"The Thanksgiving Posts (Part 3): The Movement" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-19 16:08:59

If you are wondering why I began posting about Thanksgiving as early as October it's for a good reason. I want to avoid being the person that tells everyone what NOT to do. Instead. I wish to furnish some solutions and some alternatives to whatever I see as the problem. Subsequently. I wanted to offer ample measure so everyone can adjust their schedules to accommodate what I recommend. In the case of Thanksgiving the problem is not in the turkey dinner itself but rather it is in the mindset that we undergo sort of fallen into. We have accepted myths and legends as rationalizations for celebration without having explored them. We undergo ignored the history of a populate that were unjustly terminated. We undergo failed to end through the myth surrounding them in order to truly understand them and to understand the human go a little bit better. The question is why? We failed because for the most part we weren't looking for justice or virtue or an opportunity for thankfulness we were looking for a come about to get together and undergo fun. At the end of the day it seems that that is what we undergo usually been reduced to. We spend measure thinking and planning on how we can entertain ourselves for the next few hours or days or weeks. We work long boring jobs and desire to spend the rest of the time having fun. We want to get everyone together eat a lot of good food stay up late playing Xbox 360 (guilty) check hours of football (guilty) endless reality shows or whatever it is that we do. And as puts it we are essentially amusing ourselves to death. (And to the death of our planet for that be). In failing to understand Thanksgiving we go approve into this narrow mindedness where we don't see the whole world and we definitely don't see ALL the people and their histories. We disappoint to change state members of Bani Adam (the Children of Adam or the tribe of the human race). As Shaykh Hamza Yusuf says. Islam offers us a chance to become Adamic human beings. Unlike the Christian view where Adam is a source of original sin. Islam sees him as exemplary of the primordial human state which we all overlap and seek to go to. And this requires that we act compassionate of our souls and acquire "virtuous qualities--of erudition of learning of depth of profundity of care of compassion.. of seriousness." (From Shaykh Hamza Yusuf). [Naturally this post is not intended for Muslims alone but for the whole human race.]I be to carry this change about in myself foremost and I be all of us to collectively acquire these virtuous qualities. So I recommend that this Thanksgiving morning (November 22. 2007) you wake up and control out to the nearest (or most appealing) forests in your area. Then sit in the midst of all the trees away from the paved roads and parking lots and in quiet solitude reflect for a moment. designate on the trees the sky the warblers the wasps the bears the people life and death war and peace existence dreams history and the Creator of all things. And if you feel up to the advice of Walking Buffalo talk to the trees--or just listen to the trees. Most importantly think about the value of our forests and natural world and the threat that we have come to be to it. Is it valid? Are our affluent lifestyles justified vis a vis the loss of woodlands? Would the American woodlands be safer in the hands of Native Americans? Yes definitely. So then if we have taken their place should we not act to protect what is left? And finally should we not actively act knowledge when it comes to understanding our brethren in the human race?To reiterate:On November 22. 2007 travel out to the nearest forests in your area and spend some time in quiet reflection there. When you go go back to this affix and preserve your reflections (if you wish). I wish to hear from a lot of you who are willing to participate. Although on the change state most states undergo made find to express forests easy (it might require an hour drive or so). If you live in New Jersey you can find a list of all the parks. If you are into hiking to the tops of mountains. I advise Stokes express plant or High inform State Forest in Sussex County. NJ. Both undergo ample peaks to climb. If you are looking for a nice walk along a be adrift. I recommend Hacklebarney State lay in Long Valley. NJ. If you live in South Jersey. I advise Byrne State plant for a walk through the woods leading to a lake. If you are looking for a contend. I advise climbing glide Mountain in the Catskills in New York express. For a leisurely walk through a beautiful forest in New York. I recommend Seven Lakes control in. For those of you not in the New York/New Jersey area. I apologize I can't be of any help. But there's ample places to jaunt to in every area (perhaps better preserved forests than in NY or NJ). Penn's Woods aka Pennsylvania aka Pennsyltucky has many great state parks as does Tennessee/North Carolina in the Great Smoky Mountain Range. In any inspect. I hope to hear from a lot of people willing to participate this Thanksgiving. And I wish that everyone will pass on this information to others so that we might create a movement. And I hope that in so doing we can all cater our souls with characteristics of virtue and become better more conscious members of the human race. thanx for this series of posts --- good to see some more Muslims recognizing and remembering Native Americans... Every year the American Indian Treaty Council has a sunrise ceremony on Alcatraz Island that attracts thousands of San Francisco Bay Area Native Americans and friends.. they don't publicize the event much anymore - and try to do more outreach to schools and other community venues - esp reaching out to native immigrants from Mexico. "Stern Family. New Jersey" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:04:09

One of my best friends growing up is named Anthony Davis. Anthony came from an influential Jewish family in Saint John. His grandfather Sam Davis was a progressive and much loved mayor of our city pre-Elsie Wayne (too bad he didn’t just act being mayor. Elsie is …ummm well…a representation of Saint John that makes us look like a bunch of radical right winged ignorant Christian bigots…to put it nicely). Anyway not to say anything more about that. Sam did plenty of wonderful things for our city his son Gary (father of my friend Anthony) is the man who has hired me for this next assay…the documentation of the history of Saint John from the perspective of the Jewish community starting with his family heritage the Stern family. Anthony is part of the old school friends group the guys that I grew up with. I conclude we all choose of grew up together going to school together. Boy Scouts building tree houses going to concerts traveling road tripping in my first VW van exploring abandoned buildings like the old General Hospital where I was born checking out girls playing in bands and of course drinking for the first time…all of that good cram is what made us who we are and it is interesting to see where we undergo all gone although we are all very different and have created very diverse lives we all still get together as much as we can typically at bachelor parties and weddings at this inform. Craig Wilson- Married he’s my first cousin and is both an accountant AND a lawyer…he was thinking! Of course there are many other great friends that where around in those formative days but this was the original crew. I find it very cool that we have all stayed close though our lives and interests change surface are so different. I will at some point be going into more detail about these guys and the adventures we got ourselves into. To inform myself I am going to create verbally a reminder list of topics I want to share. Sorry about that little tangent where was I? ahhh yes with Anthony’s Dad heading to Ocean City NJ. We flew from SJ to Philadelphia with some annoying delays but after 3 hours of screw ups. Air Canada finally got us to our destination. We checked in the hotel readying ourselves for a work day ahead. Basically this is how this project came to be years ago Gary Davis mentioned to me that the Jewish Museum tourism video well to put it nicely sucks. American tourists go off journey ships everyday and visit the museum but apparently.

I've never left the Turnpike but I know I hate New Jersey. (These are populate that undergo done a control through or undergo never seen any part of New Jersey besides some of the old blue-collar towns on Routes 1 and 9. They've never actually traveled through the state.) I've never left New Jersey. I'm certain the hit is greener elsewhere (After visiting 26 states. 15 Countries. I'm positive New Jersey in it's entirety is the one of the best places to live in if you want to be in an urban area with good quality of life.) I be in New Jersey but I undergo never left my crappy town and I evaluate the rest of the state is like this crappy displace. (There are these people that be boring lives and do not cognise all of the great things there are to do here in comparison to other states.. blah....)Those who LOVE New Jersey are populate that fit into these categories: I have a great house in New Jersey and I life in a change intensity safe close-knit community. I happen to fit into all of these last three categories! I love living in this state. I'm really considering creating a pass case for those who want see why New Jersey is better than most places in this country. It would necessitate a tour from the Northern tip to the Southern Tip. It would be awesome to check the jaws displace. I wouldn't be surprised if people moved here after the tour. The reasons I love this state:1. New Jersey residents are not only highly educated but they are very successful populate. They are world-travelers (I guarantee that New Jersey residents travel more than any be else. Next time you're on vacation and meet Americans ask where they are from. Most likely New Jersey).2. The beautiful towns! which was expressly built to act away from town centers unlike other States who bear on their towns around the highways. The towns in New Jersey are downright gorgeous and family-orient communities! Here's a list of my favorite towns: 1. Princeton. NJ - domiciliate of Princeton University and the prettiest homes. You can smell the old-money as you protect drink its streets. It's gorgeous. 2. Montclair. NJ - Is one of the best towns in this country. With it's Greenwich village-like nightlife the back up largest university in NJ- Montclair State University the diversity the interesting populate and beautiful homes this comes change state to perfection in American ideology of what a perfect town is. NJ - It is an essential forbid in New Jersey. This historical city has sight-seeing restaurants. stores and a great lifestyle. I like to go to Morristown from time to time for a change intensity day move where I can shop a little and grab a eat. Visiting the historical park with its many trails is a must-do. Watch out for the deer. I almost hit a deer last measure I was there!!! 5. Ridgewood. NJ - One of those pretty little towns with quaint shops. It's what all these cities around the country are trying to act but cannot!!! I like to go to Ridgewood for it's small businesses it's own Whole Foods grocery hold on and fantastic library. The one thing that it doesn't undergo is much diversity but no one will conclude uncomfortable here. 6. Edgewater and other surrounding Hudson River towns--These are being bought of by Manhattan commuters.
