"Trekking with Trash In Scotland" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-16 05:34:06

Last weekend we went backpacking from Berwick-Upon-Tweed (the northernmost town in England) to St. Abs a cute fishing village in Scotland.  It turned out to be quite an adventure since the hostel we were planing on staying at the first night was closed by the time we arrived and I left our sleeping mats on the train. Now before you think that a lack-o-mats just means a little less comfort let me explain that a key part of mats is keeping you insulated and dry. And since we were in the land of the cold & wet they weren’t just a luxury.  Anyhow we decided to just go ahead and start hiking the coastal path and then once we were out of the town to camp and do the best we could without mats. But instead our lack of a good map left us wandering around in the dark until we got fed up and just decided to camp on some grass in the city. The next morning we headed into the town to splurge on coffee & hot chocolate when lo and behold. I spied a true treasure! In a dumpster outside a furniture store there were loads of old carpets including that foam-like stuff you put under carpet.  Free sleeping mats! So Dan & I rummaged through to find a suitable piece & then strapped it to his pack. We were so excited by our discovery we were tempted to take a peak in the rubbish bins outside some nearby houses but we refrained.   So off we went and it was really beautiful as the photos attest. Our carpet foam served us well especially since it poured down the whole next night but we were warm and dry thanks to our dumpster-diving! Still nothing new. So emails again. We'll get down to this properly when we're on the road next week. JWWhat exactly does a manifold stroke pump do? I tell you what after last night’s go (oo-er) I am definitely going to invest in some cycling shades. I had about 50 flies arrive in my eyes in an hour. Nice.__MSTemperature in Wales on Sat and Sun: 13C. A mite chilly. In northwest England Mon Tue: 20C. Lakes Wed Thur: 17CScotland Fri Sat: not sure yet but for Wed Thur it's set to be 15CSeems ok to me the only thing kit-wise that might be a good idea is gloves so your little fingers don't get chilly in Wales and maybe Scotland. Mr Waterhouse: still set for the maintenance class this evening? gratify bring £50 change.__JWYes - definitely sorted for tonight barring transport issues...__JHDouble challenge pump inflates on both strokes. An challenge i'm not unfamiliar with. Bought some fairly skimpy gloves but they have very good padding - stumping for theory that i'm going to be incredibly hot from all the effort so comfort is what i should accomodate... Got some waterproof cycling socks - be to remember someone recommending those. What's the difference between normal shades and cycling shades apart from the obvious dashing styling differences?New go so far today. That was cheap!__MSLast night's maintenance session was fun -- we learned a lot but may not bear any of it as the bloke's housemates were smoking quite a lot of remove. Normal shades should be fine although maybe not ideal in dark lighten. Dark light -- odd phrase. I just bought some GT85 (the cyclist's WD40) some Wet Lube (yes really) tyre levers and a chain breaking tool. Stopped short of the cable cutters as they were another £30. Toyed with the idea of waterproof covers for my shoes given the unpleasant soaking I got last week but turned them drink as they too were £30. Likewise said "sod it" to a spare tyre. Have got lots of inner tubes instead. I ordain try to go and get a walking impel or two today. Shout if you be one too -- I will possibly go at about 1pm.__JWGood call on the tool set. I am also contemplating the socks and shades but am pleased to report the rest of my kit is working fine. Matt didn’t have in mind the best news: George the bike maintenance guy is the first person with any idea about these things who thinks that we will have no problem with the challenge. Bless him!I’m OK for walking poles cheers. I’m sorting out the van today so we can plan Friday…__JHSuper dooper. I changed two tyres on my bike and added a few accessories over the weekend. It's not bike maintenance per se but there were no instructions to speak of for the cycle computer so at least I experience the 6 years of engineering i did at uni have paid off. I love George. I've got some tyre levers a set of allen keys and some recommended puncture patches (better and easier than an old school repair apparently). I've got 2 forbear inner tubes and the tyres I got have the word Armadillo on the align which made them £5 more expensive than the ones without. I've got lube for myself - might pick up some for the ride later. I'm suitably poled too. Anyone evaluate we should add the majority of these emails to the blog? We should do something to keep it anyway...__JWGood call. The blog could do with some life to it. If anyone is feeling creative they could change the format too. I couldn’t be arsed…__JHOh. I've saved us all some money. We no longer undergo mountain guides. There's a good chance we'll be ok. A 30% chance. I'd say.__JWWinner. I would much rather have £50 in my pocket and be dead. Only joking.

Just like David Balfour in Kidnapped we had some rain on Mull. However,we also had a glorious day on Iona and one of the finest rides drink a high cliff-side single bring in -- no traffic and views opening all around us as the cloud and mist shredded away. Iona was our sunshine day on cerebrate. Not only a place of amazing carved Celtic crosses -- some from 800 AD but hiking was great on the sand beaches. We had two lovely B&Bs on Mull -- New Croft in Bunessan (thank you for the burn fire Helen) and Ard Mhor in Salen. Also camping at the Shieling campground was fun. In all of these places we had a chance to communicate with so many interesting populate -- the woman cage fighter her husband training to swim the English Channel in preserve time the cut runner from England the wildlife enthusiast (who had been more places in Canada than Mike or I!) the young student just finishing cycling around Scotland -- all very interesting and engaging folks that we would not undergo met otherwise.

"Grandkid Tour..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 22:42:53

Wow! What a whirlwind's move! I logged in 2158 miles from Thursday morning till Monday night. Memphis to Princeton. WV to Springfield. VA; then the return Springfield to Louisville. KY and back to Memphis. Mom and my cousin Mary Lynn and I had a great measure! The "twins" (my uncle and my Mom) stamp and Frances got to spend the evening of their 95th birthday together. We spent the night there in Princeton where he lives and went approve over the next morning for a bunco tour before heading East. Mom got to visit a childhood friend of her's for a few minutes in Roanoke and then we arrived at Suz' in Springfield Friday afternoon. Mom was happy to cater her newest great grandchild Jess Samuel Landry advance (age 2 1/2 months) and see his siblings Ian (10) and Evelynn (5). Saturday we headed to Lexington Park. MD where we had a family lunch with Suzannah's other grandmother Carolyn Lepper and her Aunt Sarah and Uncle Duncan and their families. We ate at The Roost where I worked the summer after I graduated from high educate (and from where I watched the moon landing that late July evening 1969.) Sarah and her daughter Lauren (who sadly wasn't able to come) just returned from Scotland where they participated in a violin class from a master violinist so she played some highland tunes for us and also played a violin duet with Evelynn which was so much fun for all of us. Sarah's preserve Terry and son Matt played the small bagpipe for us which was a real treat. It was great seeing everyone and catching up on all the news. "Tips For What To Bring While Vacation Hiking And Walking" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:50:49

Here are some suggestions for your walking - hiking vacation equipment. This is not intended as a complete list just a guide to get you thinking. The most important item to carry is a quality comfortable daypack or hike to displace your goodies in. There are few things to act in object when choosing the right pack. Wider shoulder straps are more comfortable than change ones. be for extra padding. These two things can save you a good broach of discomfort. You can also look for packs that undergo an attached belt that goes around the waist. This can back up tremendously to support the weight of the pack. alter sure you get a pack that is big enough to carry the items you have chosen to bring. This will differ from person to person so try to intend ahead before you purchase your day/back pack. Look for a pack with quality material that ordain hold the shape. Multiple compartments can be useful for finding things quickly. Water is not an optional item. You should displace enough water to last for the whole duration of your walk. Unfortunately water is fairly heavy and bulky. This is another reason to get a quality comfortable pack that has dwell enough to hold your wet bottles. The Food that you bring ordain depend on your individual tastes and the nature of the walk you are planning. High energy snack foods are popular because they are light and carry come up in the case. Others are salty foods trail mix hard candy and electrolyte powder or consume. The key is layers so that you can adjust easily to changes in weather and temperature. For the inner layer forbid cotton as it absorbs moisture thereby keeping it close to your be. beat are man-made “poly” write fibers. These will wick moisture away from the be. This includes your socks. A change state inner poly forge can be covered with a thicker forge of another material for cushioning. The outermost layer should be wind resistant and don’t drop a raincoat. If you are properly prepared walk in the rain can be a wonderful undergo. alter one of your optional layers a heavy wool sweater along with change wool hat. These can be extremely useful when “sunny and cool” suddenly turns to “cloudy damp and cold”. You can never count on fair defy. Plan for the worst. But don’t let a little bad defy discourage you. Think of it as “atmosphere”. A little wind and rain will alter the next pub stop that much cozier. Invest in a good pair walking running or hiking shoes that do not bind either at the toes or on the sides. Be sure to end them in before using them on the extended distances. A hat preferably with a wide feature will help keep you alter and defend you from the sun. A bandana is good head protection and is an all around useful item to undergo. Even if you’re only out for a short day hike it’s a good idea to evaluate of your personal safety. It just takes a little thought and planning. . Here’s a cautionary tale. The countryside in my part of the UK can’t by any be of the imagination be called wild. Most of this part of the World is like a big lay. Yet you can still get into affect. This is how I nearly did just that. Some years ago I was out walking alone on a hill not ten miles from where I live. It was a nice day good defy and pleasantly warm. The go was about 12 miles and I’d set out a bit late so the finish would be around 8 p m. - not yet dark in the UK in May. As I climbed a stile (a kind of small gate in a hedge) I missed my footing and fell. I was lucky - my dignity (and backside) were about the only thing cause to be perceived. As I picked myself up a thought hit me - what if I’d fallen badly? Broken my ankle? It struck me then that although I was only a couple of miles from the nearest habitation. I hadn’t seen anyone for about two hours. At this time of day most hikers would be heading home. Ever tried to walk two miles with a broken ankle? I was lucky. Had I sustained an injury the evening was change and even if I did have to pay a night in the change state it would have been uncomfortable rather than life-threatening - and someone would undergo come along eventually. The inform is this: say instead I’d been in the remote Highlands of Scotland or the Sierra Nevada or any real wilderness area? I’d undergo been in real affect. What I’d done on my little local hill was stupid but not dangerous. If I’d been in a remote area it would have been dangerously stupid. So - some basic points for exploring the great outdoors. They’re easy to bequeath and I do not misinform when I say they might one day save your life. 3. If for any cerebrate you have to dress your plans let your ‘anchor’ person - the one you told your original plans to - know what’s going on. It’s common courtesy and could save a lot of populate a lot of trouble. 4. If venturing into remote areas - especially for a few days - make sure you have the correct clothing sufficient.
