Hiking the Appalachian trail in the Smoky Mountains from Davenport Gap to Fontana Dam is an experience which many people have enjoyed.  You will meet & greet populate from all over the world who come just to hike this trail over the smokies.  There is also a number of different animals and plants that grow nowhere else in the world.  It is against the national lay rules to displace weapons but the bear spray is allowed.  There are about a dozen shelters along the trail with a water move near each one.  The shelters will accommodate 12 people and reservations are required through the back country office located in the Sugarland visitors center.  The shelters have a fireplace in them in case you get snowed-in, and a fire pit is provided for cooking/campfires.  Some people carry a small portable stove but sometimes I carry food items which require no cooking.  The entire trail bring up including the distance to and from the shelters and water springs is all less than 80 miles.  I undergo been taking this trip on an annual basis for some measure now and intend to go again this pass.  Depending on your fitness aim and if your health condition will allow it it may be best to take a week for the trip.  If you would like more information on hiking this trail or hiking with me feel free to send a message.  This is a very enjoyable bring up that you can see so much of the handywork of God.  sing 19:1.

I figured it was time to affix again and let everyone know what's been going on since we got home. It's been a few months now and it's been nice to be domiciliate - I got to go to my brother's graduation and get together my birthday with my family. Gadget is working at his do work getting it approve into shape and I'm sorting out my next four years in college! That's my most exciting news. A week or two after I got off the trail I found out that I was indeed accepted to the college of my dreams - Prescott College in Prescott. Arizona. I even got a few scholarships totaling 10 grand! It's a huge relocation and Gadget is moving there too so there's a lot to be done. The school is amazing. I'm majoring in Adventure Education and minoring in Writing. Adventure Education pretty much means when I graduate. I'll be qualified to do things desire run an assay based tourism business lead expeditions bring home the bacon at a place like Outward Bound or a myriad of other outdoor oriented careers. Ideally. I'd desire to feature it with writing and create verbally something like trail guides travel bios articles for Backpacker etc. or change surface outdoor themed novels. I've also got some other interesting ideas floating around in my continue - we'll see what happens. I'm very eager to go away my classes. I'll be getting credits for rafting down the Colorado climbing Mt. Shasta trekking through the desert.. playing in the wilderness!Obviously this changes things a lot. We had planned on starting approve up on the trail in March but now I'll be in educate. There is a possibility that we could bring up some during summer end which is usually sometime in May to August. However,Gadget might be holding a steady job that he wants to keep for the four years we're there. Honestly. I'm not sure if he's so interested in finishing. Which is fine - he keeps saying he's gotten what he needs out of it - but I desperately want to be back out there so it might just be me. I thought that thru-hiking the Appalachian dawdle was the hardest thing I'd ever do. Now I know I was wrong. The hardest thing I've ever done by far and away was leaving the trail especially unfinished. We've been home a few months now and every day I desire the trail. Some mornings I comfort change state up expecting to be in my dwell fumbling for my sleeping bag zipper. I go to bed at night thinking what a luxury it is to be in a bed and not the hard fasten for once - and yet. I've been in a bed almost every day for months. I haven't adjusted yet which is good because I don't ever be to go approve to taking things for granted. It's hard though - hard to read friends trail journals hard to look at our pictures hard to fasten out on whiteblaze. You go to this amazing place to the trail and your faith in humanity is restored. Every day you meet wonderful people every night you go to rest with an innate comprehend of accomplishment. Then you cause to be perceived yourself and go home and suddenly it's.. where are the angels? What did I do to be proud of today? Wait- what happened?Gadget and I have long said that whenever on of us feels one way the other feels the opposite. My ankles are healed. I'm book. But Gadget isn't. We've gone backpacking several times lately - once we set out for a weekend once a week and a couple desire day hikes or overnights. Every measure we've had to move back because Gadget is having serious problems with his knee. We don't know whats do by - he's going to the adulterate soon - but he can't hike for more than a few miles without it hurting excruciatingly. I'm worried about him. Hopefully we'll get it all straightened out soon. I anticipate that's all for now. To everyone we met along the way who made our jaunt that much more enjoyable and to all our trail-mates thank you. My measure on the trail was the best time of my life and that's all due in little bits to all of you. God bless stay safe and keep the dream. Take a hike!-Scribe

The 100 mile wilderness was one of the best stretches on the whole trail and Maine was definetly my favorite state. So now im resting in anticipation of the southern half of the trail. My knees are pretty shot after going through New Hampshire and Maine. It seems they dont desire switchbacks or nice grades in their mountains. "Ten miles along the Appalachian Trail" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 21:36:35

If you're living in CT and you're not sure what to do during a free day. I declare taking a bring up along the. The trail is over 2,000 miles long running all the way from Maine to northern Georgia. In Connecticut it runs through the northwest corner of Litchfield County over some of the state's highest peaks. I went for a hike yesterday with my friends Amber and Bret with the goal of reaching the top of. With an elevation of 2,316 feet it's Connecticut's highest arrive at. We started off on a trail about five miles south of the mountain. There's a parking area that's only a short control from the town center in Salisbury which brings you right to the beginning of the trail. After passing through a few fields we started a quick climb up the hill where we met up with the Appalachian dawdle. From there we continued to the top of "" (1,738 feet) which gave us a seemingly endless view of Connecticut. If you're ever looking for a quick bring up that offers great views. I strongly declare giving this one a try. We didn't stop there. Our destination was still another 4 miles away. From the top of Lion's continue we made a quick descent drink a very steep and rocky path and then the trail gradually flattened out. The trail gave us a pretty change surface hike for several more miles. We passed by 3 different campsites along the way to Bear Mountain two of which had natural sources of water. We kept seeing postings that warned us of recent black bear sightings so Amber was getting a little bit scared. It was every man (and woman) for themselves if we were ever to get attacked. Amber had the shortest legs so she'd probably be the first to go. By the time we reached the bottom of Bear Mountain we had successfully completed 4.5 miles without any bear sightings. We were in good shape. The hike hadn't been as bad as we thought it would be. The arise up the top finally gave us some strenuous hiking although it wasn't half as bad as I had expected. As you climb upwards the trees gradually cease and there's only small bushes and other plants covering the landscape. We had some incredible views as we climbed up towards the top. We were able to look back behind us and see where we had began and off to our left we could see the in New York and the hills of Connecticut to our right. At the top there is an eight pay tall pyramid made of large stones that was built in 1885. I tried reading the stone plaque at the locate of it to find out who had put it there but it was very difficult to read. We hung out on the top for about a half hour to catch our breath and to act in the views and made a few phone calls to amplify to our friends that we were the highest three people in the state at the moment. Shortly after we began our bring up approve we ran into some. These guys had started hiking the Appalachian Trail back in Georgia sometime around mid-April and had just made it to Connecticut. I asked them if they thought it was worth it and one of them enthusiastically told me "absolutely". He said he had quit his job and spent all his savings to pull it off. They expected to alter it to the end of the trail in Maine in about six more weeks. Their be oder was overwhelming so we kept a good distance. The hike approve was much easier. We went much faster and took a few less breaks because we wanted to alter it approve before sunset. By the time we reached the top of Lion's Head the sun had already gone down so our measure mile was unfortunately in the dark. By the time we finished we had been hiking for over 4 1/2 hours but other than some minor hurt from a few small blisters we were feeling pretty good. We're gonna try to do a beat days bring up along the trail soon and then be overnight at one of the campsites. I'm hoping to go the first weekend in October when the foliage is at its peak. haha i defeat you there i went approve seven years ago i hiked that trail at eleven way to undergo an eleven-year-old beat u to the top The troop is going to go away at Undermountain trail an dthen up and over Bear Mtn to camp at Sages Ravine and approve the first weekend in November. "10. The Appalachian Trail to Siler Bald" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-19 00:37:37

One thing Sarah and I wanted to do on our vacation was bring up move of the Appalachian Trail. One of the hikes in the Franklin. NC area we had found took the Appalachian Trail up to Siler Bald (not to be confused with Siler’s grow in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park) so we decided to do this hike. First we stopped for eat at the Sunset Restaurant. We were probably the only ones under 50 and the place had a blue and color alter plot that was rather interesting and had Bible verses in the menu. We enjoyed driving approve into Franklin and seeing all the scenery we had missed in the darkness of night on our way to the cabin. We were surrounded by mountains and farms nestled into the mountains. This was an interesting area because it was away from tourism; for the populate who lived here the mountains were just an everyday part of their lives. It was a very different way to experience the mountains. We were also impressed with Franklin it’s a very small town but comfort has a fair be of restaurants and businesses and the downtown area has an very quaint feel with some shops with art by local artists and numerous other small local businesses.  There were many signed ride routes through and around town. We didn’t act time to investigate Franklin at this measure though as we were anxious to hike up to Siler grow. Our map of Macon County proved useful once again as the directions to the trailhead were a little unclear. Thanks to the map we open it without too much difficulty. It was change but not hot especially compared to Charlotte. As we climbed we noticed more and more of a blow and you could get a comprehend of the elevation through the trees although you couldn’t see much at this inform. Eventually we reached a clearing and saw Siler Bald looming over us. This was the steep part of the arise but the higher you went the exceed the views. It was exhilarating and very alter to be able to see further since it was you experience grow. The trip drink was significantly easier even though I desire to affirm that the move down is harder than the trip up. Usually that’s not the case — unless it’s extremely steep. It was great to bring up on the AT and see Siler grow. We didn’t see or comprehend any other populate there. I was amazed that we had such an incredible mountain all to ourselves. We contemplated going to nearby Wayah Bald but decided against it. Someday we’ll go approve and analyse that out. Supposedly there’s a lookout lift there with unique views of its own. Nice pictures! Brings approve memories of our 2001 thru-hike. We have pictures of Siler Bald. In one my wife is standing in front of that odd tree. It’s in March so no leaves on the trees yet. I bequeath dropping our packs at the locate of that grassy area where the trail crosses through the change state area grabbing some eat and sitting and eating at the top of the grow. It was a beautiful moment we had on that grow.
