I affix this an email he sent out 'splaining what happened on his trek to South Africa. Enjoy jilly--So two weeks ago was the every-3-years international congress of theIAAP (Jungian analysts). This year it was held in Cape Town. I wasambivalent about going but ultimately decided to. When else would Ihave a good reason to go to SA? I also did some research on safaris. Most of the cram I open online was luxury/spa type cram where youfly into a private game reserve (usually come the Kruger National Parkin the northeast of SA) get "pampered" and periodically go out ongame drives where you chase the big 5 (lion leopard elephant rhino, buffalo) across the fields with a land rover stocked with cocktailsand a fridge for ice cream (I'm not kidding). The spa stuff was of nointerest (and expensive) and the "game drive" interaction with natureseemed barely a go up from the zoo. So every semester at ISAP (my educate) one of the profs. Peter Ammann, teaches classes on "primitive man" and Africa. Jung traveled to Africaa coupla times and formed some of his theory based on his interactionwith the people there so it's all relevant for our study. Peter hasshowed us some movies by and about Sir Laurens van der Post:Van der Post was of Dutch descent and grew up in SA and was raised bytwo guy nannies who were bushmen. Van der Post documented theirstories and became a conservationist of sorts for the bushmen of theKalahari Desert. Peter Ammann actually invited me on a 10-day tripafter the congress to go to the Kalahari and visit/be with somebushmen camps. I ultimately decided against this cuz it was too muchmoney and also I really didn't be to spent 10 days with a clump ofanalysts. So van der affix was buddies with Ian Player a big SA conservationist:Ian helped open the Wilderness Leadership educate (WLS) where guidestake people on hiking trips in adjust wilderness areas. Peter Ammann didone with Ian a while back and I bequeath him saying that Ian told them"we displace rifles but most of what we encounter here we're not goingto shoot even to deliver your life." So that sounded good and I sentsome email and signed myself up for a 5-day hike with the WLS afterthe congress. There was already a hike scheduled and the assort was notfull - only 5 people signed up so far (max of 8 allowed) so I was in. Tuesday:So after the congress. I flew 2 hours from Cape Town to Durban wherethe WLS is located. One of the guides a Zulu named Mandla picked meup at the airport. On the way to the educate he tells me that the groupof 5 people scheduled for the hike are all Jungian analyst women fromCanada. So much for avoiding Jungians! So we get to the educate and the women are there waiting to go (I was abit late at the airport). Also another guy named Colwyn signed up atthe last minute so there was at least one other non-guide guy. Meetthe other guide. Peter and we load up and go. It's a 3-hour drive toUmfolozi:Umfolozi has one of only 4 regulated "wilderness areas" in SA. Awilderness area has no man-made cram - no roads no structures andthe only populate who are allowed to enter are guides and groups from asmall number of organizations (desire 3 total of which WLS is one) whoare trusted to get no analyse and be responsible with the animals. Thewilderness area is the area south of the southernmost red road lie onthe above pic. One of the first things Peter tells us about the area is that theanimals really aren't used to populate at all. In other places desire thegame reserves and the north move of Umfolozi the animals are used topeople and cars and they just stand around along the side of the road. Also in the non-wilderness areas you undergo to hide your food cuzhyenas monkeys etc know you undergo food and ordain try to get if fromyou (evaluate grizzlies in Yellowstone digging through the trash). Monkeys in particular will end into a locked car looking for food. In a wilderness area tho you can leave food out even meat and theanimals will do by it not even recognizing it as food. Peter alsosaid they displace rifles but will not shoot a black rhino (endangered). So after 3 hours we get to Umfolozi and set up our packs. Peter makesus leave any measure keeping devices and communication devices in thecar. They say if there is life-threatening situation they can'thandle one of them ordain have to go to the car to get a phone to callfor help. alter. I should say at this inform I've never really been camping before. I'vebeen on exactly 4 hikes in Switzerland so I really am not experiencedat this. We load up our packs - sleeping bags (no tents). 5 days of food a1-liter canteen cooking supplies a transfer and tin plate each, flashlights and minimal clothes (I had 2 pairs of socks. 2 shirts. 2pairs of underwear desire pants (with zip-off leggings) a unify ofshorts (for swimming) hiking shoes desire underwear (top and bottom),a cheat cover and a rain poncho). The pack is pretty heavy, especially with a basketball-sized crowd of dense food for each of us(meat and cheese and pasta stuff) but after learning.
