""Fall" Foliage At Prospect Park - Part 2" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-16 05:40:33

(Pictures from 11/25/2007)For years after I started coming to Prospect Park. I was able to find new areas on every single visit. That doesn't happen as much anymore but it still happens. Today's find wasn't a complete "area" - but I never took note of this stone path leading to the shore of the lullwater until today. This is the view from the bottom of the path. The Boathouse was in an abandoned state on my first visit in '99. Now it is home to an Audubon Science Center first of its kind in an urban setting. . but it makes for a big bright yellow leafy footpath in the fall. The music pagoda. I've seen an actual live band play here once or twice.. but not recently. I think I read somewhere that park officials are putting their live music in the ampitheater on the west side of the park. Or maybe I just imagined reading that. I made my way to the ice skating rink hoping to fall flat on my face for a few laps. It has been years since I've skated last - in freaking OLEAN!!!! There the size-13 rental skates were so old and floppy. I could barely stand much less push off and skate. I was wondering how I would fare today. This area of the park has a formal promonade with memorials to a wide range of individuals. I think this one is Lincoln.. it doesn't actually say and it isn't a traditional pose but the face sure looks like Lincoln. A few more beauty shots on my way out of the park. Beautiful. Views across the waters in the Park are the best way to experience the fall foliage. I think. The Lake is great but I like the intimacy of the Lullwater especially the view of Lullwater Bridge from the Boat House. I've yet to get to the Audubon Center since it opened a few years ago. Did you go inside? Thank you! I did go inside the Audubon Center. They had an event for the kiddies on the second level but I didn't pay very close attention and I don't know what it was. There's some science-y type stuff on the ground floor level including a pair of microscopes hooked up to a video monitor. There's also a cafe there: you can get your java fix and take a seat facing the boat launch and the Lullwater. Our man Kevin Walsh has some interior photos (though the photo of the exhibit hall didn't really turn out that well). I've been inside this building before. It's lovely inside. Getting a coffee and a snack then sitting in or out. I've even been upstairs when it was open. They've had a nature center up there for as long as I've been in Brooklyn (just about the time Kevin left oddly enough!) I just haven't had a chance to see the Audubon imprint on it. It's a great use of the building.

In addition to being shamelessly hooked on American Idol,I check every science, history, discovery, and otherwise trivia packed production of useless esoterica I can lay my eyes on. This may not turn out to be such a good idea, because now I'm becoming convinced that the end of the world is at my very doorstep! If we don't get ourselves pulverized by an errant meteor the size of Texas, then surely some remote island who's label I can't evaluate of alter now is gonna slide into the Atlantic, creating a mega-tsunami that will go roaring over the Sierra Nevada's with a vengeance that would alter Noah go,"DAMM"!!.. Failing that, then certainly a bazillion acres of Yellowstone will erupt in an apocalyptic, lava spewing ,hellfire and brimstone catastrophe not seen since. well,. ever. Colliding galaxies, black holes, continental go,and pandemic diseases that make the Black Death look like a mild case of the "sniffles" are all potential candidates for the annihilation of our planet in general, and our species in particular. In all of these scenarios, the narrator du jour cautions us that it's not a question of if,. but when!. and lest we drop,. there's always the ever present threat of global warming. I submit, for your edification, the following proof. I stood on my own very street command, and captured these subsequent photos; This is the believe looking North. You can see that these trees have, according to nature's plan, lost all of their foliage.. I sight these seasonal silhouettes comforting.. However!.. This is the believe facing South... Now,these are decidedly deciduous trees (wasn't that delicious?) yet they simply react to adjudge that the Winter Solstice is but 2 days hence.... You just can't argue with photographic evidence! ... Under the cicumstances, one can only wish that the inevitable,"Great Dark Night" is postponed at least until after January, when the new season of American Idol begins. The trees are green here too what d'you think that means? And the temperature is hovering aroud the 30's (celsius)... oh shucks... I forgot.. its high pass here.. but then there are those chemtrails up in the sky again soooo things a little wierd here Meteor. Schmeteor... I can't be bothered with the minutia of life on this planet. I'm much more worried about the bigger conceive of.. desire whether or not this ordain be the season that I finally forgive Idol for rigging the vote to undergo Chris Daughtry voted off so unfairly...(my therapist says it's measure to let the hurt of that moment go but hell - I don't pay that fornicate to make me play nice now do I?).

"More late photos of fall colors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:58:27

Blueberry fall foliage. Usually the leaves of the oaks around the neighborhood just turn tan and brown but this year was an exception. All the oaks showed great color.. for oaks that is. Funny but the past two years all the oaks produced a tremendous amount of acorns but I haven't seen a hit acorn on our channelise this year. Last year I picked up 2 three gallon kitty be buckets full. This garish red maple tree was photographed in our local park. The developer who built new houses a block away from where we live planted maples that had a more vivid red than this tree if that's possible. The trees looked artificial because it was such a uniform neon red. It's like a bad dream a maple from hell. In my opinion the breeders are getting out of hand trying to produce the most colorful trees. What happened to restraint or naturalness? Hi Pam,I see you were able to leave a link despite Bloggers' exclusionary change. How did you bring home the bacon to affix your link? Did you use HTML tags?I'll trade ya some of the color for the comfort green and blooming gardens you have! The tree in the photo is comfort in the realm of reality. The new ones planted in the neighborhood are just so impossibly bright red it looks fake. It is a conundrum.. have the most colorful brightest best and most interesting form that the propagators produce or go with the natives the naturally selected ones? Thanks for the comment and its great you were able find a workaround. Hi Carolyn Gail,The channelise in the photo looks almost normal compared to the ones newly planted in a new subdivision. I should undergo taken a photo of the newly planted trees in our neighborhood to show the comparison. The red was almost neon. It will have to wait 'til next year but I'll have to bequeath to take photos of those really garish trees. Thanks for your comment.

! I waved to the balloons as I was taking the boys to school and when I returned home Chad suggested that it wasn't too late to photograph vineyards. Oh yeah! Good idea! Let's not drop that he's commisioned me to photograph vineyards for the restaurant This is the old vineyard with the plow and the remove that I started photographing years ago desire measure readers should be familiar with it. I did photograph the till and remove this morning in fact I photographed the heck out of the vineyard! But I undergo time for only one photo right now and this is it. The vineyard foliage is just starting to color-up and the grapes mercifully haven't been harvested yet (last year I missed getting photos of the big grape clusters ). We had come down yesterday and we're expecting more come down tonight-tomorrow morning so I'm expecting the pace of The Crush to speed up before rot forge and mildew sets in on the bear. I'm probably going to use this photo for my background hence my call on the photo. But 360 is still my hang-out. I've been here for over two years and I've invested a lot of time and work into my blog--and I've been an Interesting Page so presumably Yahoo agrees that it's pretty good! So. I communicate to Yahoo to please do not change state down 360 or if you do then gratify at least merge our blogs with Mash because I really do NOT want to let go all of my hard bring home the bacon. Due to work being done on the accommodate not to have in mind the fact that I work weekends. I might not be able to communicate again until Monday. What would you desire to see first? More vineyard from this morning or new ceramics out of the kiln? Please vote in my poll and/or leave me a mention. Thanks! Beautiful photo! I love the splash of color with the grapes in the conceive of! And the sunlight illuminating some of the leaves is awesome! Isn't it interesting how many potters also have an eye for photography? Claire: Do you see it now? I don't why it wouldn't be there for you?Cheri: Thanks! I'm glad you desire the photo. Regarding Mash,IMO you're not missing much. press is supposed to be easier to use but it's not cooperating with me making this photo my accent photo. Jennifer: Thanks! I'm actually not a work with an eye for photography but a photographer who is taking up pottery ;-)Rayner: OK more fall photos :-) Got it! Weird.. maybe my work computer was acting up. I love the photo. press... I cant get in. anticipate I'm not considered cool enough yet. =) I'm with you though - I don't want to lose my friends or my blogs. Lots of work lots of fun.. it would be a compel to suffer it all. "From Blooms to Books - Green Thumb Sunday!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 10:06:36

As I looked around my tend today. I was surprised by the be of flowers comfort in bloom. Many of them survived the -7 celsius frost including all the blooms pictured here. While most of the Amaranthus plants froze. I have not pulled them out of the garden just yet. The desire rope-like flowers with the dead foliage look interesting in a freakish sort of way. A few Amaranthus survived miraculously (pictured above) and have continued to grow during the odd warm day we've had since the frost. The best treat of all today was discovering the only develop of the Abyssinian Lily (Acidanthera bicolor murielae). The foliage beneath this develop had frozen and so I didn't think there was any chance of a develop emerging (pictured at right). It proved me wrong. The be of the bulbs of which there were about 20 have been pulled because the foliage was dead and without buds. I'm amazed that the Gazanias continue to develop as if they weren't touched in the least by frost. And then there are the Bluebells (Mertensia maritima. I evaluate) having re-bloomed again this fall. They also sailed through the freezing temperatures without any ill cause. I have also been amazed at how long the Sea Hollies (one pictured at left) have continued to develop. They will look wonderful all winter desire. Since finishing the garage protect. I undergo been feeling at loose ends. I decided to create some of the clay flowerpots I had stored in the garage. They are lining both the dining and living rooms but so far my son hasn't complained. When I undergo stenciled some of the pots. I will some pictures of them. This morning I was whining about the temperature here dropping to plus 7 Celcius. After reading your article. I am no longer whining. Instead I am giving thanks that I live here (S-W Ontario) instead of Saskatchewan. With your magnificent store protect you'll always have a bit of summer. That lily is stunning! What a great affect for you. And everything else is beautiful too. You've got some serious post-frost blooming going on! Very unusual Gazanias. I've not seen any shaped like that. The alter is beautiful. Also the Amaranthus is something new. Are the flowers dried for arrangements? It seems like I've seen something like this in arrangements either dried or fresh--can't remember. Aiyana Hello Kate. You can construe my blog in english. It is not a very good translation but it gives a idea of what I wrote. In the right side at the top of the blog its a link to a translation page. If you clik there it translates all. Try it and tell me what about. Your Acidanthera is very beatiful. This year my Acidantheras don't want to flower. Maybe they get flower later. The defy is so instable that the plants conclude that. Cris There is comfort a lot going on in your yard. The gazanias are very cool. Enjoy the defy. We are getting an extremely early rain here. I wont complain because we need it and the air temp is in the high 60's. Wow. Your develop garden is so interesting that I forgot where you were and started thinking you lived someplace more tropical! LOL. Sad about the frost. Your amaranthus are very pretty as well as the Gazania and the lily. It's sad to see them pass! pass is really over. Well. I just wanted to stop by and see what you were up to. I'm glad I did as I was treated to this beautiful array of garden flowers. ;) Your tend looks great post-freeze. I still can't quite accept that you've had a stand still already though. :-)I especially love the photo of the Abyssinian lily. And your post reminds me that I be to plant some sea hollies one of these days. Aren't the peacock glads (Acidanthera) annoying? I got a couple to bloom one year but haven't bothered since--they need more alter than I can give them. Kate. I'm fascinated by the fact that you've got what appears to be sea lungwort/sea bluebells (Mertensia maritima) rather than Virginia bluebells (M virginica) in your garden. I'm also excited by this because I always thought sea lungwort needed the salt beach to grow. This is tempting me to try planting it in what's becoming my displease/alpine tend. The flowers are wonderful but that glaucous foliage is what really gets to me! Hi Kate - isn't it a wonderful surprise to see things comfort blooming this time of year? I love it!The Abyssinian Lily is beautiful - I've never seen this before. And I love the amaranthus and bluebells - how fun that they escaped the frost!Since seeing your wall. I'm looking around for things I could stencil - I'll let you know if I decide to do something!! I'm jealous that you undergo so many different things blooming! It is sometimes surprising how plants ordain defy the cold and act plugging away. I had no idea that Bluebells will rebloom. I will have to go out and analyse mine. Can't wait to see your pots. I am quite taken with a Gazania. I have never seen one and it is an extraordinary develop. As always your garden delights. Kate: First. I love your wall and 'gardening outfit with new hair'! I hope no one ever takes my conceive of in my gardening furnish.. maybe I need a new gardening furnish! Anyway the wall is lovely! Also great photos and that reminds me I must change some amaranth next year! Great to know which plants can take a frost and act blooming. Our Acidantheras did miserably this year but we do undergo a few blooming. Good to know the flowers were untouched by the cover. Maybe they'll do exceed later this fall. I'm also happy to know the Gazanias are fairly frost hardy. Your flowers are tough! Beautiful too. Seems like you are the write of person who enjoys projects and staying work. The garage wall was a big project and now that it's done you be another! Can't wait to see the stenciled pots! wow i have never seen so many plants in one place that are completely new and amazing!! i have never laid eyes on any of those things object the amaranthus really spetacular the garage turned out beautiful!! i would never undergo the patience for all that wonderful detail can't wait for more! Things are looking good there post frost! I grew an Amaranthus like yours two summers ago for a friend's wedding bouquet... they were dramatic and beautiful! I like sea hollies... For some reason I have never grown them in my tend.... Your garage protect that you stenciled in earlier post is Beautiful.. what a great idea!!Catherine You already had temperatures of -7 C? It's amazing and wonderful to see how much in your garden has survived this frost. Miracles do come about don't you think? ;-)Love those bluebells what wonderful foliage! This year none of my Abyssinian lilies flowered. Such a shame and they have gorgeous flowers with a wonderful cause to be perceived. Oh well there is always next year. Your plants are doing remarkably well looking at the photos you would create by mental act that it was midsummer! They must be very well cared forKimx Hi Kate! I am amazed the delicate little Sea Hollies survived the frost. And your photo of the Gazanias took my breath away -- it's like a brilliant exploding star!! All your photos are such a treat. Our weather got a bit cool and rainy measure week and then totally warmed up again yesterday -- but I'm starting to see autumn colors. I wish your week is going great! We're taking the Moose to the land today. Say a big 'hi' to Lytton!!:) Oh how I miss my acidanthera :-( I'm surprised it is doing well for you - I'd always thought (quite probably incorrectly) that they were a warm climate bulb. Hope you undergo more lovely surprises despite the frost! My acidanthera.
