"Discover Acadia National Park in the Fall" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-16 05:39:58

Acadia National Park is the only national park in New England and was the first one established east of the Mississippi. In the summer months it attracts visitors like a magnet. But by fall quiet space is easier to find especially if youre prepared to camp and hike in the park. Its a special place on Americas Atlantic coast and famous for its rocky and breathtaking coastal terrain. The park is home to more than 500 species of plants. 300 species of birds and the tallest mountain at 1,530 feet on the east coast of U. S. The park is largely located on Mount Desert Island which is south of Ellsworth. Maine. Acadia covers 46,000 acres and includes 120 miles of hiking trails and an extensive 45-mile network of carriage paths popular for mountain biking. The paths were created during 1913 and 1940 by John Rockefeller. Jr. Peak foliage in the area is generally around early to mid-October and camping is restricted to Blackwoods campground after September. But the park has many trails and a number can be combined to create longer excursions and climbs for hikers of all ability. Just allow enough time to return to Blackwoods campground for your overnight stays as backcountry camping is not allowed in the park. Moderate ability trails include: the 4.4 miles Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail with open views of Bar Harbor and Frenchman Bay. Champlain Mountain at 2.2 miles and the 3.3 mile loop of the scenic Jordan Pond Shore Trail. Three of the more popular trails for strenuous hikes are the Precipice Trail. Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail and Acadia Mountain Trail. The Precipice Trail is very steep as it ascends 1,000 feet almost vertically and includes climbing ladders on exposed cliffs. Its the most challenging of all the trails in the park but an exhilarating climb if youve a head for heights. The Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail starts close to the campground and is a 7.4 mile roundtrip hike through forests and to the summit with marvelous scenic views at the top. The Acadia Mountain Trail is on the opposite side of Sommes Sound and offers stunning views of the Sound and Southwest Harbor. Mountain cyclists can marvel and enjoy the impressive broken-stone carriage roads located east of Sommes Sound in the Jordans Pond and Eagle Lake areas. These roads are also a wonderful way of seeing the park for hikers and those wanting easy scenic walk trails. Trail maps and park information can be picked up at Hulls Cove Visitor Center located on Route 3 and open from May thru October. For more information on Acadia National Park and reservations at the campgrounds visit www nps gov/acad For more details on other destinations and attractions in New England and to pick up your free travel and vacation reports go to Cliff Calderwoods site at:

"Thanksgiving in Florida" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:34:41

Oddly enough we do undergo a bit of fall foliage here in North Florida. You just undergo to get out of the city and control through the country to see it. Which is what I did today driving to my sister's house for the Thanksgiving meal. Since she lives on the north side of town and I live on the far east it wasn't difficult to do. Took forty minutes but the drive was glorious. The rain had stopped a little color was peaking through and I got to see the glorious yellows of the hickories and pecans and birches the rusts of the sycamores and dogwoods and oaks. One house had a good sized Japanese maple that looked on fire it was so red. I was the last one there my daughter was there with her roomate from Vermont my sister and her preserve and daughter and my brother-in-law's parents. Bill's dad was especially thankfull to be here this year; he was in a motorcycle accident this past March and it's been a desire road approve of recovery for him. Imagine - 74 and comfort riding a motorcycle! He was going to keep doing it too that is until today - when he saw what his wrecked bike looked desire for the first time. Then he decided - might be best to let that lay. The food was glorious juicy turkey and cranberry sauce cornbread stuffing and gravy chicken and dumplings sweet potato souffle turnip greens color hit casserole cheesy spinach casserole pecan pie blueberry pie and turkey cupcakes my neice made. She said she didn't put turkey meat in them they were just made to be like turkeys. You know I had to ask. Of cover once we sat down to eat it was "try to scare the Yankee" measure. It was pretty easy to do too as my daughter's roomate is gay and a very picky eater and didn't put anything on his plate that wasn't white - turkey stuffing gravy and color bean casserole. So we jazzed him about trying the greens trying the sweet potatoes. He wouldn't comprehend of it - said he'd tried them before - "but were they made by REAL SOUTHERNERS?" heheh. Then we teased him about eating squirrel dove and quail possum and racoon and how some populate even eat armadillo. We had to forbid when it looked desire he was going to act off running. Of cover after the meal we had to have our traditional Thanksgiving reparte with my brother-in-law threatening to tickle my daughter until she cried my daughter egging her cousin to ask her daddy for a pony more talk of motorcycles and sailboats and flying and how Thanksgiving was when my Mom & Dad were alive and whether or not we were going to see a movie tonight or go shopping tomorrow. After we crashed on the sofas for awhile we had to stop in to see my neice's baby guinea pig go outside and play with the cats be in on the tree frog that lives underneath the cover of the hot tub and go pick satsumas. Satsumas are a lot desire oranges but they're much easier to peel and section off. It's a family tradition to grow satsumas as this is about as far north as they will grow and my sister has a nice big tree. And there's a bumper crop this year - the channelise was so heavy laden with fruit the branches were bent down. So my daughter's roomate and I went out to pick some actually I cut them off and Corey held the cover bag. You don't pull the oranges off that will disunite the stem taking some of the peel and the fruit gets bad quicker. I tried to talk him into picking some himself just so he could say he picked oranges in Florida but he said he was happy with just being able to say he HELPED picked oranges in Florida. I remember being a little girl and going to my grandparent's house in the country and picking satsumas even then. Forty years of picking satsumas on Thanksgiving. Only in Florida.

"Let?s Plant Potatoes in the Garden" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:56:48

By Kathy Anderson Potatoes taters spudscall them what you will potatoes are a staple in the fast of many people all over the planet. Potatoes are a nutritious versatile vegetable and theyre incredibly easy to grow. But before you run out to the garden with your shovel and hoe there are a few things you should experience about planting potatoes. You may have heard old timers say that potatoes should always be planted on Good Friday. This old wives tale is absolutely absurd. Good Friday does not fall on the same calendar date each year and can fall anywhere from early walk to mid April. If folks in New England or the upper Midwest tried to plant potatoes on Good Friday many years theyd be digging through rock-hard soil that was still frozen solid. Do not lay potatoes too early while the ground is comfort icy. If the ground is too cold and wet the seed potatoes will delay sprouting until the growing conditions are more favorable. This is usually in early March to late April depending on the climate. Potatoes do tolerate cool soil and a light frost but not much growth will take place until the soil warms up a bit. You wont find potato seedlings or packets of potato seeds for sale at your local tend center. Instead potatoes are grown from seed potatoes. A seed potato is nothing more than an ordinary potato with at least one eye. approve in the day before supermarkets when gardens supplied most of the food put on the table the last of the potatoes in the storage bin come spring were used for seed potatoes. Wise gardeners set aside their blemish-free healthiest potatoes for seed. Seed potatoes can be planted whole or they may be cut into pieces with at least one eye per piece. Seed potatoes with more eyes will grow to produce a larger quantity of potatoes but the potatoes will generally be smaller. Seed potatoes with fewer eyes will produce fewer potatoes but those potatoes will tend to be larger. If you choose to cut your disgorge potatoes into smaller pieces change integrity them a day prior to planting. This allows the cuts to heal over slightly which helps to prevent soil-borne diseases from infecting your potato cut. Always choose seed potatoes that are free from blemishes. Plant your whole or cut disgorge potatoes two to three inches deep in good rich soil. Rows of potatoes should be about three feet apart and the potatoes within the row should be planted twelve inches apart. If your potato cut has suffered from heal in the past toss a small handful of dry pine needles in the holes.

Cape Cod the express's hooked peninsula is one of its biggest tourist destinations with extensive beaches and historic towns plus two big tourist friendly islands. Further along the glide gets more rugged and has fewer tourists; try the beautiful Pemaquid Peninsula. Monhegan Island for pleasant walking and superb views. Camden for sailors and the Acadia National Park for excellent scenery to bring up and bike through. Inland Wilderness [for rafting] the main outdoor attractions are hiking in the Baxter express lay excellent rafting in the Kennebec River and hiking and skiing around the popular town of Bethel.
