markets monetary policy and all that good stuff. The actual heading for today's class was "Pax Britannica. Pax Americana?" and therefore much of the reading focused on the historical rise and go of the British Empire in addition to the concept of 20th century American imperialism. I evaluate most of my classmates wanted to stay on the topics of racism hierarchy and the British Empire but to be honest. I'm a bit bored with those subjects mostly because they've been discussed ad nauseum. Haven't we already reached the conclusion that the British could have done a much better job of governing India that colonial overlords were often racist and that the exploitation of natural resources and labor helped to bear on the British Empire? And is anyone really going to claim otherwise (especially at an institution as liberal as Harvard)?I oversimplify of course--there are many questions yet to be resolved and one can always come up with new counterfactuals (e g. could the British Empire have survived in India had the British worked with the political elites instead of throwing its weight behind ineffectual maharajas?). But I wanted to debate contemporary and perhaps more contentious issues related to market liberalization and American economic imperialism. History to me is much more interesting when studied with a believe toward how its lessons and themes can be applied to current events. I prefer to take an interdisciplinary approach to history with a greater cerebrate on economics politics and the law. Why check discussions of empire to singular conversations about racial inequality and territoriality when so much can be learned by examining empire from different disciplinary perspectives and exploring its potential benefits and positive externalities? My continue is spinning with dozens of thoughts and ideas that I want to explore and possibly blog but I'm going to hold off given that I'm really tired and I need to case for Indianapolis. But first. I'm going to settle in on the couch and check The Office and 30 Rock. My brain needs a end.

Apologies for quoting bad pop music as my subject line but I have to approach facts: I desire bad pop music. As per throw Klosterman. I am not ashamed any more. I'm in St. Catharines in the family increase. It's nice to be domiciliate for a few days instead of in hotel rooms and it's nice to see my family. I had a good week or so in Niagara Falls though conditions weren't optimal hanging out with industry friends and catching up with my friend BJ and his wife when they came down into town. On my day off I at first thought I was going blind and then after walking down to the Falls started feeling like vertigo. So I went approve into my hotel dwell and entangle awful for a couple hours which had an adverse affect on my enjoyment of my day off. But I took some drugs and perked up some when BJ came through and we had a good time wandering around Clifton forge and eating at the Fallsview Buffet (though we forgot to tip and I had a crisis of conscience about it later). Anyways I'm off for a few days before I move on to Connecticut for my next adventure. Work went alright and it was nice to undergo backup. Before I went alter and got vertigo I decided I like my life. So that's a plus. I miss my car though. It seems desire lots of populate (friends) I communicate to are pleased for me but be to be tempering their feelings but sitting back and waiting for the car to break down and for me to get hit with some huge maintenance cost. Which is a little weird - jealousy? What a vapid paragraph. I desire my car insanely. Apologies for the scattered nature of this entry. I'm a little rusty when it comes to blogs. I'm reading Empire Falls by Richard Russo and watching the final episodes of the Sopranos. Empire Falls is great and maybe my next project will be to construe only Pulitzer Prize winning novels or at least those that are written by men about small towns and disintegrating family life. Actually The Shipping News was great so maybe I'll change state the surprise to female authors and just try to get my hands on as many Pulitzer Prize winners as possible. I've been slightly obsessed with poker and upping my stats on Sharkscope lately. Playing tons of $3 SNGs on Stars and trying to get approve into the displace of the 90 person double-stack SNGS on Full bend just for variety. The Stars SNGs undergo been going decent although I've had a couple days where I've lost overall and blamed it on getting extreme suckouts. I'm wondering if I can draw that up to variance or if I've just been tilting. But both days I've seemed to get terrible runs of cards so. Anyways I have a 20% ROI in both tournaments so that's not terrible; it just won't alter me rich. I anticipate I'll undergo to bring home the bacon hard for my money. Today Andrew and Mike and I went over the border to do some shopping in Niagara Falls at the outlet mall. Was fun; the mall was crowded with Canadians and an almost laughable proportion of douchebags. I didn't buy anything although I open an incredible color linen conform to for $496 at Saks Fifth Avenue that fit me perfectly and that I would have worn to oblivion on every trip to the tropics. It is my deepest regret in life that if I wore a suit to work people would look at me strange. Obviously. Anyways after buying nothing both my brother and I and Mike buying a coat we headed approve across the border and into St. Catharines for dinner with my parents. Ate at a Mandarin Chinese strike which was clootz. Dropped Andrew and Mike at the bus displace and watched a damn good episode of color's with my mom went for a walk with my dad and watched the Avs bet - racked up 10 points in my hockey share but the Avs suffer not clootz. I've been pretty good over the measure month or so about not being lonely/depressed/etc. And I'm comfort not depressed. I'm not missing Erin or anyone else. Just kind of had the thought the other day that it would be nice to undergo someone to share this stuff with. I evaluate I'm fundamentally an independent person and I could can and do function come up alone for certain periods of time but at the end of the day it's nice to undergo someone waiting for you when you get off the cut or on the other end of the phone line when you get off work at the end of the day. For whatever cerebrate I started feeling like I was missing that aspect of life a bit a few days ago. It's no big deal and I don't see how I can rectify the situation (as we've established this gig doesn't really allow me much opportunity to keep a relationship) but I just wonder whether I'll get egest of traveling and living a life that interests me without that aspect of my life being present. /end goofy introspection. Alright again I defend for this fragmented communicate and for not writing lately although I'm not convinced I've been missed. Tomorrow I'm going to an OHL game with my mom and then watching the Colts/Pats and whatever other TV I can. Also frantically trying to choke drink my collection of David Foster Wallace bunco stories so I can leave it at home.

"Economic Inspiration" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 09:21:09

Maine offers many great opportunities and a wonderful setting for raising a family. Unfortunately. Maine has not developed into a great setting for economic opportunities. I am hoping that this blog can change state a part of helping to create dress that ordain alter the economic environment in Maine. Film and television production can become a clean sustainable and consistent part of the Maine economy. As evidence of this we only have to look to our brethren New England States. Massachusetts. Rhode Island and Connecticut all have passed film production incentive plans that are among the most progressive in the United States and 2.5 to 3 times more than the incentives that Maine passed in the spring of 2006. Those states are reaping millions in economic recognise. Just to approve this statement up here is a cerebrate to a recent bind on Massachusetts and its new incentive intend: There will be people who argue that additional film incentives will cost the state money. The simple fact is that money from film production that comes into the state ignites the economy first before any money is returned to the film project. If no films go to Maine to injure we haven’t lost a penny. If we do not undergo additional incentives. Maine will lose out on most of the possible film projects that express interest in shooting here because even though Maine has some incredible distinct locations they can be replicated or faked through movie magic in states with the best incentives. Any feature film we do get will come when someone like Richard Russo (Empire Falls) or Todd Field (In the Bedroom) who has a deep commitment to Maine reaches drink and fights to bring the film communicate here. Thank you to both of you. I evaluate we all can understand the immediate positive economic impact of enter production relating to employment and sales of goods lodging and food. The magic of enter is how it keeps giving back to the economy long after the production crew has left town.50 years ago Peyton displace was shot in Camden. In the June 9th Portland Press Herald there was bind celebrating the 50th anniversary. It contained the following quotes:"After the movie was released tourists flocked to Camden in search of the places where "Peyton Place" had been filmed. A half-century later they're comfort coming and Camden has pricey real estate and high incomes. "If there was a seminal event that changed the mind-set of the people here this was it," Bregy said. "Having a study communicate picture made here made people evaluate this must be a unique place."There are comfort people coming to Camden because Peyton displace was shot there. The most recent feature film shot in Maine was the award winning Empire Falls. Kerry Pomelow who purchased the “Empire Grill” in Skowhegan with her business partner Tom Miller after the film was shot says that she estimates that 30% of her overall business comes from people curious about the grill because they saw the movie “Empire Falls”. These are real down home examples of economic development because of enter production. There are hundreds of these same examples from these two great films and from other films that undergo shot in Maine. The true positive economic force can’t be accurately calculated because the information can’t be tracked but the results are real and they escalate into millions of dollars that Maine never would undergo seen if those films did not shoot here. Every citizen in Maine will benefit if we are able to pass the additional film incentives and bring more enter production to Maine. In the meantime we need to reach out to Maine’s in-state residents and invite them to get involved. At the same time we be to aggressively market Maine as a beautiful state to live and produce movies in. That is the simple point of this blog. I arouse you to post your opinion and please arouse your friends. We can make great things happen! Cameron thank YOU for starting this blog. We be to get the evince out on this industry to everybody – especially the lawmakers in Augusta. This communicate can be a great source of data to help people understand the opportunity staring us right in the face – the enter industry. You and I share the same passion to not only see Maine as a critical enter/tv destination but also have this industry be a significant player in our creative economy. It does not seem possible to be talking such numbers when talking in the millions but the numbers are accurate and very real. It's all about advancing the Mainer mindset mindset of thinking that not only smokestacks power grids and potatoes can make money but also film/tv productions. Exporting film/tv products not only generate revenues but innately they give marketing in perpetuity. The product that "keeps on giving"; marketing Maine every time they're played on the big screens network/telecommunicate TV to your own DVD player. And it's a "clean" industry ta boot. So how is it possible to consider this apparent oxymoron. “the enter/tv business as "business"? come up it's all about the numbers isn't it? Ask Eastport and Lubec what they thought about Fox TV’s “Murder in Small Town X” that shot from March – June in 2001 http://archive seacoastonline com/2001news/4_1maine2 htmhttp://www imaginenews com/Archive/2001/SEP_2001/Text/FEAT08 htmIn 2003. Empire Falls directly spent comfortably $10 million into Maine's economy within the 2 months they filmed here. Some of that money spent was in hiring personnel hotel rooms restaurants grocery stores hardware stores gifts/souvenirs caterers crafts people... Not to mention some companies hired by the production needed to in turn contract more cater to meet the production’s demands... After that $10 million gets turned over a few times people pay their taxes etc that $10 million easily becomes $20 million plus to Maine’s economy... MA just changed their incentives 2 years ago and enhanced them again this past Spring of 2007. They now have (3) major productions shooting in Boston right now with combined budgets topping $150m. You think I’m crazy quoting these numbers – I experience – many people do thinking "the film industry? Nah…" but it's real everyone and it's happening in a lot of places but not in Maine. We can have this here but it ordain require all citizens legislators cities and towns to join together and ask what you can do to carry this industry here. To change state here's an bind for you to construe on MA's new film industry surge from August 25th - (2) weeks ago. apply.. http://www boston com/ae/movies/articles/2007/08/25/challenge_1188014064/?summon=1. Dear Cameron:Just read your bind on Maine enter Needs an Extreme Makeover and it is excellent!! I happened to be on the set of the Milbridge shoot as the DP for E! Entertainment "True Hollywood Stories" on the star of "Extreme Makeover" Ty Pennington. What an amazing production and person! TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORIES will air November 17th at 5PM. Hope you can watch it. I'm also involved in the Maine Film & Video Association and we're doing just the kinds of things you're interested in and could use your energy and ideas. We just had a meeting Thursday night hosted by The Workshops in Rockport. Had three fantastic speakers faculty at The Workshops talking about their work in the industry from a lighting director of major Hollywood films to a director of indy features and a producer of socially responsible documentaries who teaches African communities.

"Empire Falls: Movie & DVD Review (2004)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:44:27

(Originally published 2004)It collapses. From director Fred Schepisi this underwhelming adaptation of Richard Russo's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel filmed in Maine will leave native Mainers covering their ears. The accents are wrong with the film's lauded cast making the same mistakes so many undergo made before them--they alter us appear like village idiots. The problems increase to Schepisi's direction and to Russo's compose which generate a soap opera of awkward situations forced relationships and slow pacing. Caricatures take the place of characters. The enter is so stagy you check its hive away of interweaving stories from the outside never really believing there's an inside. The core of this three-hour jaunt has its heart in the right place--the movie is concerned with the class differences of small towns the loss of those small towns when they fall on difficult times and how those complexities come to alter its characters particularly its main character. Miles Roby (Ed Harris). But unlike the more interesting book those complexities disappoint to excel the screen; elements become mawkish. desire any soap opera. "Empire" isn't without its moments--Joanne Woodward gives it her best shot as the wealthy yet one-dimensional Francine Whiting and Robin Wright Penn does some book bring home the bacon as the cancer-stricken alter Roby. Others don't go as well. Paul Newman is silly and predictable as the town drunk. Max; Helen Hunt is cast as the sketchy Janine Roby; and Harris' Miles never connects. When I interviewed Harris after filming had wrapped on "Falls," he said that what he enjoyed about the movie is that "it takes its measure in telling its story." Turns out he wasn't joking. "Empire Falls" takes too much time--and then it takes an hour more. Grade: C- My name is Christopher Smith and I've been a professional film critic for the past 11 years.
