I haven't written in here in a long measure. I sort of told myself I'd go away again. Weekend. In the Cotswolds. An escape from London. It rained. But when wrapped up in waterproofs my hiking boots that make me feel desire an all terrain vehicle and my hiking pants that let me go through mud and undergrowth without a compassionate for stains or tears it doesn't matter. The come down above was actually the least of our worries. The sodden fasten underfoot was a far more pressing danger. Squlech conquer. All would have been uneventful had I not decided that an alternative route to avoid the road and continue with our far from humanity our only company is sheep and cows conclude was a good idea. It was a good idea the route perhaps was not. A more sensible person would have realised that the Cotswolds = recent flooding = sodden ground and swollen streams and does not = it being a good idea to detour along a route in a valley by a be adrift. Knee deep in with my fantastically waterproof boots finally breached the penny dropped. We saw cows herding. Did you know they could move so abstain? I didn't. They run at a throw flesh undulating kicking up clods. Stopping is primitive. Heels dig in the cow skids. I observed this in change state up when one charged towards me as I stood with my back to the wet. It finally halted not five meters away. Or did you know how curious calves are? Having being stalked by several. I have a new appreciation for their inquisitiveness. I couldn't undergo asked for exceed company. Even if he did leave me to map read. "Indian Jill Flys Back in Time - Lake Titicaca, Peru" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:52:46

I have just traveled approve in measure 300 years and it all feels surreal. What an adventure I am having. We chose Lake Titicaca only because it is the highest inland lake in the world and we thought more time at altitude would help us on our hike. Lake Titicaca is so amazing it warrants a move all of our own. I had no idea how fabulous it would be. We stayed on the island if Amontoni about as barren an island as you can get. We were all a little nervous about meeting our domiciliate families. It was a 4 hour boat go to get to our island on Lake Titicaca. Our boat was a 36 pay contract boat with an upper level viewing platform as come up as lower level seating and seating inside the confine. Lake Titicaca is surrounded by mountains and the first few miles of the lake is covered in large reeds. More on the reeds later. We arrived at Amantoni about 4:00 p m. docked and hiked up a center forge to where our Mamas were waiting. About a dozen ladies waited for us and our guide called out the 6 Mamas that would be required. We had been practicing our Spanish all afternoon so that we could greet our Mamas and introduce ourselves. We were all very nervous and very hesitant. As they called out our Mamas name a very shy women of about 24 years old stepped forward and we made very poor attempts at an introduction in Spanish. As she lead us up a huge hill to her house I was praying that guinea pigs would not be greeting us at the door. My prayers were answered only a preserve. 2 young daughters and a grandmother. Mama Isabelle showed us to our room and we had a few minutes to settle in. Our room was actually very nice small and clean with a little table for 2. We did not have much measure to unpack before we were bring about off for more climbing on an even higher path to the soccer pitch. A few of the men on our journey played against the local players and got very badly beaten. Then back drink the steep path to our accommodations. The Mama came and got us for dinner where we were shown into a little seating area of the kitchen. It was very dark by this time they have only candlelight a wood stove a small propane burner and we could barely see. I certainly undergo no idea how Mama Isabelle could create from raw material in the darkness. We were treated desire royalty and had a dinner of potato dope and a main dish consisting of rice potatoes and a few vegetables in a creamy sauce. It was delicious but I could not help but think how grateful I was that I had all of my shots before this trip. After dinner we went back to our room to get create from raw material for the evening festivities. At about this time Al was struck with that famous South American affliction and had to go to bed. Mama Isabelle dressed me up in her clothes. So this is the picture; two layers of petticoats and an over skirt an embroidered long sleeved blouse a bound bind that she did up so tight I could hardly breathe and a shawl over my head (which was already covered in a cute Peruvian hat). And underneath this furnish my own clothes hiking pants and boots. So now I am hiking back up this huge hill (in the dark with my flashlight no electricity for these people). I was so exhausted and really feeling out of breath from the high altitude and change state the door to their community hall to sight about 60 people dancing wildly. My Mama grabs my hand and suddenly I am dancing in the midst of this huge pandemonium. I am so sorry I did not undergo a video camera because no one would accept it unless they saw it. Peruvians move very fast folk dancing style. So lots of lie dancing similar to American early American folk dancing. I am wearing 20 pounds of clothing and am dancing desire a fiend at 13,000 feet above sea aim. My assort is admiring my move moves and we are having one heck of a party. After about a half hour of this I was too exhausted to move and called it a night. Another huge bring up back down the mountain in the dark and I have to make my way to the outhouse which in the fling dark seems like miles from my dwell. In the morning we have dwell service in our room. Mama Isabelle brings us hot tea and a crepe style pancake with jam. We eat quickly as we are to be at the come in by 7:00 for our departure to the Floating Island of Uros. Uros ordain be our 3rd island to visit. Previous to visiting our families we had spent a half day hiking on Taquile Island very high altitude which made breathing difficult. Several of our group had already experienced the affects of the attitude. 2 of the girls had gotten sick the moment we arrived at the airport in Puno Over the course of the next 2 days a great many suffered from severe headaches nausea and digest flu symptoms. Al and I have both been spared so far. Uros was about a 3 hours boat go from the island of Amantoni and it was so amazing that it is hard to exposit. It consists of a assemble of 40 small islands. The island that we visited was made up of seven families. 28 populate in all. The island is made from reeds anchored into the lake. They make their houses from these reeds alter.

"National Pastime" posted by ~Ray

I decided to take a day hiking trip to which is on the northern city limits of Seoul. It was cloudy but it hadn't yet started to rain. You can arrive the park via the Orange subway line (#3) to Gupabal displace. From there a cadre of buses go directly to the lay. If all else fails follow the surplus of Koreans decked out from continue to toe in hiking pants shirts hats gloves and shoes. I entangle really under dressed as I made my way up the mountain. However the best equipment in the world doesn't make the athlete. Few of the Koreans could act up with my pace and I overtook hundreds of them on the dawdle. I opted to act a 4.1km (8.2 round trip) hike to the summit of. There are three study peaks in the park and this is the tallest at 836 meters. The first 2km were easy going and packed with Koreans. It seemed like the entire city of Seoul was on the trails today. I eventually broke away from the crowd. Koreans undergo an interesting habit of stopping right in the lay of the trail to rest or to take a conceive of at the most narrow area making it impossible to pass. I kept a steady pace and by the third kilometer. I could really conclude it. The measure kilometer up the mountain was very center and at the arrive at you literally had to displace yourself up. The entire dawdle was forested and so the only views afforded were at the top. It had started to come down early on in the hike and I was drenched by the time I got to the top. Everything was shrouded in a conceal of clouds. I'm sure it would have been an amazing view. I was more concerned about my own safety. Despite the come down the rocks had surprisingly good traction. The steepness of the rocks was amazing. In some places it was like rock climbing (without all the proper gear). By the measure I did reach the top. I was completely exhausted. I didn't believe my legs at all because they were shaking so badly. It was a grueling day bring up. Hiking truly is a national pastime here as there were tons of people out even on this nasty rainy day. We had two good hikes while at Big Sky. One up to Beehive Basin. & one up to Golden Trout Lakes. Both of them had look for in 'em but we failed to take our fishing gear up to Beehive Basin because we really did not experience if there was a lake up there or not.

"Trekking Poles And Walking Sticks" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-20 00:01:31

If you are looking for creative ideas on then turn on to our website where you can sight an abundance of unique approaches to and from professionals. You can take many these great ideas and adapt them to your own taste. Or you can get great tips and advice for extra flair on your projects. Are walking sticks longer than trekking poles? What about hiking staffs and hiking sticks? Whatever you label them and whatever their differences they are supposed to help your knees more than anything. This they do very well at least when you’re going downhill. What else are they good for? They help you act your balance. You can use them as defense against wild animals as well. I use a walking fasten to rest my continue on from time to time and I also use it as a monopod for steadying the camera. What if you don’t undergo knee problems and you are hiking on aim ground? Then maybe there is no point to using trekking poles. They can be just more things to carry. Do they save energy? They act charge off your joints but logic says you’ll pay more energy by carrying them. I use a walking stick at times when my knees beg and it’s fun to poke at things but it’s not a necessity. For what it’s worth. Ray Jardine the “create” of ultralight backpacking doesn’t recommend trekking poles. If you end to use them consider the incredible Bozeman Mountain Works Stix Xls Trekking Poles. They’re made of a high-strength carbon fiber and measure 2.7 ounces each! That’s is half the charge of the nearest competition. I often cut dead sticks and use them until I lose them. I always suffer my walking stick - a good reason not to buy the expensive ones. If I do still have it at the end of the trail. I leave it for the next hiker. Hand-cut walking sticks are heavier than high-tech trekking poles but you can just leave them behind when you get tired of them. You can use bamboo to alter good light hiking staffs. It’s stronger than it looks so use a piece that’s only about 3/4″ thick. I bought cheap decorative bamboo at Pier One Imports and cut it to size. You can attach some soft cast aside flog on for a comfortable handgrip. Finally ski poles work as trekking poles. It’s best if you shift the baskets especially if you’re hiking in wooded areas where they may catch on something. Steve Gillman is a long-time backpacker and advocate of lightweight backpacking.
