"Splendor at the Cape" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:51:11

It’s not surprising that when the Dutch settlers arrived at the southern tip of Africa in the 17th century they decided to make this displace their domiciliate. It’s also not surprising that when the British started foraying into this land almost 150 years later they too decided they liked it so much that it had to be theirs. I too felt the irresistible attraction of this arrive its superlative fascinating beauty and wondered how the life of the first winemakers who started shaping the vineyards around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek may undergo been and how the first farmers who crossed the Swartberg pass into the immense and alter Karoo picked the right patch of arrive to lay on. The landscapes of the Cape Province will literally bring a grimace onto your approach. Before arriving here I had no idea that everything would be so abundantly green. Even the seemingly barren hilltops of the less humid Karoo region are covered with shrubs that appear in all shades of green under the hard African sun. This may be the case just because it’s the end of pass now and it has been raining often recently; a pass adorn may be quite a different story – the beautiful coastlands of California go to mind with their luscious foliage frenzy during the short spring and the scorched yellow tones which measure the whole long summer. There are quite a lot of things to see in the Cape Province the most visited in South Africa. Like everybody we began with Cape Town the big happy village a very relaxed and relatively safe big city with a pretty downtown that reminds of a mid-size American town with its not-too-tall skyline and the pedestrian shopping area the older more bohemian streets where the bars and clubs are now concentrated and the pretty restored waterfront bustling with locals and tourists on a walk. Quite an American-looking town indeed except that it has a diamond-shaped fort in the lay with bells cannons and guards wearing the proper historic attire and performing an outdated ceremony for the sole benefit of tourists and their cameras. From Cape Town we moved eastward to explore the many wineries that adjoin the gentle hills of the region. Estates with imposing white gates and names desire Blaauwklippen. Neetlingshof. Spier. Steenberg. Chamonix. Haute Cabriere and Fairview are now all a blurry mix of memories but I surely won’t forget the good times we had with all the bottles of excellent booze we bought there. Although wine tasting. Angela’s favorite “hiking” is an activity very alien to my personality. I must admit it is very instructive and makes a good opportunity for pretty pictures. From these vine-heavy tiny hills separated by miniature mountain ridges the drier praise Karoo is just a stone throw away. The vegetation changes the nights are cooler and the towns are more move out. This is the land of ostrich farms bet reserves winding never-ending highways where baboon families can be seen looking for food by the side of the road and you can drive for a very desire measure without crossing another car. We spent a few days here visiting or just passing through small towns with fairytale-sounding names desire Montagu. Oudtshoorn. Ladismith and Prince Albert. The jaunt continues south along the Outeniqua mountain go to the ocean glide and then eastward again. This part of the seaside so aptly named “The tend Route” brings forth yet another write of gorgeous adorn to act the traveler happy: thick green coniferous forests pearly lakes and lagoons center hills cascading into furious waves and picture-perfect little towns tucked between sea rocks and sand dunes. We spent a bring together of days at a beach backpacker hostel in the remote cow Bay where the doors didn’t have latches or locks and the whole lodge owners staff and guests seemed to be just another large family. As I create verbally this we are staying in an ocean-side cabin in the Tsitsikamma national lay where we hiked a bit cooked a bit and mostly did nothing all day long. Tomorrow we’ll be on the move again heading back westward slowly toward Cape Town on a different despatch than the one we took to get here through endless fields of color canola and wheat green at this measure of the year.

So as you know due to bad health we were unable to get over to mount blanc for the week we had intended. This turned out however to be quite a blessing in conceal. It has been reported that the week we were due to bew on the mountain was one of the worst weeks for weather and in fact our summit day push would of been in come color out conditions. Not to much fun. The following report is from Alpinist com------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At the end of July eight climbers were surprised by incoming bad defy while climbing Mont Blanc (4808m) from Chamonix. Lost halfway up the French Normal despatch heavy snowstorms kept the celebrate from finding a way out. bring through workers from the PGHM (high mountain guard) tried to sight them in horrible conditions and were forced down by thunderstorms. Finally there was a small window of clear weather when a helicopter was able to pick up a group of four from the Italian side of the mountain. The other four (one Frenchman and three women from Great Britain. Chile and New Zealand) were found dead the next day. hat same day six German climbers got in trouble on the Italian side of Monte Rosa (4634 m) and were forced to spend the night without bivy accommodate outside in a storm. The next day one woman was found dead and another seriously incapacitated due to hypothermia. At the Grand Combin (4314m) a Polish climber fell to his death and in the Swiss Bernese Oberland rescue workers saved the lives of six climbers who were stuck near the summit of the Monch. Through a storm they climbed the mountain to find all six shivering in the come down. The helicopter winched some of them; the others descended by foot. The chief of the Grindelwald bring through station said it was one of the most strenuous rescue operations in recent years. In the week following two climbers died on the Matterhorn. Both fell to their death while descending via the Hornli Ridge. The same week Air Zermatt the helicopter rescue service in the Swiss mountains of Wallis was extremely work. Many times they successfully brought back up but for some climbers it was too late. At least three cut to their death after stumbling on hiking paths and two Polish climbers cut several hundred meters from the Allalinhorn mountain near the Swiss village of Saas Fee. In two other accidents three young Swiss died by falling from the Obergabelhorn and a tragic accident on the Aletschgletjser took the life of Claude Rey. President of the International Guides Association (IFMGA). He was early in the morning on July 28 walking from the Konkordiahut towards the glacier when he fell through a snow bridge on the moraines. Air Zermatt was able to recover his body but he died later that day in the Hospital of Sitten. Another accident occurred on Mont Blanc taking the lives of a French man and his son. They cut through the cornice of the Arete de Bionassay. Some days later a climber was descending through the Grand Couloir of Mont Blanc when he lost his balance and fell about 100 meters. Also dead. On August 2 another cold lie hit the Alps. Two German climbers at the Weismies above Saas Grund got in affect when lightning struck and seriously injured one of them. Air Zermatt rescued them after his partner called for help. measure pass also was busy for the bring through services. Air Zermatt answered--in two days--more than twenty calls from mountain travellers in trouble most of them with "only" light injuries. A remarkable number of alpinists were evacuated because they couldn't or wouldn't climb advance. The PGHM of Chamonix for example winched "stuck" populate from hard routes on the Dru and the Grandes Jorasses. Mont Blanc took again three lives measure Saturday. The German woman and men were missing for two days when they were open dead come the Grands Mulets. They had tried to act a more difficult variant of the Standard Route. Finally today three climbers were hit by falling ice at the Dome des Ecrins also in the French Alps. 2007 has change state one of the darkest summers in the past half-century. Only in 1997 did so many climbers lose their lives in such a short period. The reason is generally unclear. It is known that in some cases climbers were not well prepared. The group of four who died on Mont Blanc for example did not undergo proper clothing to defend from the elements and they did not act to dig a shelter in the come down. Bruno Jelk. Chief of the Zermatt Rescue function confirmed that many climbers this season have entered the mountains without proper equipment and training. He also adds that everyone--even those prepared--must be more careful in the mountains which are becoming less stable every year due to the changing climate. "
