"PEAK FOLIAGE AT MY HOUSE" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-16 05:40:06

I know I really shouldn’t complain about this but what’s up with the trees around here? I mean it is the middle of November already! Usually by this point Central Ohio looks very wintery with stick trees all over the landscape. We fully expect to see stick trees from mid-October until sometime in April. It’s rather a depressing sight actually. But this year we have color in mid-November. As someone who suffers with seasonal affective disorder. I’m not complaining. The colorful leaves are beautiful even on yet another grey cloudy day. Yeah we’ve got the same thing here too. The leaves are really just starting to seriously fall right now and the weather today is in the 50’s. Usually we’ve had at least one snowfall by now but nothing so far this year. I just hope we have time to get the leaves up off the ground before the snow does hit… I was just telling Dave yesterday that by the time the leaves fall it’ll be too cold outside to actually go out and rake them! But we are LOVING the colors we are getting from our Japanese Maple!! Beautiful! We still have very colorful leaves here too and we are usually bare twigs by this time. Let’s enjoy it while we can! That is gorgeous. Here in the South. I actually noticed the leaves have started changing color here. Usually they just fall off. No color. It was such an exceptional day! The weather was great and the sun was shining…… a perfect October day. Wait it’s mid-November! There is still color here and there but the leaves are beginning to drop in ernest. We know what’s coming but can appreciate the delay for now. Wow. We’ve got ’stick trees’ from the end of September to the end of April/beginning of May. I can’t imagine having colour into October let alone November!! That red tree/bush/whatever it is (I’m great with botany!) is beautiful! our “burning bushes” just turned red like yesterday usually they’d be bare by now its kinda freakin me out XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <code> <em> <i> <strike> <strong>

As we have noted and presumably most folks have noticed the fall-foliage show this year has been way behind schedule. Typically the peak around here comes between Oct. 21 and Halloween averaging around Oct. 25 says veteran leaf-watcher Paul Meyer who runs the Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill. For parts of the region the peak finally arrived this week and it has been spectacular. Why so late? The beat explanation is the lack of cold nights. Philadelphia did not preserve its first official freezing temperature until after Election Day. Cold clearly has an effect on the leaves but the impresario of the annual show is the waning sunlight. Meyer and other observers undergo noticed no particular turn in recent years of late-arriving peak foliage. In any event try to get out there and savor it as soon as possible. It's only a matter of time wind and gravity before they all go down. Philly com discussions are intended to be civil friendly conversations.
