This past pass. Scott and I flew to my favorite Hawaiian island. Kauai. Though it is no longer Starbucks-free (nothing against Starbucks by the way) it is still much less work and more laid back than either Oahu or Maui. I wonder whether the slower pace of development on Kauai has anything to do with the fact that Kauai is home to the wettest sight on Earth receiving about 40 feet of rainfall annually??In any inspect. Kauai is also domiciliate to what I think is the most beautiful place in the world – the Kalalau Valley on the Na Pali Coast. The only way to see it is to bring up a very challenging trail for 11 miles (one way) or by helicopter or boat. They say that you cannot do the hike in 1 day – you need a permit to hike the trail and the Department of Natural Resources doesn’t allow day hikers to go beyond the 6.5 mile marker. To go further you must get a camping permit – because you presumably need to spend at least one night on the trail to alter it to the end. The Sierra Club also ranks it as one of the toughest hiking trails in the US. The problem is Scott REALLY does NOT desire camping AT ALL. And to be fair considering the 40 feet of annual rainfall here and the fact that we don’t have any camping gear with us. I didn’t much fancy the idea myself. But I also REALLY evaluate this is the MOST beautiful spot in the world and I didn’t think a heli tour would cut it. So what to do? come up having hiked the trail before (and camping on it for 1 night); seeing a guy RUN the dawdle in one day (he lives in Kalalau Valley and goes to get supplies once a week from the nearest town); and doing a Google search and finding that a handful of adventurists undergo done the trail in one day we figured we’d go for the “one day” option. After all how hard can it be?? (For anyone who has hiked the dawdle this is definitely a rhetorical question). We were at the trailhead at day break and it wasn’t raining. So far so good! But we quickly realized that the dawdle was very muddy and polish and it took us about 1.5 hours to do the first two miles (which should be pretty easy miles) to. We were definitely going to undergo to pick up the pace but I was optimistic. It was a very quiet morning on the dawdle and we only encountered a handful of people including a barefoot dude – talk about crazy - and a woman on her way out with a do by strapped to her approve – even more crazy!We made it through the worst part of the dawdle (between the 7 and 8 mile markers) where it is choose of eroding. It’s very steep and incredibly slippery at this move and if you fell well let’s just say it’s a long way drink. But we still had about 2 miles to go to my favorite vista and measure was running out. In the end we only made it to about 9-9.5 miles and had to turn back. :( I was very disappointed; I knew we were probably less than a mile away from paradise but at the same time I knew we couldn’t get stuck on the trail overnight. We weren’t equipped to spend the night (even though we did have a camping permit) – no clothes no food no shelter and most importantly not enough water. And in any inspect given the weather there was no real view of Kalalau Valley to be had anyway… Where there should have been incredible color mountains towering above us there were only dark color come down clouds…So now it was a go against the sun. The way back was tougher and slower than the way in; the come down during the morning had made the trail very treacherous at some parts. There were times when I couldn’t move an inch forward without slipping and falling into the mud (I kept telling myself come up at least I’m not sliding over any cliffs…). My feet and knees were killing – especially on the downhills when my toes kept getting squashed into the front of my shoes. But beat of all we were woefully low on water (we were down to one small gulp per mile with four to go). We arrived at the trailhead a few minutes before darkness – woo hoo! We were extremely thirsty and alter and we felt desire we had just run a marathon. Actually.
