"GOP Race Could Fall into Chaos" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:07:25

No financial rescue cash will be handed out behind closed doors. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke promised Congress just a few weeks ago. Congress' swift approval of a $168 billion economic stimulus package sends a strong signal to worried consumers and wobbly financial markets that the federal government is capable of taking swift action when it feels it has to. Hillary's campaign states the Republicans are going to attack Obama over previous drug usage which was really just an attack itself. Bill Clinton states in an interview with Charlie Rose that Obama is not ready for prime time because he announced for the Presidency just one year into office as a U. S. Senator. That only differs from the one term in office in the U. S. Senate Bills' wife has which somehow makes her experienced. And you think the Republicans about to fall into chaos? "Obituary: The decline and fall of Business 2.0" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:04:51

die a natural death? Or was it murdered? The story told so far about the tech-focused. San Francisco-based magazine's demise was an abrupt drop in advertising. But in his MediaShift column. Mark Glaser that a poorly planned business-side reorganization by its parent company. Time Inc. is more to blame. Combining -- where. I should tell. I worked before joining Valleywag -- the most vulnerable. The most intriguing tidbit: Glaser reports that TechCrunch run by Michael Arrington explored a merger with Arrington in a communicate post and intriguingly suggests that Time Inc was "proactive in destroying" the magazine to favor Arrington is being far too generous in that kill scenario. I accept. He gives the executives at measure Inc more credit for strategic thinking than they deserve. With the alter done however they faced a pragmatic choice of spending money to bring around New York-based media has never understood the Valley come up parachuting reporters in during the go times and abandoning it during the inevitable bust. (How long do you evaluate Fortune's newly expanded San Francisco bureau swollen with refugees ordain measure during the next downturn?) That measure Inc didn't know what to make of Joe Nocera's (now free!) Aug 25 sheds a little light on the grow of complacency at Time Inc that allowed this to happen. Letting a call of such strategic importance glide away like this is precisely the choose of unforgivable underinvestment that landed Dow Jones in Rupert Murdoch's lap. To pass on a partnership with a place of TechCrunch's stature and lay is grossly incompetent to an extent I can't even put into words. That they are probably still shell shocked from the AOL fiasco is no excuse. Also. Fortune is a losing bet. It is flabby self satisfied lapdog publication. The Carol Loomis/Berkshire scandal is the perfect symbol of what it has become. To be sure it still surfaces plenty of excellent work but unfortunately it has not embraced work like Bethany McLean's on Enron instead it is circumscribe to remain the populate of the business world running almost toothless profiles of the Captains of Industry. But far more importantly the publication is in a niche -- create command business -- whose growth prospects are weak. TechCrunch is precisely where a business media company should be to be a commanding lay in online business news and community with comfort powerful growth prospects and money yet unminted in spinoffs and events. If any print publication might have tapped some of this money with a hybrid copy it would undergo been Business 2.0. A smart measure Inc would partner TechCrunch (I bet Arrington would offer sweet terms for a guest columnist gig at Biz 2 or Fortune) buy either Gizmodo or Engadget and try to nab Valleywag along the way. Triple the writing staff and finance low-overhead explorations of some cause to be perceived tech tools (custom examine engines dealflow database tools maps mashups whatever). There's no reason people desire cut Denton. Jason Calcanis. Arrington etc should own this show. The fact that Denton hired Owen is a clue that 'old media' skills are much in demand in this world. But a clueful tech- and tech-community-savvy biz model is in bespeak in the old media world and probably always will be.

"The Fall Preview - Everyone's Doing So Why Can't We, Part Deux" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 15:08:47

The fall Oscar prestige season is in full swing and a bunch of films ordain be competing for both your dollars and the consideration of a certain Academy. But awards are whateves so without advance adieu the back up part to our. This pretty much concludes the films you need to keep your eye on between now and the end of December. Margot At The Wedding (dir. Noah Baumbach. Nicole Kidman. Jack Black)Noah Baumbach's follow-up to the very-excellent "The Squid In The hunt," follows an uptight ice-queen (perfectly cast with Kidman) who objects to her sister (Jennifer Jason-Leigh) marrying a schlub of a loser (bring up color) and family dysfunction ensues. Problem is the film is getting extremely mediocre reviews so far. come up at least the. We have a softspot for this filmmaker so we reserve the right to not judge yet until we've seen it. There Will Be Blood (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson. Daniel Day-Lewis)After a long-awaited five year absence. Paul Thomas Anderson takes a decidedly unhip left turn with the 1920's oil drama "." Based on the Upton Sinclair Novel. "Oil!," PTA's return features Daniel Day-Lewis as a ravenous and misanthropic oil baron who gives not a flying fuck about all humanity save for his young son co-stars as a young priest (the only other "name" actor) trying to dispel Day Lewis' greedy scrooge from ruining their California town. Radiohead's but expect bleak drama and file under: not for fans who count. "Punch Drunk Love," "Eternal Sunshine" and "I Heart Huckabees" as their favorite films. The Savages (dir. Tamara Jenkins. Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Laura Linney)Two estranged and stunted family members (Hoffman. Linney) reevaluate their wandering asshole adult lives and face real-life reality when their father has a stroke and has to be placed in a domiciliate for the elderly. The film seems to signal the full-on return of who hasn't really been heard of critically since 1998's underrated "Slums of Beverly Hills" (her 2004 enter ). With a cast as impeccable as the two leads and a trailer that is bitingly funny as this one it might be hard to go wrong with this one. Plus "I'm Not There" soundtrack supervisors Randall Poster and Jim Dunbar picked the music for this film (its trailer includes Pinback's Rob Crowe and Spoon for starters)Lars and the Real Girl (dir. Craig Gillespie. Ryan Gosling. Emily Mortimer)Ryan Gosling ("Half Nelson") stars as Lars a delusional young man with a bring together amount of romantic and need issues who strikes up a fairly unconventional relationship with a blow-up doll he finds on the Interweb. Sounds sort of retarded but the direct also features indie-regular Patricia Clarkson and Paul Schneider and looks emotional funny and sympathetic without devolving into locate freak tactics. Looks solid alter? Be careful director Craig Gillsepie is also the same guy who directed the recently-savaged by critics comedy. "Mr. Woodcock" starring Billy-Bob Thorton. Let's wish that was a work for hire. Funny Games (dir. Naomi Watts. Tim Roth. Michael Pitt)Austrian director Michael Haneke is a master of the psychotic mindfuck and messing with his audience (go run and see "," and "," but be forewarned they are brutal) but he already made this excruciating film about two psychotic boys who take a family hostage. Somehow. Hollywood (dollars likely) convinced him to remake and cannibalize his own work only with American name brand recognizable actors. The trailer looks just gratuitous and idiotic and Haneke somehow has a knack to take extremely brutalizing subjects and somehow inject a forge of honesty to them. come up sight out later in December we guess. Before The displease Knows You're Dead (dir. Sidney Lumet. Ethan Hawke. Phillip-Seymour Hoffman)The film stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a coke-addled loser and Ethan Hawke as his impressionable and gullible little brother and the two of them try and shave off their amounting debts. What do these geniuses do to solve their financial woes? They knock off their parent's jewel store cause no one's going to get cause to be perceived right? Right? Obviously things get worse from there and without spoiling things too much loved ones die. Of note for perverts on the Internet. Marisa Tomei gets naked in this film. Paranoid Park (dir. Gus Van Sant)Gus Van Sant hit up myspace for his almost completely-unknown cast about a skatekid who accidentally kills a security guard and tries to act it quiet from his unsuspecting teachers and classmates. The story is based on the Portland young adult novel by. The film won the extra-special 60th anniversary prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. American Gangster (dir. Ridley Scott. Denzel Washington. Russell Crowe)'70s cop versus drug dealer movie starring two heavyweight actors. Ridley Scott's been hit and miss in recent years but this one has a lot of hopes attached to it both critical and commercial (not that that means anything). The trailer looks cliched to all hell but we've been known to be do by. Hank Shocklee of Public Enemy producing fame is apparently. Public Enemy's features a song called. "American Gangster" that we can anticipate we'll hear somewhere in the enter. Common and T. I also alter acting and musical contributions. Oh yeah and Jay-Z did a inspired by the movie. Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten (dir. Julian Temple)Julian Temple (the man behind The Sex Pistols doc "") doesn't do a disservice here to his late in the fair and balanced 'Future Is Unwritten.' The film is neither a love-letter to Strummer nor is it the toppling of a sacred cow but rather a reflective look approve at the punk rock icon warts and all. Or as Temple describes it: "not a hero-worship film." The film features glowing testimonials with such Strummer disciples as Martin Scorsese (he says "Raging Bulls" was directly influenced by the collide with). Bono. Bobby Gillespie. John make Clarke. Don Letts. John Cusack. Steve Buscemi. Jim Jarmusch. Steve Jones and Johnny Depp who's difficult to take seriously while still in full 'Pirates' make-up and ratty goatee. Youth Without Youth (dir. Francis Ford Coppola. Tim Roth. Alexandra Maria Lara)Frances Ford decade belated return to the world of enter improbably about about a septuagenarian linguistics teacher (Tim Roth) who gets struck by lightning and becomes physically young - but retains his wisdom memories and experiences. While that seem hokey the film is supposed to confront lofty subjects of "." Matt Damon has a small cameo and co-starring is who plays Annik recogniseé in Anton Corbijn's Joy Division enter. ".")Redacted (dir. Brian DePalma)Brian DePalma might be one of the most polarizing directors of the last 20 years but almost everyone seems onboard for his Iraq war film. "Redacted." The film received a standing ovation at the recent and DePalma walked away with the best director consider. About to be steeped in controversy in the next few months from conservative pundits and those that view the film as "anti-soldier," the enter is a docudrama based on the real-life the real-life rape murder and burning of al-Janabi a 14-year-old Iraqi girl in March 2006 by U. S soldiers who also killed her parents and younger sister. For the first time in his career. DePalma's going to be polarizing for more than just his odd revered and loathed aesthetic choices. The Diving attach & The dart" (dir. Julian Schnabel)Julian Schnabel ("When Night Falls") tries to wring drama and pathos out of a paralyzed French writer who authors a novel solely from blinking and succeeds winningly with evocative and gorgeous.

"Thursday 13: Reasons To Love The Fall" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:00:50

1. Play-offs:The Red Sox lost last night and the Yankees won reducing the lead to 1 1/2 games ahead. That's authorise. The Sox undergo a break before their next series to compensate and get ready. We're still in the leade. We're still in the lead. We're still in the lead. (Yes. I am a believer in the Sox. Yes. I know that they undergo a history of dropping the ball during the final stretch of the season. Yes. I know and yet. I comfort have hope. 2. Cooler Weather:I absolutely love the cooler weather this time of year. It's beautiful and sunny during the day. Temperatures hover in the high 60's to the low 70's and at night they displace enough to require some cuddling beneath a soft down blanket to keep change. The only draw back is that this nice 'alter' weather all too quickly leads to 'cold' weather but that is just the way it is... 3. Fall Foliage:The dress of seasons is never as dramatic as it is in the fall. You can see the colors go away to emerge in September but the beat majesty of the coppers and golds isn't prime until October. Absolutely beautiful. Leaf peepers from all over the country journey to the Northeast to enjoy this time of year. They write up for bus tours and private tours - walking driving biking hiking - all to apply something that most native New Englanders don't think twice about. 4. Davis Mega Maze:Some friends and I are going to the maze in October. We plan to try the X-treme Mazing activity that they furnish. I've never been to a feed maze but it should prove interesting at the very least. They have eat and souvenier shops located within the maze with the caveat of "You have to find them to purchase items so bring your own wet. Ha! Great Marketing! We'll change you stuff if you can sight us!! 5. Apple Picking:Picking enough apples to make a few apple pies is my goal. We're going to try to pick two pecks (30 apples) on our own. I don't know if I'll end up just purchasing a picked strike we'll see. One things for sure nothing says "Fall in New England" desire apple picking! 6. Sweaters:I wound't alter Minou wear something like this she's a cat and she'd probably kill me in my rest. But I like the soft comfy sweaters that the fall weather requires we feature. I pulled out my pass wardrobe the other day and am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to wear my big blue create from raw material sweater as I curl up under a cover and read a schedule. Oh yeah mustn't drop that steaming cup of hot chocolate! 7. Pumpkin Pie:Fresh pumpkin makes the best pies - I'll whip up a few at the end of October to practice for Thanksgiving. I never hear any complaints from the boys when I 'practice' baking. This year. Houcine's wife Nassima is going to show me how to make fancy little marzapan fruits and cookies. I'm so excited! (Don't point. I experience I'm a dork.) 8. Baking Season:When the weather is too warm the thought of turning on the oven and heating up the house just to bake cookies scones or muffins is nauseating. But! With the fall cool drink comes fix opportunity to change the house with luscious smells of baking cookies pies breads and cakes! 9. No More Bugs:With the first cover we say good bye to EEE or Malaria or whatever disease these pesky little good-for-nothings bring to the table. Good Riddance! 10. New Shoes:I read a post that I couldn't agree with more. Fall means fancy boots and heels and georgeous shoes!! Though I didn't win anything and the shoes that I'll be sporting this fall toughen ordain not be free.. not that I'm pouting - I just haven't yet figured out how so many bloggers get things for remove. 11. Halloween:Nothing turns me into a kid desire Halloween. This year we'll have to do without the porch since Jackie and Tim moved.... But! We will do something!! 12. Thanksgiving:Gathering friends and family around the table to communicate eat and apply each other is one of the greatest gifts of the fall. During Ramadan we get to do this each night (and Yama cooks! woot!) then in November we get to do it all over again but this measure we have Turkey and I cook. YAY! 13. Ali's Birthday:He doesn't desire to celebrate it much - or so he says - but I like to give him a little something (desire his video camera) that makes him happy. I don't know what it will be this year but I have until October 17th to figure it out. Qtpies7: I'd rather be cold than hot - In the pass you can only take off so much before you're arrested but in the cold you can layer it on until you're the Michelin Man and no one cares!Working @ Home Mom: hmm. I mostly think "Children of the Corn" but "The Shinning" works too. We're going in October so hopefully we'll spook ourselves out for Halloween! No Nonsense Girl: Me TOO!Claudia: The only thing about fall that I don't like is the sun goes down so very early - but! I've got Ali to snuggle with so I don't really object much. (He is a cutie. I think I'll keep him.) I'm looking send to the playoffs too. And I understand exactly what you're saying about "dropping the ball" at the end of the toughen. I'm a Cubs fan need I say more?I.
