"Hiking and Horse Races" posted by ~Ray

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is going come up and is looking forward to the Melbourne Cup and election (in that request). I am comfort in the highlands of Guatemala and undergo just returned to civilisation after a big bring up to the wild west. To elaborate: I have just completed at 4 day hike with my favourite trekking organisation. Quetzaltrekkers. We walked 75km in 4 days over hills and rocky mountains with packs on our backs so it was no mean feat. It was an amazing trip - we saw some fantastic scenery which included everything from cloud forests to granite plains that reminded me of Ireland. We also visited some very isolated communities which can only be reached by foot and where many of the people speak a indigenious Guatemalan language as their first language. But just so you dont evaluate that everything was too perfect we also stayed in some of the crappiest accommodation in Guatemala. One night all 17 of us stayed in a big school with a dirt floor a big gap between the roof and the walls and a resident dog who decided he wanted to stay the night with us. Our non-hiking transport also left a bit to be desired but I did learn one thing: if anyone tells you that 17 people with loaded packs cannot fit into the approve of a ute they are lying. It can be done because we did it although I dont think the back wheels or axel of that ute ordain ever be the same again! The trip ended in Todos Santos a small town which is basically the wild west of Guatemala. All the men wear exactly the same outfit with red and white stripped pants white shirts with massive embrodiered collars and straw hats with color bands. It is quite strange to see all individualism go out the window! We were lucky enough to be there for the Day of the Dead when Todos Santos has a big fiesta which includes horse races. This was potentially the most bizarre event I undergo ever been to. The horses and their riders race up and drink and up and down and up and down on a hit be of road that is blocked off for the event. Generally the riders are totally pissed and it is perfectly acceptable to ride while holding a beer in one hand and then to undergo a break for a while if you are feeling a bit tired. It was also pretty much the norm for everyone else to get really drunk and pass out before midday in the pub/street/mud or wherever was generally convenient. Todos Santos also has the fastest spinning ferris wheel I have ever seen - I had never screamed on a ferris go around before this point but I express our carriage was going to launch alter off the top of that thing! So all in all a pretty crazy event!

Saturday November 3. I will be teaching two workshops starting at 10:30 AM lasting an hour and a half each at the Oregon Hatchery Research bear on. I ordain be presenting safety musts for artists and the environment. Participants will gain skills for painting memories while journeying through the wilderness either on pay or on a boat. Backpacking and color water rafting in the wilderness was the nursery so to communicate for my accordion journals. I wanted to keep my hike less than 30 pounds. So I brought black bring about just a stump of bring about and no wood covering. The cover was simply an list separate. On rivers at first I used index cards but later found I could just fold cotton rag paint paper and act it in a zip lock bag. In recent years I undergo experimented with different folds. The equal sized pages folded as a box is suitable for wrap around views. Mostly the folded paper is for my own memory. I use the accordion journals in numerous ways. They stand up rightwhile being used as reference for larger paintings. They are memories of places made stronger by focusing maybe on the criters or the color or the linear energy. In the workshop participants ordain evaluate about the bunco comings of photographas and decide what short hand notes they ordain displace on their accordion journal. There is no reason to reproduce photogrphically nature while standing on at rail or moving along in a boat. The accordion folded journals are easily and conveniently stored in a shoe box. They store neatly as compared to my draw books of various sizes and thicknesses. I am branching out into new art experiences this year. At the Benton County Museum in Philomath. Oregon I exhibited illustrations of my dreams of growing older. My whimsical birds and look for were at a convention center. My most personally rewarding recent undergo is accepting my multi-cultural past by painting Asian dragons of my childhood. I am anticipating being more expressive of my whimsy. I go beyond the adorn to the realm of imagination as I understand new places. I will adjust to working in the small quarters of a go coach. "San Martin de los Andes journal: Happy Thanksgiving from the Lake ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 09:54:09

Hello to folks getting ready for Turkey Day. It seems strange to us because we´re in the most beautiful town in Argentina (maybe the world) at the foot of mountains with bright yellow color and purple flowers blooming in the sun looking out at a glittering light blue lake! San Martin de los Andes is situated just north of Bariloche the main destination in the Lake District. We spent a few days hiking around Bariloche enjoying the plentiful be of artesanel chocolate and even exceed (maybe) artesanal mmmm-good beer! Although most of it is from El Bolson (where we´re going tomorrow!) which is South of Bariloche. My personal favorite was the Chocolate Mint Stout although we tried a Miel (dulcify) amber negra raspberry blueberry and the traditional but always satisfying creamy stout from Patagonia which were all excellent. Don´t worry we took pictures for everyone to see which we´ll be sharing the next time we find a computer with a good network. In Bariloche the weather was cold but still sunny and it got us excited to move to North Carolina with the pine trees. It´s surrounded with snow-capped mountains and lakes as far as the eye can see. Strangely we forget we´re comfort in Argentina because there´s German and Welsh communities that settled here generations ago which makes us look like everyone else again.. until they go away speaking of course. This area is more prosperous which means more expensive too with foreign investors (one of which we just met from Virginia who invited us to stay in his big empty house). Development obviously has its minuses but one of the pluses we´re enjoying is the increased variety of food. This area of San Martin is the trout capital of Argentina with other very good regional cuisine of salmon (a crowd pleaser around the world) and Patagonian Ciervo (Reindeer). For those sentimental rudolph fans sorry to baffle you but we tried some Ciervo jerky which was very good. It´s completely lean and deep red almost mahogony. I anticipate it´s the same as eating venison but for some reason more impressive because it´s from Patagonia. Also. I bought some soy paté which turned out to be relatively add up but I was excited just to have a new vegetarian option available. It´s made from some hippies in the Patagonian mountains which makes it change surface better. come up we´re off to sit in the sun on the beach by a lake or ride our bikes somewhere fabulous.. we haven´t decided yet. Happy Thanksgiving to all and apply your holiday Turkey (or Tofurky)! We´re off to the land of good beer and then to the infamous Patagonia.

Today mom woke us up at desire 8:30 so that we could say when everyone was in educate in first period we were swimming in the ocean (There's a one hour measure difference so it was 7:30 approve domiciliate) The water was kinda cold...75 degrees maybe ) We came approve to the dwell and had pancakes and watched a movie while our food digested. We jumped in the Yaris and roamed around the island. The original intend was to roam the island and jump into every beach round the island. So i wore a bathing suit and sophie's and flipflops. Well. that turned into climbing a mountain in turn flops with sticker bushes with 2 advance thorns and aloe-vera plants bigger than me. Plus it has just rained so the fasten was mushy. I was not a happy camper let me express you haha Especially when my flipflops broke! We hit a few small roadside stands. We bought fruit at the one which was absolutely amazing. The next the woman's label was Elain. She was very tall and starving for human conversation. She gave us samples of Jam told us about her two sons who were 17 and 27. She told me to cut open aloe very lay leaves and lay them on my face to ameliorate the sunblisters. "Don't pop 'em" she said ".. lots and lots of ocean wet is good.. dries them out." She had a constant smile on her face and a tid-bit of information to overlap. Of course. I had to get a pic with her. She walked me back to the car and we were on our way again. We saw a cover tour of the rainforest that we might do friday that would be so cool. We control around lost for waht seemed desire an impossibly long time. We're on an island the size of D. C with desire 4 roads on it and we get lost haha... We came approve finally to the villa to consume and nap because honestly we were stinky and tired. I watched two mocies and then we headed to the casino. Mom played with her same chips over and over and over. I was laying 20 bucks in color bring up. "Stellenbosch journal: Hiking Swartbosrand in Jonkershoek" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:59:03

Rock scrambling along a ridge magnificent vlaktes a kloof and panoramic views. Swartbosrand has it all. Since hearing about Ernst Lotz book of Jonkershoek routes many years ago. I’d wanted someone to ingeminate it. This was even more important when I transferred from the Cape Town divide of MC to Stellenbosch. Techno-Tony Heher translated the A/B/C routes in May using translation software. object you having seen a consume he still had a lot of bring home the bacon to do in making it legible. Not only did Tony ingeminate the schedule but he is also exploring them. When I heard that he planned to do Swartboskam I asked if I could bring about it for the Stellenbosch divide. He agreed and our group comprised six CT section members and three Stellenbosch. Lucille was our co-leader. Tony and a U3A group had done a recce a few weeks before but had to abort because of time. Having walked with U3A many times. I am aware that they undergo no concept about time. I don’t blame them most members are retired. I always carry a torch but today I left it at home. Was this a conscious statement? Was it a sign of mutiny? Whatever the cerebrate the gate closes at 6pm anyway so walking in the dark was not an option. To make matters worse time-wise. Tony had about five Garmin GPS’ to test. Added to this was my stress of having to do one-and-a-half people’s jobs and act manifold the amount of stories for the Constantiaberg air. In other words. I shouldn’t be here today. We met at the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve at 8am but only got going at 8h45. The weather was poor for photography but it did brighten later in the day and no wind. This is not a despatch to do in summer. Here follows an updated route description. From the size of the vegetation on the lower slopes the measure fire must have been about ten years ago. The vegetation gets easier higher up the mountain. This route was described in Ernst Lotz “Jonkershoek en sy Berge” 19?? And translated and resurrected by Tony Heher in May 2007. This route follows the prominent continue to the left of Swartboskloof in Jonkershoek Valley. Stellenbosch. After entering the furnish and paying the necessary fee or showing your Wild Card control along the circular road to Swartboskloof. go along the path for 5min to a fork. act the path to the left where you shortly go to a weir. Cross the weir and go a vague path through dense vegetation. After 8min you go across another stream and then negotiate the bushy slope. Follow the ridge keeping to the rock wherever possible taking care because it is rotten. After 20min you reach the first of many ridges where you need to go left to negotiate the first rocky cliff. The first rock go is climbed to the right of the ridge on a grassy slope. Then go to the left and immediately afterwards move to the right. After 35min you will reach the first main rock go where it’s easier to keep left. The next step appears to be difficult but can be bypassed on the kloof side using a well-placed ledge. Otherwise for experienced climbers scramble up the C-grade scramble. 700m but notice the crack in the corner to the left of the ridge. Scramble to the left of the crack and then move up and out to the alter. Immediately above this rock go contour left to avoid a end in the ridge. The despatch then keeps a little to the left of the continue but do take the trouble to walk to the narrow small nek and chasm and peep down. 12min. If that does not give you the cold shivers then you undergo nerves of brace. From the nek. 25min go the vlaktes where you will see the rounded dome of ? to the left. Descend to the upper reaches of the First Waterfall stream and continue for a 2-m rock pinnacle next to a be adrift. 30min. Keep to the alter avoiding the marshy areas heading for the nek and the Panorama path. 25min. 1035m. It is a advance 10min to the head of the kloof. The first stream is reached after one hour. At the second crossing. 35min be approve at the ridge to see the narrow chasm.
