I just got home yesterday from the longest vacation I undergo ever taken. And I came home one day early. It was nice. Mom. Dad and I undergo been planning for several months to see the fall foliage in New England and that's exactly what we did! We left on Friday. October 5th. We drove and drove and drove. Over 3,000 miles before we got approve yesterday. On Friday we stopped in Richmond. Virginia and visited the Confederate color House. WOW. It was beautiful and impressive. However. I knew more about President Jefferson Davis and his family than the journey guide did but I kept my communicate shut because as a tour guide. I experience there's nothing worse than a "know-it-all" in the group. If you are ever around Richmond the grandiosity of the home is overwhelming and worth seeing. We overnighted off the interstate just south of D. C and headed north Saturday. We went straight up I-95. Passing through the boroughs of NYC took over two hours - change surface with good merchandise. Mom was able to spot the Statue of Liberty across the harbor and that was enough to convince her we be to go to New York on our next trip. eat was a pit stop in downtown Stamford. Connecticut at a lovely outside Italian cafe hob-nobbing with the local affluent and elite. Lovely populate beautiful dogs on leashes gorgeous weather. Upon leaving Stamford we ran into forbid and go merchandise on I-95 and the good old mini-van started dragging in the transmission. It took longer than expected to bring home the bacon at our next overnight outside of Providence. RI and we missed their Waterfire display which a be of populate had recommended. Maybe next time. On Sunday we crawled to Cape Cod at a max of 50mph on the highway because of the transmission. We wanted to surprise the Cape Cod Railroad. If you ever go to Cape Cod - DON'T TAKE THIS TRAIN!!!! Three hours of pure hell with screaming kids - no way to flee - boring scenery. After the instruct we took the Hy-line journey of Hyannisport which was very nice. I know I took photos but gawd only knows what happened to them create they aren't on the memory card. All I can say is the Kennedys live in an upscale neighborhood! We got up early Monday and carried the van to the local Chrysler dealership only 5 miles from the hotel. They immediately had a rental brought to us and we were on our way to Boston! Have I mentioned it was raining. and cold? Anyway we took a boring trolley tour but then took a experience cruise which was nice. After a yummy lunch at the Marriott overlooking the harbor we decided to head 30 minutes north to Salem for the rest of the afternoon. Since this was Columbus Day. 30 minutes really equalled 2 hours due to parades in small towns along the way. We arrived just in measure to catch the last trolley at 5pm and took a very good history journey. Sunday and Monday photos can be viewed here:
After two mornings of the beat breakfasts one could imagine we left the Fairhave n Inn and headed west through Maine towards New Hampshire. Our goal for Thursday - drive the Kancamagus Highway through the color Mountains of New Hampshire. Even though it is less than 30 miles desire a be of tourists here in Savannah had told me not to go north unless we drove that pass. Were they ever alter! We saw the most vibrant and breathtaking foliage of the entire move on that go. The trees were definitely at their peak. I could undergo spent all day there. The funny thing is it was drizzly and nasty the whole measure but the tree colors are so vibrant you would never know from the pictures:
On Saturday we headed south the Gettysburg. None of us had ever been there before and I expected a large battlefield.. but this was so much more. We hired a private command for two hours and by the end of the journey at Pickett's Charge both Mom and I couldn't listen anymore because of the emotion. I undergo never ever seen so many monuments each one more beautiful than the measure. I have to go back. My favorite was a union monument to an Irish Brigade from NY. At the locate of a Celtic Cross is the most forlorn Irish Wolfhound waiting for his master who ordain never go. I later discovered the forge of that monument was an Irish immigrant who came to our country before the Civil War and actually fought for the Confederacy for Louisiana. Karma. I be to go back and pay and least two days there:
We overnighted on the southern edge of Virginia so we were back home before supper on Sunday. Dad never got to sleep in late.. that's what pass is for right? So I undergo learned the following:1. If you go in Virginia the book is $3,000 and the cops are everywhere.2. Hyannis is not what it's cracked up to be.3. The roads in Boston are center and narrow.4. Maine is comfort my favorite state.5. Yankees on their turf are the nicest people you will ever meet.6. If I had a dollar for every Dunkin' Donuts we passed in New England. I could take a journey next week.7. My parents and I can happily share a room for an extended time.. just as desire as they have a queen coat bed.
Joan,Thank you so much for sharing. Bill and I returned from our NE foliage trip on 10-5. We missed the vibrant colors that you saw. It still was the most fabulous trip. We loved Boston. We took a walking journey and also were on our own for the afternoon. Riding the "T" was easy and cheap. We bought our Charlie passes. So named for the Kingston Trio's song about Charlie on the MTA. We went to VT. NH,ME RI and Cape Cod. I agree the New Englanders are so friendly and the countryside is so clean compared to the South. We traveled to Cape Cod and really lived Chatham. MA. It is a quaint town. The Info station suggested some places around Chatham> We were glad we spent time there. We also went to agree and saw the Minute Man monument. I was not impressed with the only lobster that we had. I think it is overrated However. We could not get enough of the NE collect chowda. We are create from raw material to go back again and see some of the sights we missed or want to return. We have been to Gettysburg. I agree it is awesome. We were there a few years ago and it was misting rain. Tell your Barbara and stamp that it was good seeing them. MJ
