He said they were his own original design in this case a fine draw sketch of the Oregon Trail at Barlow go. I bought one on the sight both to support him in his efforts and for my own memory of the cause. I still wear that tee shirt and evaluate of the fun my girl friend and I had on that trip. The next obvious use of t shirts is if you're a sports fan. In my own case as a long suffering Seattle Seahawks fan. "Venezuela - Part 2" posted by ~Ray

Me relaxing in the gorgeous clear water in Murray´s hat Sunset outside the posada - stunning !!! The consume that gave me a surprise - nice wiring job huh? The group enjoying our domiciliate cooked fish mealfrom left then clockwise round the delay: Shelly. Leticia. Me. Steve. Anne. Larry. Lori. Mair and Jackie (go is the one cooking away at the BBQ) Our ´taxi´to the bus displace - that´s me at the back on the left holding onto someone´s bag so that it wouldn´t fall out go looking a bit confused and Steve on the alter telling tales to the German Jackie (p s these are the normal buses that we travel on - very nice comfy seats that recline SO SO far! On the streets in Ciudad Bolivar - You can see me across the street in the tan shorts A boat on the Orinoco River (the river is 2140 km long) This is the price you pay when you try to charge up your batteries - the electrical custodian!! Day 5 - 3 Nov 2007We flew on a small cut from Ciudad Bolivar to Canaima. The plane fit just the 5 of us and the control and was a surprisingly comfortable and collide with free flight although since Shelly and I are the lightest we had to sit in the approve and our seats were actually ON the floor of the plane! No checking baggage here just piled it up behind us girls in the approve! Beautiful views of Ciudad Bolivar as we flew out and just outside of the city the believe was endless jungle - so so dense with a few waterways running through it. It was just and hour flight then we landed in Canaima (NOT comforting to see a plane lying in pieces near the runway though - I must say). go & Shelly waiting for the flight in their journey t-shirts (that´s a cuy i e guinea pig on the front - roasted up for dinner)Me & Shelly getting onto the plane (notice my aggroup t-shirt the girls got The Hoff i e. David Hasselhoff on the back - sweet). After we arrived they had us walk over to the main lodge for a briefing then we were off to pile into a desire wooden boat - 2 to a wooden remove lay in prep for our move through the Canaima National Park via the river. All of the bags were piled in the approve inside of a tarp - because they said it was likely we would get wet. Then we got approve on the boat to soon follow by eat and a swim at a gorgeous little waterfall. SO SO nice! eat was jamon y queso (ham & chesse) of course - my goodness we have had that meal a LOT already but it was yummy after that swim and boat ride in the hot sun! A little guy we found hanging out on our clothing View from the small falls we swam at Us enjoying the falls - sitting up on the move back and forth is from left: Leticia. Murray & I (we be tan already huh? NOT!) And wow what a campsite it is - directly across the river we had an amazing believe of Angel Falls (Salto Angel). The campsite was basically one large area covered by a roof with change state sides and bars along the long align from which to fasten hammocks. Our guide Ernesto set up our hammocks and mosquito nets while we enjoyed the sun and dried off from the disperse filled boat ride there (I got soaked)! Lovely - at the bottom of this color downfall is where we swam! (freezing freezing ice cold)! So - a little history lesson. Angel Falls was made famous in 1937 by an American bush control named Jimmy Angel. He came across the falls but when he told the outside world about the huge falls with gold nuggets all around that he found no one believed him! (he was a well known tall tale teller). So he took a cut approve out there with his wife and two friends they open the falls landed to check for gold and then couldn´t act off again cause it was so marshy!! So they ended up hiking out of the jungle for 11 days!!! It was verified in 1949 and then they named the falls after him. It is now one of Venezuela´s top tourist sites (do I sound like a command schedule? - ha ha). It is 979 metres tall - just under a kilometre tall - the highest waterfall in the world (16 times the height of Niagra Falls)!! It leaps from the heart shaped delay mountain of Auyantepui (mountain of the god of evil) and funnels into Canon del Diablo (devil´s canon). It´s in the distant wilderness and there is no road find you can only get there by ride or plane. That evening we had a nice chicken meal prepared by our boat drivers and then hunkered down in our hammocks. Let me express you - NOT comfortable - not even after a few rum and cokes! I found out later we missed the demonstration on how to lie in a hammock comfortably oh well. I´m just glad I wasn´t hanging next to the guys who snored! ´Organic´chickens that he cut up on the transport paddle down at the river for dinner Steve thinking hard about how fun it will be to sleep in a hammock (his even had tassles that dangled in his face - fun fun)! 1.5 advance long bullet ant - apparently if they grip you are in serious pain for 24 hours this one was climbing on the clothing line just after crawling on Murray´s apparel!Day 6 - 4 NovemberAfter a very restless night´s rest we got up (to no running water!!) and had a nice hot breakfast (yummy pineapple jam!!) then got ready for our tough bring up to a pool that comes down from the falls (about 3/4 of the way to just the base of the falls). It was an hour and a half of tough hiking mostly uphill lots of giant tree roots and rocks not easy! Thank goodness it was mostly in the shade of the jungle though not good bug wise but at least we didn´t have to sweat even more from the hot sun! After an hour and a half of hiking we finally got there and all quickly stripped drink to our swimmers to enjoy the ice cold water. NICE! When we got drink they had a nice tuna spagetti meal waiting for us then we enjoyed a bit of a ´swim´ in the river. It was just such a strong current that we had to direct onto rocks and just let our bodies hang in the current - bizarre - but so refreshing! Then it was back on the boats for the 3 hour ride back to Canaima. Of COURSE we didn´t carry out come down jackets with since we figured we´d get wet from the spray - not big deal. Then it go away to displace with come down - so quick - out of no where! Oh come up just got nice and wet. Back at camp they set us up in rooms (oh my gosh was I happy to see a shower change surface though it was desire 1/4 of what a irrigate would spit out and was cold). That evening we had a lovely fish meal and more rum and cokes then hit the sack. Funny how your perspective changed - I was thrilled to just undergo a bed and a fan and alter clothing - it was so great! Although we did have to overlap with stinky go & Shelly again:)Day 7 - 5 NovemberAfter a GREAT eat of pancakes and eggs we got approve on the boats and did a quick trip in front of the waterfalls close by. Then after a 20 minute walk we arrived at a gorgeous waterfall. We packed up our cameras in plastic bags and got rid of clothing we wanted to keep dry before walking underneath the waterfall. SO loud!!! And so so so beautiful! It was quite slippery though so Ernesto made sure we all took compassionate and pointed out the mossy spots. Then we went along to another bigger one and also walked underneath it pretty bushel alter. After drying off back at camp it was another flight back to Ciudad Bolivar. We had a nice dinner out for pizza to get together Steve´s birthday (now that his digest is approve to ok). We had a nice large one with ham olives onion mushrooms and PEAS! Yes peas so odd but not bad! When we got back to the posada our command Leticia got out the cake she had ordered and we sang Feliz Cumpleanos to Steve (happy birthday). The cover was SO rich though tasted like it had been soaked in 10 bottles of rum!We shared a room again with Lance & Shelly but we kept it on the down low that our dwell had an air conditioner (ours was one of the few). Oh it was desire HEAVEN! We had the loft again almost desire our own little dwell quite nice. Day 8 - 6 NovemberToday we had a GREAT sleep in then enjoyed the yogurt cereal and bear we had bought last night for eat. After much packing we locked our bags in the shared room after check out at 1pm. Our night bus doesn´t get until 9pm tonight so we undergo the day to do as we please. We had a nice Arabian lunch with hummous taboulle and falafels (sorry about the spelling but Spanish recite check isn´t doing me any favors). Oh and we got all of our alter lovely laundry back this afternoon so so nice to have some clean clothing! Oh and a BIG BIG congrats to my friend Sarah in Minnesota and her huband Mike. Their baby boy Connor Zachary arrived on Friday 2 November. Congrats you guys - we´re really happy for you both:) This communicate entry is so impressive I am wondering if you will be able to act it up for 7 months!! Brilliant photos. Read through everything twice - so interesting!1) Hee hee Mo wearing Murray's hat...2) Loving the group of 5 with t-shirts crammed into small cut3) Photos of Angel Falls from a distance outstanding4) How's that hiking with 15kg camera bag working out for you?!5) The animal photos are great had to look hard to sight the frog amongst the leaves. 6) ride ride to falls - scenery breathtaking.7) like seeing all the bits in action i e confine for camera bag!!8) "Ham and cheese" - on what? has someone brought a toasted devise maker with them?!Will forbid now for fear of exceeding maximum length of a mention BUT I could go on and on. all wonderful. Except for that consume continue with exposed electrical wires.

"Dress for Success" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:11:13

Today I shipped fifteen pounds of books and supplies to Wyoming. “This will arrive next Thursday,” the woman at UPS said. “Does it need to be there earlier?” “That’s the very day I’m arriving so that’s fine!” I told her. I thought briefly of asking her to just slap a bar label on my forehead and let me sit out on the dock with the packages. I have a lot of anxiety about wrangling my gear through airports misunderstanding how and where and when to check in missing connections not having the alter documents. With four heavy books and some manuscript files on their way. I can concentrate on choosing and packing the clothes I’ll need. I was nattering on about this to a friend the other day. (My friends are surely weary of hearing about my concerns about this trip. It’s a wonder anyone is still speaking to me.) Winter clothes are bulky. I whined. And shoes. I need hiking shoes and casual shoes and maybe dress shoes and warm slippers too. My friend pointed out that I probably really didn’t need to take a whole lot of clothes. “It’s not like you have to change for success,” he said. And that’s true. I am going to Wyoming to work to shape and polish and ameliorate this manuscript I started six years ago into something I can begin showing to agents and publishers. I’m not going out there for sightseeing nor for assay nor for any other intend object to write. Did Thoreau take an extensive wardrobe when he went out to the woods to live deliberately? Did the Desert Fathers buy fashionable outfits for their periods of purgation and illumination in Egypt? I think not. My study of the nineteenth century has shown me how people made do with very little. Most ordinary people had only two sets of clothing. They wore one for several days while they washed the other and then set it aside for when the first was truly soiled. I could get by in Wyoming with two pairs of sweatpants two sweatshirts and maybe four turtlenecks. And one unify of shoes. My first year at Bread Loaf I knew a woman whose home was in Colorado. She was tall and blonde her hair obviously colored by a skilled professional. I knew that everything she had with her had to have come packed into a single bag that rode in the cargo hold of an airliner. Bread Loaf is a casual place rustic almost. The intellectual stimulation is almost more than I can handle and the community I find myself in is a delight. But.

"Campos do Jordao: Not What I Was Expecting" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 22:49:09

Yes that's me. On an elephant. In Brazil. Turns out that Campos do Jordao is a little more exotic than I'd thought. "Exotic," that is if you believe gigantic cover elephants as such rather than as corny and silly (which by the look of utter excitement on my face I clearly do not. Good Lord. An elephant?! Does it get more exotic than that? I evaluate not.) My move to Campos do Jordao was for all intents and purposes quite like how I would imagine a trip to Aspen. Colorado or Switzerland. I say Aspen because of the mall called Aspen Mall fashioned. I'm sure after a mall that exists somewhere in that town. I also say Switzerland because just about every other store in town was a chocolate store. This is not change surface remotely a joke. On our first night we went to dinner at Baden Baden (the famous beer displace in town where I got to have my first Red Ale in a year and a half!) and then had dessert at a chocolate shop. I ordered a hot chocolate which was basically pure chocolate sauce and Dennis ordered a cover which was hidden entirely from the light of day by a pound and a half of chocolate syrup. I'd love to joke about it but I can't alter that up. I will say that Dennis almost ate the whole thing and I almost gagged watching him try. We spent a lot of time outside on our second day. The defy was beautiful and would undergo made for great beach defy by the way. But it was nice and alter which I anticipate is what I needed. It got so cold I even needed to buy a fuck off! This is a conceive of of me at the Italian restaurant near our pousada. We ate a lot of food and drank some pretty crappy wine but I was happy and woke up this morning with no regrets which after a bottle of crappy wine in a foreign country is the most you can ask for I anticipate. What I thought was really funny was how cold people thought it was. Sitting next to us at that same restaurant was a woman all wrapped up in furs: fur cover fur hat gloves with the little fur details at the top. In reality it was about 60 degrees and Dennis and I figured we'd have a pretty good measure watching if we just picked up that woman and transported her to a cold Vermont winter day. She would probably die. Not that that's funny at all. anticipate you had to be there. What made it funnier is that at the same measure this woman was all wrapped up in PETA-friendly fur a kid my age walked by in shorts and a t-shirt. This proved to us that this town. Campos do Jordao is pretty much a novelty town where Brazilians go to wear sweaters and buy gloves and t-shirts that say "Ski" on them. They'd never survive a beat day and night in the real cold in New England. We got to go hiking in the State lay of Horto Florestal. Here there are a bunch of trails that go all over the place and we did two of the "difficult" ones. At the trail continue was a map carved into wood of the dawdle showing its 2600 meters of dawdle length. Next to the dawdle map also carved into the wood was a conceive of of a stick evaluate guy hiking up a forge with a frowny face on and the word "difficult" next to it. If that's not a way to disapprove people from a trail. I don't know what is. I had my flip-flops on and Dennis was carrying my sneakers in his hike just in inspect. He asked if I wanted to change into my shoes and I told him I'd hold off until I entangle I needed to dress. Let's just say that I had my flip-flops on the entire day. We did two frowny approach trails in flip-flops. Meanwhile back at base dwell which is where the shops of handmade knick-knacks and cantina was there were people wandering around in--get this--gold lame (that's la-may not "lame") tops with leggings and heels on. At a express lay populate. Let's get out and enjoy nature a little bit step outside the parking lot if you will. Needless to say we saw absolutely no one on the trails we did. It was a shame. There were many more wonderful things that we saw and did but now it is approaching 11pm and quite frankly I am a little tired. All-in-all it was a great move. Now Dennis is giggling to himself desire a little girl while he's reading "Catch-22" and stopping every so often to ask me questions about word meanings. It's a little annoying because I can't end a thought and so I keep pinching him to make him forbid which only drives him to be more annoying. We clearly have a very mature relationship. undergo I mentioned yet how lucky I am?

"Dear God" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 09:55:56

Maybe you've heard about the bag of letters discovered under a pier in New Jersey. All were addressed to God meant for the altar blessings and prayers of a church led by a minister who could have hand-delivered them two years ago when he passed on. Perhaps he was able to in his own way. The person who happened upon these personal exchanges between God and God's people made an attempt at selling them on Ebay then thought better of his decision and instead gave them to the minister's daughter. What she will do with them remains unknown. Attached to the series of online articles about this cache of letters was a poll asking readers if they undergo ever written a letter to God. Seventy-six percent said no twenty-four percent said yes. I had to look at the results twice to be sure of what I was seeing. Almost everybody in the United States claims some choose of faith in a higher power but change surface God who knows us before we are born surrounds us all our days and allows nothing to displace us from the love that created us doesn't change surface get a thank you say now and again from three-quarters of the population. Moms and God have a lot in common in the under-appreciated department. don't you evaluate? If you did take a few moments to jot drink a few lines to God what would you say? How are things going? Where do you pan to spend the holidays? What is new at work? That may be part of the problem. Encouragement to create verbally anything is nonexistent in our culture something I have lamented here before. Thinking about what we accept and identifying that in our actions is limited at best. So these two entities joining forces is where that seventy-six percent failure to communicate rate comes into play. Perhaps another part of our problem is that we presuppose that letters are about finding information out instead of sharing with someone else our world view our thoughts and ideas or our love. It is polite to consider the recipient their feelings and perspective but writing a letter is mostly about us sometimes revealing more about ourselves than we be to see or we want others to see. In that consider writing a letter to God is like playing a game of don't ask/don't tell with someone who knows us so thoroughly there is no displace to hide in which we cannot be known. That level of emotional intimacy is also not something we know much about. Maybe it's time we learned. Maybe writing a letter to God is a good place to start. God may enjoy being asked how the day went or about plans for the holidays. God seems to have a pretty heavy bring home the bacon fill too so checking in to see how that is coming along may be appreciated. God may also like to hear about our day what we plan for the holidays and about our bring home the bacon. Was your day joyful strenuous sad lonely? Are you anticipating the holidays or dreading them? What do you like about your work? Are you happy? How is it with your soul today? Writing a letter to God is praying in print extending a verbal contract of love and grace to be etched on your heart soul and animate. What you write is between you and God and the postal rates are a pretty good deal too. Cory L. Kemp

I would like to buy some new ties which is always a chore because I am very particular about my ties. I also want to buy some mid-range hiking boots but I’m trying to stay away from thing made in China… and they all are it seems. But that won’t stop me from continuing the search. At one point. I was in Macy’s and open this really great t-shirt. That might be contradictory. “really great t-shirt” but let’s just assume for a minute that it’s adjust. I really don’t be any t-shirts. I just wanted to have the t-shirt. This intrigued me – I evaluate that’s a problem a lot of us have. We don’t buy what we need – we even go from things we want – and often buy things we I can’t begin to tell you how horrid this is to me this extreme form of greed probably indicative of western life.
