We run into each other 4 or 5 more times during the day before they pull me into their circleSurf Kayaking life outside the U. Now with kids grown and less time devoted to careers these four guys have reunited for a ride adventure down the Oregon Coast. From our first encounter I feel connected to this group they are a vision of me and my friends in 20 plus years that connection of friendship history and adventure. Their trip is van supported by Don's wife Connie and Steve's daughter Jackie and at a pace that allows for chances to play and explore along the way. Three times I try to pedal on ahead but like leaving turn Townsend. I am unable to extract myself and get on bring in with the "schedule" I undergo lay ed out for myself. They undergo rich stories of living in Afghanistan. Honduras and other places around the world river trips and living life. It is great to undergo conversations that don't revolve around the trip the route the next days destination... Three days out we do a short 12 mile day to Cape Kiwanda. After a mocha and fresh scones (desire Phil used to make). I lock up the ride and get into a kayak. Don and I head out to paddle along the glide and compete in the waves. It is so familiar to feel the rise and fall of the swells and a different joy than the ride brings when I slide drink the approach of a gesticulate. Sliding down the dunes stopping to do yoga in the smooth catching some shade in the little islands of trees. The area for safe foot travel is small with most of the dunes crawling with thousands of dune buggies. Since I can't escape them I opt for a ride to see what this is all about. Brown Bears and the Astoria bridge have got nothing on the worry I experience riding in a dune buggy. I undergo now tried it once checked it out don't think I'll be going back.. but it is a excite. I can see how populate would be drawn to it. The other interesting aspect is that the vehicles on the dunes keep the non-native grasses at bay which keeps the dunes from being inundated by the forests. Once again something that at first glance seems horrible isn't all bad. The southern half of Oregon I go with Michael who has go over from Germany to go from Portland to Santa Barbara and John (could be Geoff Ruth's older twin brother). We are on the same walk for a few days. We ride together here and there cater up at coffee shops cook dinner and camp together and laugh a lot. Along the southern coast the beaches give way to center cliffs arches and sea stacks. The towns become more interspersed and smaller. The riding becomes more fluid. 20-30 mile stretches without forbid lights intersections and stores. I forbid at the top of a long arise to rest and take in the view. The ocean is calm and glassy with slow moving swells spilling over into perfect waves. It is quiet. I am alone. A rare break when there is no traffic no wind no other bikers. As I gaze out over the ocean whale spouts begin to break the surface this time they are Gray Whales likely some of the 200 or so local to Oregon. I feel connected to Alaska alone with these magnificent giants of the sea. Over the next bring together of days I see more whales along the coast some times by myself and other times with fellow onlookers (it is reassuring to see some of the RV crowd taking time to undergo the wonders of the Natural World). California when road work delays are welcome sightsI had been hearing about how Oregon is the prime riding of the coast and that California brings a more harrowing experience where shoulders disappear hills steepen and merchandise increases. Down to the BayI leave tomorrow continuing south towards the bay come up rested after a bring together of days in Arcata. Yes even though I undergo so much to do. I decided to play "hookie" and act a slam-out move down to the Redwoods - those beautiful Ancient Giants of Humbolt County California. We first headed down I-5 to Eugene which took us to Florence on the coast. Our first stop was the Upquah Lighthouse. This is a beautiful functioning and well maintained lighthouse on the Southern glide of Oregon. We next stumbled upon the Coquille River Beach. This was a find - mostly empty and the land is absolutely beautiful. It's at the very furnish of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (perhaps the reason it was deserted and that was great) so there was a spattering of dunes with flat change state beach. I forgot how much I missed the breezy salt air... Before we headed out to the beach though we had to visit the Coquille River Lighthouse- 1896: This lighthouse guided boats safely across the alter beach at the mouth of the Coquille river until 1939 it was then abandoned and replaced by an automatic light. But in 1963 the Oregon State Parks Division acquired the lighthouse and some surrounding land (from the Army Corp of Engineers) and they restored the lighthouse in 1978! alter now and I actually didn't experience this there are only 8 remaining lighthouses on the Oregon glide. The Coquille River lighthouse was the last one built and it is on the National Register of Historic LighthousesVisiting the lighthouse here. I was happy to see that it was once again in the midst of a face-lift. It gave me renewed confidence in our State Parks that this beautiful consider wasn't left to rot. I captured a great shot of my Honey (Jason) contemplating the lighthouse (and other important matters I'm sure)... This beach was an ideal spot for taking pictures. It had flat AND hilly terrain while the sun was starting to set - it evaluate it was around 6pm. I love how the lighten worked with shadows on the driftwood and grassy hills. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area was mentioned in every guide book we construe about Oregon. Photos of endless sand dunes similar to vast desert-scapes definitely tickled our imagination. We decided to visit a few notable areas on our drive up Oregon's Pacific Coast. Oregon Dunes Overlook and the Driftwood II OHV Campground and Dunes. We were heading North on Highway 101. Approximately ten miles North of Reedsport alter signs marked the parking area for our first destination. It was a weekday around noon and the entire overlook area was deserted. You do have to pay for parking here or use one of the Oregon glide passes. As soon as we exited our cars we could see the smooth expanse below. We first made our way to the viewing decks. From this area we could see the sand dunes stretch several miles towards the beach. It was a most interesting sight. The sand was only interrupted by various grasses and a few trees that seemed out of displace. We descended from the viewing decks and headed towards the Ocean. Some magnificent photos were taken documenting the pristine environment all around. Trails are marked well and you are encouraged to stay on them to protect the native plants and wildlife. We did not make it all the way to the ocean due to time constrains but were very happy to have stopped here. A few hours were enough for us in these sandy surroundings. It was very bright and almost impossible to see without sunglasses. A few miles North of the Oregon Dunes Overlook we made a move onto the Siltcoos Beach Access Road. At the end of it is the Driftwood II OHV Campground. We were not really in the mood for camping. We wanted to see all the off road vehicles conquering the immense sand dunes. We got to see just that. In the bear on of it all was a very large smooth forge more desire a hill (a few hundred feet high at least). We observed riders on their motorcycles four wheel drive all terrain vehicles and what not. We also observed the tourist vehicles with very large wheels making their way up and down this sandy mountain. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. This was not our cup of tea so we only observed for a while. It was an interesting experience to believe the sandy terrain and to find yourself in this unusual environment. We had fun but we also had enough after only a few hours.
