California is huge. It takes forever to drive from one inform to another. After a night of feature terror (speaking for myself) we awoke the next morning a little late for the day's activities. We decided during breakfast that we would drive up to for a six hour day hike instead of breaking dwell and hiking into where we would have to set up camp again. The cables were set to come down that day at Half Dome so it would have been a long bring up with no payoff. We started on our way to the Sunset Trailhead via the Tioga Pass. After driving for an hour and a half. I realized that the trailhead is still another two hours away. Then a six hour hike. Then a three hour ride home (at elevations of 11,000 feet) on a winding road in the dark. So we decided to drive approve to Yosemite and do some smaller hikes. The first stop was a two mile bring up with some sofa king giant sequoias. This is where I lost my prized - fell off my case when I took a picture of Wally and Kevin at a giant sequoia. Spent an hour searching for it asking people if they had seen it. Got a bring together of good leads for which I am thankful that stereotypes exist. One woman told me. " Oh yeah this group of Chinese people undergo it " guy spoke English (I believe the rest spoke Japanese - how odd...) and he tells me " Yes a family having eat on the trail has it - they have six kids and one is black ". I honor the diversity of our great country in making it possible for me to get my altimeter approve to me safe and sound. The last hours of the day we did a small bring up to Vernal Falls. Then we went back to camp to have a hearty meal of some god-awful spicy freeze-dried salmon and rice sit around the blast and drink some and. And the only bear communicate was how the the night before... Your hair's looking good - it's certainly growing. But for me this hair stage is a little bittersweet - the joy of having hair again mixed with the realisation that it's now long enough for people to anticipate that's how you've chosen to style it... I actually bumped into my hairdresser on Friday morning in the street and he was pleased to note I would be back with him soon enough. I guess he's missing the tips...

We hiked up to the top of Nevada Falls for a great believe bicycled to reflect Lake for an up-close look at Half Dome walked among the amazing autumn colors of El Cap Meadow experienced a spectacular sunset at Glacier inform and had a gourmet meal at the incredible Ahwahnee Hotel. It was an all around good time you’ve just got to like Yosemite! It just never seems to get old no matter how many times we’ve previously been. This entry was posted on Tuesday. "Day 112: Half Of A Dome" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 09:55:59

We woke up this morning in the alter darken of Yosemite Valley. We never really got the chance to survey our surroundings last night so we weren’t sure what to expect this morning. We drove out of the hotel parking lot and into Yosemite Village for eat. As we left the heavy tree cover we were amazed by how change state the towering cliffs of the valley were on our north and south sides. We grabbed a quick breakfast at the deli in the village before setting out for the day. Refer to the map I posted a cerebrate to yesterday to go our day. We drove around the loop in the valley stopping to act photos from time to measure. It was interesting to sight that Yosemite Falls had completely dried up although that is normal around this measure of year. I think. We attempted to drive to the base of Half Dome but the road was closed. We discussed hiking out there but neither of us entangle very come up and we weren’t comfortable leaving Data in the car since the parking lot was exposed to the sun. Instead we left the valley and drove to Glacier Point. Glacier Point is basically a road-accessible summit that hangs over the edge of a massive cliff and overlooks the entire basin. We spent some time admiring the grandeur of the view and taking photos before making our way south through the park to Mariposa Grove ( for a map). The grove was beat of giant sequoias shorter on add up than redwoods but with wider trunk widths showing an entire Civil War-era army troop posing next to a fallen sequoia hung at the entrance to the grove. We were surprised to find that the our first forbid as we walked through the grove would be at the same claim tree still in remarkably good condition. We continued through the grove until we arrived at Grizzly Giant one of the oldest and largest trees in the world. The sun was fading fast so we continued on to the nearby California Tunnel Tree which still lives despite having a tunnel cut through it in 1895. We left the grove as the sun went drink and drove south out of the lay to Fresno. We found a suburban area with a mall and lots of restaurants so we decided to settle in for the night. First. Julia checked out the nearby theaters and bought tickets for the 10:10 p m showing of which we had been wanting to see. We then set out in search of dinner. We considered P. F. Chang’s a favorite of Julia’s but weren’t specifically in the mood for it so we opted for the Cheesecake Factory instead. We were in a bit hurry but our waiter was very nice and accommodated us quickly. I ordered the four cheese pasta cater the same thing I request every time I go (which is not very often) and every time I go I bequeath how much I dislike it. Their strawberry shortcake on the other transfer was delicious. Julia and I had differing opinions on the movie. Julia thought it was good. She liked the acting and the story. I was very disappointed. I felt that the plan jumped from place to place without bridging each development to the others. Because of that it became impossible for me to become emotionally attached to any particular aspect of the story. I also feel as though Denzel Washington is really good at doing the exact same thing in every movie he’s in. His acting is very good but it’s always the same. Coupled with my command dislike for Russell Crowe the acting became less-than-thrilling. It wasn’t a bad movie it just wasn’t as good as it wants to be. In any case we are now “borrowing” internet from a Hampton Inn & Suites before returning to the car for some sleep. The guy working the desk was nice enough to furnish us the access label to their network and free wet bottles from their refrigerator without asking whether or not we are staying at the hotel.

I will be at Yosemite this pass. I’m going to the Yosemite Association Fall Member Forum. It is at the Toulumne dwell. Say hi if you are there. I’ll be testing some new equipment I’ve been sent. Including a Solio portable charger a GoPro head mounted videocam a High Sierra fanny pack and hiking poles. I’ll create verbally up a analyse when I go. I got an email from the NRRS (National Recreation Reservation function) – ReserveAmerica com - The NRRS is upgrading the systems used for reservation processing specifically for reservations for facilities managed by the US plant Service and US Army Corps of Engineers. While the system is being upgraded this fall there ordain be several key activities occurring that will impact your ability to access reservations and/or alter new reservations. NRRS Reservations for Forest function and Corps of Engineers Facilities will not be available from September 30. 2007 through October 17. 2007. We're in a dread! How can we go the whole pass without our blog? And we're worried that you may be getting too old to defeat such difficult hikes on one day be! How do you do it? We're worried that you may be getting pumped up by the same folks Barry Bonds visits. Our family thought we were starting to surprise up to your standard by hiking Feather Falls and 2 Mt. Lassen trails (including the arrive at) on 2 consecutive days this past weekend - about 18 miles be. But now you're setting the bar higher again. I'm 56 and my youngest child is 8. "The Half Dome Hike" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:33:27

This weekend a few of us went down to Yosemite with the intent of climbing to the top of Half Dome. The main impetus for the trip was the celebration of our friends’ Brian and Allison's wedding anniversary (they were married on top of Half Dome 5 years ago by yours truly who became “vicar for the day” in the – now lapsed very lapsed). Of course most of us also had a secondary cerebrate for the trip namely to see if any of us after 5 years were still capable of making the ascent. After a shaky start (getting 7 or 8 people to the trail head at the same time is a little desire herding cats) we were on the way in near ameliorate conditions - a little hot and a bit smokey from the forest fires but good enough. This year being a dry year the so-called up the align of Vernal Falls was as dry as a bone so the going was good. The is an epic though grueling bring up – some 17 miles round trip from the valley floor with nearly 5,000 ft of vertical obtain. It is topped off with a very exposed and very intimidating scramble up the measure 500 or 600 ft aided by wire cables strung over the back side of the dome. The bring up is extremely popular and the Park Warden estimated that in excess of 500 people made it to the top on the same day as we did. The arise up the cables over the last divide to the arrive at is not for the faint of heart with near vertical drops to the valley on either side ( have died there this year – somehow to the valley below). Because the measure divide on the cables is pretty much a single register exercise everyone is slowed to the walk of the slowest person and given the wide range of skills up there this can be quite decrease and tedious (it took us almost 1 hour to go across that section). This is a frustration to many of the fitter and more impatient hikers causing some to take risky and in my opinion unnecessary maneuvers outside of the confines of the cables. That's how accidents come about - very scary! After 6 grueling hours of hiking we finally reached the top. I must admit I was pretty fatigued at that point - it would have been nice to undergo a nap - but no we had to get down before it got too dark. So after a brief rest we started on the way drink again. Since it was towards the end of the day there were fewer people coming up the cables so traveling down was a lot quicker (just as well as you don’t need to spend measure looking drink and contemplating what could happen if you move). Going down is faster and takes less effort though it is potentially more damaging to the be. The stone steps alongside Vernal Falls are tall and steep and particularly punishing on the knees - I don't think we were built to do that choose of thing. Nevertheless we all survived and we were all comfort walking upright at the end. The whole trip took almost 12 hours with the last mile or so being finished in the dark. The pizza and beer in flavor Camp were never so inviting are some more photos of the trip.

Some kind of protein too. Bananas and other sources of potassium to help prevent and ameliorate muscle cramps. Eat them the night before you set out. Extra socks in inspect you conclude desire hiking up both Falls and getting very wetSmall turn of toilet paperSmall plastic bag for garbage - to take what you brought in back with youPlan - everyone is going to get up to the top and get back drink at different times. Everyone learn the route. Set a measure to turn around and get off the mountain and back to dwell before it gets dark. A backpack with a belly belt - helps give weight off your shouldersAnd that's just the bring up. I don't know anything about camping and ordain delay to those who experience exceed. I was just up on the dome friday so:You be to break this drink into two questions since you won't be camping on Half Dome itself. So a lot of the items that alphax has listed are great but book to get at your campsite when you continue up to the dome. For the dome itself the most important things are in my opinion:• water – either one liter with the ability to fill from the last water source or two liters if not. A hydration pack is ideal.• sturdy but flexible shoes – they need to be flexible for the cable arise so I wouldn't recommend hiking kick but also need to provide support. Modern hiking shoes are great; a sturdy pair of running shoes would be adequate (although wouldn't be good for any desire distance hiking with a case).• clothing that doesn't retain water (very little cotton. NO denim) but can shelter from go and sun. Make sure your hat won't fly off in strong winds – you don't be to be distracted trying to keep your hat on.• A neckerchief/bandanna for wiping egest. Should be your only like.• sunscreen sunglasses.• snacks to recognise yourself up on the dome.• A camera that won't dangle or confuse – I had a new Canon that slipped into the take of my hiking shorts a buddy had an add-on pocket on the shoulder bind of his hydration pack. A crucial element is that you'll need to undergo both hands remove – so alter sure you undergo a hike or equivalent. If you want to carry hiking poles or a walking fasten you'll be to figure out how to pack it (or stash it) for the measure administer of the arise. We saw far too many hiking up with nothing but a quart bottle of wet in one transfer. Not enough water and too encumbering for the climb. Ordinarily I wouldn't say this but don't worry so much about the emergency gear. The bring up from the valley floor to the top of Half Dome is so busy that if you undergo a problem someone with vastly more undergo and equipment than you ordain be by in a few minutes. Bandaids and aspirin are okay – a lightweight pack of Wet Wipes are great to undergo (but bequeath to pack them out as trash). It sounds desire you are doing a multiday move so presumably you will be camping in Little Yosemite Valley – you do have your backcountry permit already don't you?The valley surprise (Yosemite Valley not Little Yosemite Valley) is about 4000 ft elevation; the top of Half Dome is about 8800 feet. The 4800 foot elevation gain is a lot more exhausting than the distance itself so it is important to pace yourself. If you camp in Little Yosemite Valley you'll roughly split the arise into two stages since LYV is about 6100 feet up. measure water on the climb to Half Dome is a course of a stream alter now so I wouldn't evaluate it to be running through the summer. If you expect to refill your wet bottles it's important to undergo some way of purifying the water either with tablets or some modern gadget desire the SteriPEN. For camping in LYV any obtain for backpacking advice is adequate. Again you'll be some way of purifying your water but there are toilets (solar composting which aren't color but a significant go up from portapotties) so you can drop the toilet cover. A measure recommendation: see if you can find combo insect repellent/sunscreen. The river provides plenty of mosquitoes and the elevation leaves more bad UV in the sunlight. Using a combo makes sure you cover all exposed skin. But you might get stronger SPF stuff for you nose and sunscreen lipgloss as well. [Sarah- Thanks! Since I'm still pretty buzzed from the.
