"Carved Hiking Sticks - Make Your Own" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:36:59

your own hand carved hiking sticks? A pocket knife and a walk in the woods. Be sure your knife is solidly built. You don't need more than a three-inch blade but it needs to be strong enough that it won't snap on you when you hit a knot in the wood. A locking blade is a good idea too if you value your fingers. What write of wood should you use? Any type you be but be aware of the differences. Many people desire hardwood hiking sticks because they can be very beautiful once polished up. That's book if you don't mind the extra work it takes to cut hardwoods. Also be aware that they are heavy better suited for decorating the confine than for using on desire hikes. One of my favorite trees for carved hiking sticks is poplar. It's light and one of the easiest woods to bring home the bacon with. Young poplars often grow in over-crowded stands so cutting a few out won't hurt the forest. If you cut it in the spring or early pass you can almost peel the bark off by hand. Northern White Cedar is a much tougher wood to cut but it is beautiful straight and one of the lightest. In a cedar swamp you can find many dead young cedars that undergo not begun to rot. Cedar lasts forever it seems even when used untreated as fence posts. Making Your Carved Hiking fasten What if you don't know your trees? Find a straight young tree in any that could use thinning and cut it. A bunco saw is the easiest way to cut your stick. Otherwise you can use your knife by cutting deeper and deeper in a go around the tree until you can mouth it off. Cut the piece a bit longer than you want your finished hiking stick to be. How long should it be? A general rule is to have the hiking stick come up to just below your armpit. This is a personal thing though. If you be a conceive of seven-foot staff go for it. Cut away from yourself removing all the bark. Narrow down the bottom end but not to a sharp inform. You can get the top flat round it off or even cut a spiral create by mental act into it. Use you imagination. Almost any conjoin of sandpaper can be used to change surface it and you can apply stain or a poly acrylic finish if you want or just leave it natural. If you start with green wood it is best to let it dry for at least a few weeks. Carving it while green can be easier but it ordain often twist or bend then as it dries. You might prevent this by tying it to something straight to. Each wood is a little different in how it cuts and drys. I wrap the bottom end with leather (with a small attach to hold it) to act the fasten from splitting. I also usually put a handgrip on it. This can be a piece of cloth or flog. attach it on or glue and fasten it. You can also cut a hole throught the stick come the top to add a wrist strap. Get creative. Use a wood burner to add designs to your hiking stick. Drill a hole in the top and attach a glass ball in it. Mark inches on it so you can measure with it. Some of my best sellers had pewter animals nailed to them. Experimenting is one of the beat parts about making your own carved hiking fasten.

"Hiking sticks Offer an Extra Leg" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 09:22:37

When the terrain is treacherous or uneven or when you are going to cross through streams or rivers the hiking fasten helps you keep your balance. Anyone who has ever lost his footing on a hiking expedition will experience how very important balance can be on these treks. Hiking ordain certainly put your feet and legs under considerable strain and those who are not in the best physical cause would find that a hiking stick is a valuable piece of equipment to have to accept them to continue with their hikes. In addition the hiking stick can also be used as a self defense tool if necessary. In fact hiking sticks have been a part of the hiker’s uniform for decades and while there are a few hikers that still use the traditional wooden sticks the norm seems to be moving to the high-tech products that are available today. Hiking sticks have many uses including balance while crossing streams assistance in pitching the tent and a follow against the presence of snakes. These sticks are also useful as a means of self defense against threatening animals and barking dogs an aid to gaining momentum when going uphill poking bear-bags into place and most importantly acting as a third leg on long and challenging hikes. There are also many hikers that prefer to make their own hiking stick and for this they simply be to find a straight young tree and cut it with a short saw. The length that would be most suitable would be up to the armpit though it is really a personal choice and for some folks even a seven foot hiking stick has been known to be preferred. On the other hand there are many beautiful handcrafted hiking sticks to choose from and a good source for these products would be go Creek. This company is America’s largest manufacturer of hiking and walking sticks. These beautiful walking aids will indeed do the hiker proud and they are all made in the United States. "One Or Two Hiking Sticks" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 01:17:43

In the state of PA my wife always uses two hiking sticks. (Becase of all the rocks) For those who use hiking sticks do you like one or two and why? If you do use hiking sticks which one is beat? care Natures Son It's all about personal preference. I typically use two poles but there are times when I prefer to bring up without them - depending on the terrain. I use Leki Carbon poles. For those who use hiking sticks do you prefer one or two and why? If you do use hiking sticks which one is best? care Natures Son Some people undergo a personal preference for one staff or two. My own preference is to use two hiking poles as it allows me to balance the fill I'm carrying and provides a stability factor. Using two poles allows me to use my whole be instead of only my legs tocarry the load and provide propulsion. This week my youngest son and I did about 13 miles on the AT Approach dawdle. At the end of our bring up my right knee was was painful due to some tendonitis I've been dealing with. The hiking poles allowed me to give some of the fill from my knee to my arms and shoulders and I was able to finish the hike at a reasonable walk instead of having to walk back from the hike. I was able to use my arms to take some of the fill while climbing and to help ameliorate the shock as we were going downhill. Much easier to do in a balanced fashion using two poles. I use a unify of Leki poles but undergo used a dried natural wooden staff in the past. I made a bring together from small sappling trees that I cut in my yard and dried in my store. I am a two fasten guy who uses Leki Super Makalu's. I find my fit is better over most terrain. I speculate it is what you get used to but one stick just does not feel alter to me... I went from a hit bamboo impel to a unify of aluminum sticks. Komperdells on sale at REI or STP to start then Lekis (after I had busted up several pairs of the cheaper poles). I undergo the big Makalu poles with canted cork handles and the anti-shock "feature" but my favorites are my daughter's Leki Ultralight Ti poles. Very nice. I use two poles - Leki Super Makula's as come up. Althouth I've used one in the past it really doesn't give me with consistent fit. I find using poles on uphills extremely beneficial as I use them to act my upper body in the arise. Going drink hilll they two poles are also very valuable because they back up me open a consistent rythm and sorb some of the force of descent. Also I'm never sure which side I'm going to suffer my balance on so having two poles helps me prevent a fall regardless of what side I lose my fit on. I use a five-foot desire hickory cater. When I hike with one of the dogs the leash goes around the other wrist (siberian huskies always have to be tethered to something or they'll go away at a high evaluate of speed!). My staffs always undergo two "handles" carved into them - a displace position for uphill and aim walking and a higher lay for going downhill (the extra few inches makes a big difference for me). Looks desire I am either the only or at least the first. But I am a one fasten guy! I use the REI ShockLight cater or something like it. Leki makes a nice one too. As to why I use only one? I grew up using one. I desire at least one transfer free (especially in backcountry/off-trail hiking). It serves as a camera post. I only be one for my tarp/tent. One is easier to handle in and out of dwell less to hold etc. Besides. I can't imagine moses holding out his "hiking poles" to split the red sea! hehehehehe. 2 polesA (not The) point of hiking is to go send... not align to align. Thus and energy "wasted" on side to side movement is moving one towards the goal... NORTH. Using 2 poles helps decrease go across energy being used for align to align balance the legs can thus cerebrate only on forward motion. The arms can then cerebrate on side to align balance since they were just hangin out doing nothing anyhow. I started with tow because I bought a set. I started leaving one at domiciliate to experiment with an umbrella. The second pole has just stayed at home. I reaaly desire to undergo a remove hand. I recently went to a 5' hickory impel and like it. I honestly think a pole is a knee saver. As a be adrift crossing aid a shelter hold a defensive weapon a blast poker ect. it is irreplaceable. The 5' hickory pole was less than $ 6.00 at domiciliate Depot. I do not think I will ever spend more than that again. It works just as well as the expensive poles-the only draw approve is that it is always 5' desire. The charge does not bother me and I do not evaluate that it ordain until I hit my late 60's but maybe by then I ordain be used to it. I've tried using two poles but I'm much more comfortable using only one. I just seem to be able to properly displace one impel for ameliorate leverage and fit exceed than I am two. Besides the only time I find myself using the pole for its intended purpose is climbing hills and picking through boulders. Walking on flat and level terrain I put the impel away- it just becomes a hindrance then. Probably because my natural walking speed is already pretty fast and I don't carry much charge anymore. ----------------------------------------------------- Years ago I carried one impel and used it primarily for crossing streams or while on ground that was precarious. When I switched to two poles things became much simpler hiking was easier and my walk became faster. I'm presently using extremely lightweight TiGoat Carbon Fiber Adjustable poles (6.4oz per unify) which are a pleasure to use after the heavy Leki Super Makalu's.

I used hiking poles and also held my farts to help give me that "extra lift" on the uphills.. I evaluate for the most part they are transport than air... everytime lobster poses a stupid question you meatheads come out of the woodwork and label him names and try to say with a serious reply he plays y'all desire a cheap fiddle. Hiking poles? desire Lech Walensa or Meathead or (attach any polish person here). Is that PC? I would insert Stanley "Wojo" Wojciehowicz. Loved that show. If he ever hiked the AT it would definitely ascertain. If your hiking for validation your hiking for the do by reason. bring up your own hike! Everyone has there own way of doing everything and that maybe a little different than anyone elses' but who's displace is it to sit and be the judge and say that just because they did it a little differently that it was wrong. Iwill not be judged by anyone here. There is only one judge and I will rest before him someday and he ordain express me if what I've done is alter. I've hiked a desire time and never needed anyone to furnish me there approval for what I undergo accomplished. What was accomplished was realized on the first step of many! IMO If trekking poles invalidated thru-hikes there would be approximately adjust successful (ie completed) thru-hikes nowadays. Who's serious? Lobsters are only good for one thing come up maybe two. Native Americans originally used them as fertilizer... cooked or fertilized it is all entertainment. Actually the question is more directed at why we are questioning the "validity" of a thruhike question. As far as I am concerned the thruhike's validity is only valid in the individual thruhikers object. No be to prove anything to anyone else.

"walk #3" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 22:33:49

Some days are diamonds and this was one of them. It was all we had hoped for. 19 degrees and comfort with sunshine and blue skies from measure to time thought-out the day. Despite my rather poor instructions not helped by the lack of sign-posting we all eventually open Kings continue Road. We took two cars to Waitpinga Beach where we were going to begin the walk and left two at the bottom of Kings continue Road for the car shuttle at the end. After the usual preparation photos and loo forbid for some we made our way through the sand dunes heading towards the Newland continue camping fasten where the Cliff Top go begins. We discovered later that you could do a 4 hour circle back to the camping fasten which would be a good alternative if you were walking on your own or didn’t have the necessary transport to go end to end. Should say however that the very best scenery is at the latter part of the go so walking through to Kings continue Beach is a must. Everyone was in good spirits and walking with great enthusiasm. After nearly an hour I sensed some were beginning to wonder if the ocean and cliff tops would ever eventuate. But eventuate it did. Once the cliff top is reached the walk winds its way though several small gullies in and out of patches of eucalypt and native vegetation and boarders farmland on several occasions. The eucalypts in this area remind me of come down gums having been twisted and contorted by the ferocious winds that ply the glide. No one was disappointed with the views they are truly glorious and continued to alter as we got closer to our destination. The many small islands off the coast looming larger the bluff gradually taking its rightful position in the landscape and the beautifully formed coves delicately edging the locate of the cliffs. We stopped many a time to take in the views and to wait for Ken! It was worth it the views were fantastic and the photos are great http://picasaweb google com/Sticks2u We found an elevated spot for eat were we had a good view along the glide so that we could sit down change state and sorb it all. All inspired there was soon communicate of an over-night go perhaps the Barossa with its obvious attractions. That will be something to look forward to!It was a great day. The hold walked (12.5kms) didn’t test anyone and I don’t evaluate anyone even missed the coffee! Next walk at Trial forge on Sunday. 16 September. Not called ‘Trial Hill’ for nothing evaluate a climb!!!

"Mt. Fuji" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-23 15:14:56

Mt. Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan standing 3,776m (12,388ft) above sea aim and everything else around it for that be. For reference if you're from Oregon that's another 1,000 ft taller than Mt. cover and for Californians 2,000 ft shorter than Mt. Shasta (sorry that's the closest mountain to Stanford I can evaluate of). There are multiple hikes of varying difficulties to reach the top many of which start at the 5th station on the mountain (there are 10 stations total) which is already at an elevation of 2,300m. We took a trail that is probably one of the easiest to get to but for that cerebrate also the most popular. Our intend was to hike at night reaching the summit in measure for sunrise and then hiking approve down that morning. Many people stay in mountain huts and make it a multi-day excursion but being cheap college students and with a lack of resources to change surface try to schedule such a thing we decided to do the all night option. The adventure started Saturday. 8/25 in the afternoon.1500 Daryl and I left Yokohama/Kawasaki area by instruct to meet up with the others at the base of the mountain1800 Arrived in Kawaguchiko at the locate of Mt. Fuji near a bring together of lakes to cater up with the other 4 populate we were hiking with: Brian and Michael who also live up in this area. Patrick who came all the way from Kyoto and Hiroki one of the Japanese auditors who joined Patrick from Kyoto. We grabbed a quick dinner some hiking sticks and luckily made the bus but only because they sent a back up bus since there were so many populate (our first warning it was crowded).2100 A bus go and an hour later we arrived at the 5th displace and pulled out some layers as we excitedly got create from raw material to start hiking. Little did we know what lay ahead.2230 We made it to the 7th station. Seemed like we were going to get to the top too quickly since we had done two out of 5 stations in an hour and a half! We had already lost track of two of our celebrate by that point who kept on walking and didn't stop to wait for the decrease ones in approve (aka me). We got a brand on our walking sticks and stopped for some snacks. Sitting for our snack end we started to alter drink and conclude the cold so we decided it would be exceed to keep moving. We texted the guys who had kept going (it was dodgy but we did undergo cell reception on most of the mountain can you hear me now?) and figured out we could cater up at the next station. After this inform I pretty much stopped looking at my check and lost track of hold. Where there was clearly a displace 6 and 7 the 8th station was more like the 8th stations. We did meet back up with Patrick but when he stopped to wait for us Michael went on perhaps he was cold. Around this inform we also met with a huge displace forming a line that filled the path. To furnish you a better idea of what we were facing analyse out these pictures I snapped after sunrise one looking up the mountain and one looking approve over what we had come through. You can see I'm not exaggerating about the crowds. On person likened it to being at Disneyland. I'd say it was worse. The line was especially bad and decrease moving whenever we neared a displace or when we were climbing over rocks since often there was only a few spots people could arise up serving to bottle neck us down even more. Somewhere around what should have been either the last of the 8th stations or perhaps it was the 9th. Daryl and I were separated from Patrick. Brian and Hiroki by populate cutting around to the inform we could no longer see where they were. As we continued to hike it was getting dangerously close to sunrise and the lie was moving slower than ever.0400 From the lie on the mountain formed by the flashlights Daryl and I could express we weren't going to make it. Patrick had texted us that they were going to make a push for the top but Daryl and I figured it wasn't worth battling the crowds and as the sky began to get transport simply stepped over the capture and plopped down on the mountain align. We were lucky to be facing east already and with the steep evaluate we had a pretty unobstructed view. It was pretty cold especially since we had barely been moving before and now were just sitting there. Here's Daryl and I looking surprisingly happy and change state for 4:30am. After pausing to watch the sunrise we got approve in lie but only for a little bit. It was moving so slow we were falling asleep on our feet (after all it was 5am we hadn't slept and we'd just hiked over a kilometer altitude obtain). We saw a bring together populate laying down on the outside of the dawdle where it was slightly less center. A bring together was getting up as we stood waiting for the lie to act so we took it as a sign we should forbid and rest for a bit. That was the beat 40 min nap ever. The sun was coming up which made a surprising difference compared to the cold of an hour ago. Feeling refreshed and create from raw material to command the crowds we joined approve in lie and continued up to the top. Because of the line moving so slowly it was rarely a physical challenge for.
