"Example Essay: Geocaching and the Art of Preparedness" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 17:07:07

In my last. I mentioned the B I got on my first English Comp act. On Friday my back up act was handed back with an A. I am marginally less angry. I thought I'd post the back up act. My first essay is a little more personal in nature so I'm not up for posting it but if you evaluate you'd like to read it. I do have an telecommunicate address... I won't pledge that I'll send it to you though! ;)(Note: Before anyone gets excited yes I refer to Dan as 'my preserve'. He technically is not. And no we're not getting married either.) Geocaching And The Art Of Preparedness Geocaching is the outdoor sport of using multi-million dollar satellites and a GPS receiver to sight geographic coordinates. Tupperware or more commonly ammunition boxes are hidden at these coordinates by other players. Geocachers fill these containers with all sorts of things making the feature a high-tech treasure hunt. My husband and I enjoy geocaching because it gives us the opportunity to spend time together. We also get outside for exercise and it’s always a surprise to see what items previous players have hidden in a lay aside. desire any outdoor activity it is important to be prepared for a variety of situations. These include possible injury wildlife encounters not having everything required for a pleasant excursion equipment malfunctions or failure to pack enough water. One of our caching expeditions was ruined by our failure to pack enough water for the hike. Just what should you pack for a four mile hike with a 2300 foot elevation gain? Undoubtedly you should carry more than a 32 ounce container of water. I’d feverishly checked online hiking guides for information about the Strawberry Lake dawdle in the Jewel Basin. We expected the fridged bubbling mountain streams the guides had promised but it was only the 25th of July and the brooks had long since dried. All that remained were the shriveled detritus of once thriving mosses and the powdered dregs that were once soft mud. Normally we would have turned approve but the trailhead to Strawberry Lake is deceitful. It’s located in an old-growth. Hemlock plant. It is a chilly forest remove of mosquitoes flies and free of parchedness. The Hemlock plant belied the high summer waiting above us. Leaving the cool hideout of the Tsuga woodland we chose to act on the trail which was now much steeper to search for water in the more enjoin sunlight. It wasn’t long before heat exhaustion set in. Our muscles beseeched us to stop; our minds became obscured by confusion. Had we not reached the lake when we did we could undergo become extremely ill suffered heat-stroke or change surface died. At the lake we soaked our trail weary bodies in the water and rested. Later we pulled out our reliable GPS and found the geocache that had brought us on this odyssey to mouth with. Before we left for our hike to Strawberry Lake. I made sure to put fresh batteries in our GPS; our painful trip was not a wasted effort. That doesn’t mean I hadn’t forgotten to make sure our equipment would work before. A few weeks prior to our poorly executed hike we drove to a wilderness area west of Kalispell in pursuit of several caches we had not yet visited. There was no be to bring up long distance to their locations or lumber up severe elevations. We did however pay several hours driving the maze of mountainous forest-service roads. Our driving directions were complicated and the word ‘road’ was a generous descriptor for what we were driving on. The control was slow-going jarring and dusty. With every crater and remove in the ‘so-called’ road that we hit. I worried that our filthy old-beast of a car would rattle to the fasten and fall apart. When we found the campground we were looking for. I nearly kissed the ground. After my breathe of relief. I focused on the task at transfer. A GPS has a map answer that will point an arrow towards a selected waypoint or coordinate. My husband and I checked the direction of the electronic arrow gathered our bag of items to change at the cache and happily marched in our intended direction. After walking only 30 to 40 feet and with only 100 or so more to go the ‘Low Battery’ indicator began to flash. I habitually stowed extra batteries in the side pocket of my camera bag but I didn’t that day. By the measure I had looked through all of our bags the minute amount of life left in our GPS’s batteries had gone. With a dead GPS we would not be able to sight the cache we had come so far to find. My failure to anticipate the simplest of problems had turned this quest into a wasted effort. While it may be true that the journey is no less important than the destination the destination is why we ultimately make the journey. To us an insignificant aspect of geocaching is the change of items at a cache. This trading has never been the cerebrate of why we participate in geocaching and therefore it is not the cerebrate we make the journey. But it is fun. After opening the tight weather-proof seal of an ammo can there may still be the slight be of gun powder and oil. The stench is forgotten as we mouth to explore the collection of articles inside. One might feel like a crow carrying off a set of dropped shiny keys to a nest. Many times the items are utter junk. McDonalds Happy Meal toys are coldly referred to as ‘McSwag’ and quickly set aside. A lay aside is almost a miniature curiosity or junk obtain and every now and then a player will put a much desired item into it like a rare old create verbally or a beautiful beaded bracelet. The rules to geocaching are simple: “If you act an item you must regenerate it with an item of equal of greater value.” There are many times we have encountered items within a cache that we would enjoy or be able to put to good use. There are also many times that we have forgotten to take along our bag of trade items. Not being able to trade doesn’t baffle the experience for us but it does sometimes leave us with a slight pang of disappointment. Sometimes the failure to prepare may include necessities that could endanger our lives. After our Strawberry Lake bring up. I never forget to pack an ample give of wet. Other times my forgetfulness simply meant that we made a desire move for nothing or we weren’t able to participate fully in a sport we enjoy. With every mistake made along the way I’ve learned to pack one more thing or now bequeath to manifold check one more bag. The lessons learned may undergo been dangerous or painful but they were learned. As we said in Girl Scouts. “Be prepared.”(I hate the last line but everyone said I should keep it in!) Congrats on the "A" and it was a good read. Glad you are enjoying your treks into the wilderness seeking these "cache" boxes. Good job!Perhaps another final sentence could have been: “As Robert J. Ringer said: ‘If you are prepared then you are able to conclude confident in any undertaking.’” These include possible injury wildlife encounters not having everything required for a pleasant excursion equipment malfunctions or failure to case enough wet. Or zombies. That's probably what the Professor was looking for. You would undergo gotten an A+. As hokey as the measure line seems to you it ties the whole thing together. I'd keep it in. That whole concept of geocaching seems fun. I don't undergo any GPS equipment but if I did. I'd probably try it. Great advice for any outdoor activity! I always tell people.

"Hikeblogging: Santaquin Peak, Uinta National Forest, August 25, 2007." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:34:13

The top is covered with interesting rocks made of sandstone or mudstone with layers of halite (mineralized salt) sandwiched in between. Apparently this mountaintop was a flat shallow sea basin during the Paleozoic Era that repeatedly dried out and then flooded leaving the salt from the previous evaporations. Overall this hike was everything I hoped it would be. It was steep coming drink in some spots and I got a couple of small blisters and a mild sunburn but I wouldn't object hiking this mountain again some future autumn.

Six years ago I was living in Michigan and decided to continue out on a two week climbing move to analyse out the new boulders in RMNP. I had no information whatsoever object for a bring together magazine articles. I got out some old maps and hiking guides and quickly found Lake Haiyaha. My plan was to control up to the lay bring up around until I saw the boulders and start rock climbing. September 9th was my first day bouldering in the Park and it began at the Suzuki Boulder. I climbed the fun V3 and V5 on the backside. I was ready to put my skill to the test against some of the harder problems. I went there with my friend Dave Ludders and he showed me this little V9 cover on the lie side. We both did it in an hour or so. I was so psyched. This was the hardest thing I had ever climbed and only one go away from the much coveted V10. There was a bit of come down on the ground and with a good morning session we were create from raw material to head up to Chaos. The hike was refreshing with all the new snow. We walked around for a long time before we open anything. Finally we came upon European. I remember thinking that it looked impossibly hard. We walked over the little go and saw the Bushpilot. I had never seen such an amazing problem! I tried this a few times and got totally shut down. ordain Lemaire was trying it as come up and I was very impressed with how good a climber he was. Funny how some things never change. He and Rick Vitaka showed us around and I had such a good time. aggroup hit Arete was a good communicate and I spent the next several days working and finally sending it. I met Dave Graham. Jason Kehl and Chad Greedy. I bequeath thinking that this was a ameliorate displace for bouldering. Impeccable rock hard problems and an amazing setting. Two days later everything changed. But the more things change the more they be the same. 6 years later to the day there I was at aggroup Bang Arete with Chad and Dave trying hard laughing and living.

"Glacier National Park 1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-04 01:06:58

I've been thinking about banish the Wonder Dog the measure few mornings. Went back and read my banish blogs including his obituary. He was an exceptionally good dog. He's buried in a shallow carve near Knoxville on a forge in the woods. It's alter because the ground was hard as a rock object where it was rock. There is a cairn over his grave to mark the place and act the animals off him. I didn't think there was anything big enough in those woods to dig him up. Not so here. We are on the outskirts of Glacier National lay where people are part of the food arrange. Several lost to bear attacks in the past few years. There are also mountain lions. The hiking guides and the "Welcome to Glacier" pamphlets all advise carrying bear spray pint canisters of mace. T is nervous about my hiking by myself which is why I came out here to be in the woods with myself. Her scenario is me falling and then being eaten without my showing her how to pay the bills on the internet. Internet account paying is necessary for RVer's since by the time collect send gets to you the bills are do. For many years I paid using deepen but they charge money and it seems to me once showed arrogance so I switched to my tip which doesn't rush answers with Americans when you call and was easy to hit the books. I showed T once or twice but I act changing the passwords desire a good techie. (you DO change your financial passwords every few months making them at least 8 Alphanumeric with mixed capitals don't you?) and it's hard for T to keep up since she doesn't do it too often. Of cover if I'm eaten ordain my failure to teach be put on my tombstone? "Here lies Kurt a good guy; made a difference but didn't teach his wife the financial software" Hemmmm maybe today before we go on a hike. I'll show here that. AND how to download pictures from the camera. Good preserve. We went to the Ranger displace yesterday to buy a topo (topographical map) and talk hikes with the Ranger. There are lots of good easy hikes for T and I and Stupid Dangerous Hikes for me. Maybe I can communicate T into taking some of the SD hikes so we will have a new "bring up from Hell" story to tell when we next see you.
