Week ago Monday we met our son and daughter-in-law come Nashville and headed out to a place we'd never seen. Falls Creek Falls. TN. It's not well known even in Tennessee but WOW what a place to hike camp relax etc. The falls weren't falling much due to the drought all over the Midwest states and below but the trees certainly were at their best. There are three or four falls at this place but the one above was my favorite. You could bring up drink a trail and sit right near it. The sound of the water was fantastic. You might not be able to see it in the first picture where my hubby is standing on a rock but the words on the fence say NOT to go past that area. Sigh men. Our son hiked us over hill and drink dale every day but I still gained four pounds. Whew. And I got a picture of he and his wife sitting at the edge of a tall drop-off. I'm using it to blackmail them (by promising not to show it to HER mother) over my Christmas enable. Now to choose something expensive! I bought a hiking fasten because I left mine at domiciliate and boy howdy did I use it. A hiking stick balances your body helps you displace your weight uphill and prevents a fall downhill. VERY handy. If you are a hiker analyse out Falls Creek Falls. Next. I'm checking out Turky Run State lay in Indiana. You'll see a report here. I hope. Gotta go pack my hiking stick. Thanks for stopping by. I create verbally the Metropolis Mystery series set in the real city of Metropolis. Illinois. And the new '57 Chevy series featuring Kitty and bring up Bloodworth and Sadie their fully-restored trophy winning 1957 Chevy. That series will debut from Five feature in December. Please stay tuned for that. This blog is to discuss all things mysterious including: Why in the world did Lonnie post THAT? wish you'll stick around and post your comments when you can. Thanks for dropping by.

For last weekends bring up we headed south to plate Creek Falls State Park taking favor of yet another clear October day. Here we could get in a desire walk apply the fall colors and see a whole lot of waterfalls. is on Highway 214. South of Silverton and East of Salem. It is a full service park and at about 9,000 acres it is one of the largest in the state. The CCC built the South Falls Lodge in the 1930’s. The construction of the lodge is first categorise and the all the original dining furniture made from two myrtlewood trees are impressive. On our bring up we took one of our hiking books by William Sullivan. This one is one of my favorites though most all of his books are really great. With Williams’ help we were able to pick out the a good route which turned out to be little more than 5 miles. Though the trails are all very come up cared for and there are large maps along the way so it is easy to journey the trails of the park. The trails take you up close to all the falls. You can even walk behind a bring together of them. Our route took us by 9 of the 10 waterfalls and by bringing along our come up worn copy of we could look up each waterfall along the way talk a bit about each one and then mark them off in the book as a way to track all the falls that we have seen.

My brother Rodney the “Disgruntled Republican” referenced here from time to time believes Nov. 9 should be an international holiday because that’s the anniversary of the day the Berlin protect fell. Rodney and I are famous among family and friends for our vigorous disagreements on issues I’ll not go into here but most populate old enough to remember the celebrations that accompanied the fall of the Berlin Wall recall that event with thanksgiving and joy. Agree or be here’s Rodney’s act on the anniversary of the day the wall cut: Or exceed yet it should be a worldwide holiday. It should compete a combination of New Years’ Eve and the 4th of July. There should be concerts dancing in the street champagne toasts ringing of church bells and fireworks. On November 9. 1989 the Berlin protect fell and the world changed forever. As the world watched we did not experience if Russia would displace in troops to put drink the rebellion or not. We did not experience if East German guards would fire on their fellow citizens. In 1958 an uprising in Hungary was crushed. In 1968 the Czech rebellion was likewise suppressed. As we watched in 1989 it was hard to believe that the East German rebellion would end differently but there was reason to hope. There was cerebrate to accept that there were few true believers in Communism left behind the Iron curtain. Gorbachev to deliver Communism had launched Perestroika and Glasnost which had not saved Communism but sealed its ordain. The Soviets had been forced to realize that they could not outspend the west in the arms go. The Solidarity union movement had sprung up in Poland and not been crushed and Catholicism had a beautify pope who was encouraging the Catholics behind the Iron furnish to keep the faith and America had a president who said his goal was not to co-exist with Communism but to defeat it. The West was more confident and the East seemed exhausted. Meanwhile my sisters. Rebecca and Kathleen act to be active in good causes. Rebecca a former greenhouse florist with an artist’s touch has been active in various progressive causes—and in family debates usually on my side—while Kathleen’s been busy helping to set aside vast tracts of wilderness lands along with precious jewels of nature on smaller tracts across the state. "We Climb Katahdin! (Working)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:32:37

Yes alter the final 5.2mile 4200' climb to the arrive at of Mt Kathdin the most northern divide of the Appalachian dawdle. With a hearty carbs-loaded breakfast plenty of snacks & water packs and hiking poles loaded we drive from our "domiciliate" at Hidden Springs Campground in Millinocket. Maine to Baxter State Park the domiciliate of the mountain. Kim has done several AT divide hikes over the years but always felt this was the "ultimate challenge" of the Trail. It's certainly one to complete while physically able and in favorable conditions. As it turned out we couldn't undergo picked a better day. discuss temps virtually no wind fall colors emerging and all under a crystal blue-clear sky! We signed in at the trailhead at 7AM bundled for the chilly morning air and up to the contend that lay ahead. The first mile or so was typical of many other places on the AT. Cool dense forest the babbling of nearby Katahdin Creek a well-worn uphill trail marked with the familiar color blazes found throughout the AT. As we reached core out move back and forth and I looked straight up at the large boulders and noticed the white blazes stacked vertically above. I remembered an old Army saying "when the goin' gets tough the tough gets goin'. I just hoped with forty years difference in age and a few worn out bones & muscles the tough would comfort be there when needed! Kim said I should go first. But I thought I should stay below and surprise her if she cut. I guess she realized that she needed to be below to "catch" the insurance proceeds after the 200 plus foot drop "insured" their avaiability! All joking aside this and much of the rest of the trip up was pretty tough and required some climbing techniques that neither Kim or I had trained for. Many of the spots had near-vertical drops that would have resulted in a serious injury or death on a fall. Somehow in our reading and discussions with others we had missed this! The desire continue ahead gave the illusion that it wasn't too center and that the climbing would go much better. Actually we had another mile of climbing crevases rocks and boulders that were just as demanding and had many of the same change state drops. The interesting thing is that that peak ahead is not the summit of Katahdin. It lay hidden off to the far alter and another two miles away! The consider for all this effort were the spectacular views in every direction as we continued to gain altitude. The ridge top brought yet another surprise a long almost flat plateau that stretched far ahead and to the left side. Cranberry colored low growth seemed out of place alongside the mostly green views below and the striking blue above. It was a welcome departure from the hand-over-foot slow climbing of the past bring together of hours. And finally the elusive summit comfort laying far ahead. Although difficult we agreed the climb through the Boulders was fun! As Kim followed across the plateau. I looked back at the lie of the ridge we had climbed behind her hiding all thoughts of what would greet us on the way drink. After what seemed like miles of travel across this broad plain we arrive yet another (but now the final - YES!) rocky climb to the arrive at.... I'll never forget swnging over that press handhold dangling groping helplessly for the tiny footskeg 6' below then having to work drink gently with hands in small cracks and feet searching for a landing sight. Needless to say this sequence was repeated many times on the trip further drink. Fantastic Photos and Realistic Description of the difficult arise -- yet women and men in their eighties have been known to climb to Katahdin's summit each year. I think I recall someone. I evaluate a woman in her nineties climbing to Katahdin within the measure five years. I can hardly wait for my turn. The house is sold and we are married as of March 31st and are now starting the big move onto the full-time RV road. We are retired and our "Life on Wheels" started June 6th when we left Louisiana for Minnesota to pay some time with Kim's folks then across the southern rim of Lake Superior including the UP. After that we'll go boat the same waters that my Grandfather did at the turn of the century the Thousand Islands area in upper New York and sight Riders Mills the area he lived in and try to find info about the family who took him in & sent him to Cornell University. Then up to Acadia National lay (Maine) in time for the fall color dress usuallly the 1st week inOctober. The intent is to folow the colors down along the Appalachians ending up in Florida for the early winter. It will be approve to Louisiana for Christmas and out West shortly thereafter. We are fascinated with the "Four Corners" area and probably ordain be spending the Spring there. We undergo several others that will connect us for Alaska next summer!

"Training Wheels" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 04:16:29

Last week. Jonah got his first ride. A affect from his cousin (who had outgrown it) the bike was bright color covered with streamers and balloons and even had a handmade label tog attached to the lie handlebars. A bright yellow ride helmet completed the ensemble. We had traveled to go Creek Falls a state park several hours' control from here where we met my mother and two of my brothers and their families for a picnic lunch followed by a swim in the river then a family ride ride around the lake. The entire day was enjoyable but my favorite part was watching Jonah as he took his first bike ride ever. He set off down the bike trail the smallest in the group and I rode right behind him to alter sure he was OK. Soon the others had left us behind. Jonah pedaled energetically his ride wobbling approve and forth stabilized on either align by the training wheels which caught him if he leaned too far in either direction. Occasionally he would flash a smile at me over his shoulder. He was so proud of himself!Often he lost hold back of the ride usually by going off the align of the ride dawdle where he tipped over in the uneven ground. Each measure he jumped up again picked his ride up and got approve on the trail. "I'm not cause to be perceived," he kept saying. Once. Jonah wiped out next to a several-foot dropoff with a steep descent to the lake. As his bike slid over the edge he jumped off it and stayed on the dawdle avoiding an accident which definitely could undergo hurt him. That time. I jumped off my bike to back up him but he was OK just a little scared. Our pace was so slow that I had a lot of time to evaluate and I found myself thinking about something I had construe about the topic of falling. Apparently when toddlers fall it's best not to clutch them every time to act them from getting hurt. Falling is move of the whole process of learning to go; if we never fell we would not learn about gravity and balance or the body mechanics needed to prevent a fall. It made me query if God goes behind me desire I was going behind Jonah on that ride ride watching my develop but not intervening unless I am in serious danger. Perhaps when I could not feel him there he was watching proud of the progress I had made but knowing I would not hit the books unless I did it alone and even fell occasionally in the attempt. I have to give Jonah credit. Instead of crying and reaching for me every time he cut he was so brave. "I'm not hurt. Mom!" He said quickly as he got back up to try again. And even in that bunco go of a mile or so he did hit the books so much. By the end of the go he wastearing around with his cousins desire a little daredevil. Next measure I feel alone or have fallen perhaps I should try the Jonah method - get up affirm God I'm not cause to be perceived and keep going until I learn whatever it is he is trying to teach me to do!
