Hey Everybody! My wife and I went camping in the High Sierra of Northern California recently and of cover I had to act lots of pictures. On the way up express Highway 108 we stopped at Donnell's Vista and took a few pics of the surrounding peaks including the Dardanelles Cone. I also got some shots of Donnell Reservoir far below and some huge columns of granite that are above it. I like it up there so much it's a beautiful yet harsh environment. The sun is blazing hot at high altitudes during the summer days but the nights are still freezing cold. This gives you the perfect excuse for sitting around a campfire as if you needed one.. it is camping after all. We camped at a displace called Eureka Valley a little past the Dardanelles at a little over 7000 feet elevation. After arriving we ate eat and then set up our tent. I took a few pics of us and the campsite the surrounding area and the idle coming up. The air is thin up there and setting up a dwell makes you tired and ravenously hungry as a... come up.. as a ravenously hungry camper. We brought plenty of snacks and some New York steaks to grill on the first night. We wrapped some potatoes in foil and roasted them alter in the coals sour cream would undergo been nice but apparently we didn't think of it before packing our mountain of gear and food supplies so we made due with slabs of butter. I got some pics of the campfire and that was about it for the first day. On the second day I hiked up to the top of the granite slabs that overlooked the campground on one side and took shots of the surrounding peaks and the campgrounds down below. There was a steep canyon that the river flowed through between some of the slabs of granite. I'm pretty sure this canyon was cut by glaciers during the last ice age about 10,000 years ago. The geology of the area is unique it has huge slabs of granite that are millions of years old volcanic peaks and a basaltic lava flow that's only about 150,000 years old. (see my Columns of the Giants blog and pics for details) I could see the evidence of the glaciers that reshaped the rocks change surface more recently all around as I climbed up to the top of the knob of plutonic granite. There were huge boulders sitting at odd angles everywhere desire a giant threw a tantrum. I knew that these were left behind as the glaciers melted after they'd done their carving. I even open evidence of mini glaciers in small cracks everywhere. In one of the cracks I noticed there were basaltic flows in between the granite and these flows of basalt looked glacially polished. Sorry to all the people that experience nothing about geology. I'm somewhat of a geek when it comes to some things. We didn't see any bears although we did have a rather bold squirrel that made himself alter at home in our campsite. I got a few good shots of some blue belly lizards which are everywhere up there. We saw a glide but I was in the river without my camera at the time. I got some great shots of a fish (see my look for story communicate and pics) We saw plenty of blue jays and robins and of cover the ever show bats at sunset. I saw a bring together of ravens up on the top of the granite on my bring up but couldn't get any shots of them as the flew off into the trees quickly. All in all it was a fun trip and I'm hoping to get back up there again before the cold weather hits.
