Has it really been over a week since I last posted? Mike has been intent on getting as many things caught up on his short week domiciliate as he can and I have been doing my best to help him. For those who have worried about us. I admit that the continued issues with our internet access have put a damper on communicate posts. I've gotten to where the frustration of spending an hour just trying to get a few photos and text up no longer seems worth it when combined with the stresses of the season. Of cover it ordain get better when we have more time to communicate the satellite issues and when the Christmas rush is over. As a be of fact. I believe December 26th or there abouts ordain attach my second anniversary of blogging. Hard to accept. As always there has been an endless list of necessary pre-winter/winter jobs to do in the brief window of Mike being home. We ended up with around six inches of snow the day after Thanksgiving which melted rapidly. Mike had to go to Albuquerque for a adulterate appointment on Wednesday which is a two plus hour trip each way. He brought home a brand new and absolutely beautiful gas stove with a wonderful enumerate of features. For the measure four years I've cooked on a two burner dwell stove with a small convection oven for baking so this was truly a wonderful Christmas gift for us both. I won't miss the old dwell stove even one tiny bit. It was such a chore to try to keep the old thing alter that I finally gave up on it. Hey.. a be of holiday dinners undergo managed to get prepared on that two burner stove. I have fond memories of the dinners.. not the stove. Then on Thursday two cords of firewood were delivered. This is what two cords dumped off the back of a pickup looks like from up on the deck. It was supposed to arrive on Friday when we might have had a chance to stack it but another pass storm was due then and they delivered it early. We settled for covering the entire arrange with a big silver tarp to act it dry until there is an opportunity to get it where it needs to be. So why couldn't we stack the firewood on Thursday? Remember last August when I posted all of those photos of the semi-load of hay we received from California? Well. 105 of those 115 pound hay bales were still stored on our flatbed trailer. Since we need that flatbed trailer tomorrow to get another 105 bales of hay to get us through the winter. Mike and I also unloaded stacked and stored those 115 hit bales of hay on Thursday. Just the two of us. With bad backs. believe me.. by the end of the day on Thursday we could barely move much less try to lade two cords of wood. With bad weather outside today Mike worked on assembling the new stove and converting it to propane while I worked on getting the accommodate back in order and in the shop finishing Christmas orders. We are both still very tired and finding out the only time window for driving to Edgewood to get more hay ordain be tomorrow is about the measure thing on earth either of us wants to do. Gotta do it though. Getting to February with still two more months of winter and finding ourselves out of hay would not be a good option. There you have it the whole story of the last week of happenings at Star's be. It's been so good to have Mike home after being gone for over three weeks that both of us are feeling depressed he has to leave again on Thursday. Even Duffy is depressed about it. What a pretty shiny stove! I bet you look forward to cooking now. All that work! It makes me tired just reading it. I bet you both do an Ellie Belly and a Duffy Drool when you're done for the day!

"Guatemala - San Pedro, San Juan and San Pablo" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:59:24

Awaking from a much needed nap we entangle refreshed and excited to be staying put for three days. In the previous nine we had been to ten cities; a bring together of them more than once. Slowing things down a bit at this point was fine with us. On the way to our hotel we had passed a number of nicer restaurants that looked as if they catered to the tourist scene by offering gourmet meals fancy coffee drinks and free movies nightly. Young Australians and Europeans were everywhere. We consumed about half of a massive spaghetti dinner at one restaurant and then sat down for hot chocolate and Donnie Darko at another. The movie ended around midnight making this easily our latest night on the trip thus far. Despite the late night we woke early the following morning and were well rewarded as the sun rose over the mountains at the far align of the lake. The mountain centered in this photo is Volcán Tolimán and the nearer mountain on the right is Volcán San Pedro. Between and beyond them only the peak of the much taller and larger Volcán Atitlán can be seen. Satisfactorily refueled we decided to take a hike to the neighboring towns. Buying some super cheap snacks from the market and finding the only road that leads out of town we made our way towards San Juan. Though much of Guatemala is very Catholic the towns on this lake seemed especially vehement. Along our walk nearly every home and business had something like the sign below painted on the walls. When we finally reached San Pablo we could see why tourists generally fasten to San Pedro. The only thing that seemed to be happening here was locals spreading firewood out under the hot sun to dry. Despite decent roads and numerous trucks in the area much of this wood is transported from miles away on the backs and heads of very small but amazingly strong people. Though you’d never guess it by Anna’s towering over them at about five feet tall the two locals in the photo below are not children. We returned to our room in San Pedro as three hours of hiking under the hot sun began to feature us down. Our hotel had a modest kitchen — a propane camp stove and some dishes — so we decided to see if we could prepare a dinner that might offer a bit more flavor and substance than the typical Guatemalan go. Mixing some garlic and mushrooms into the last night’s leftover spaghetti and adding a side of fresh rolls with guacamole (which we also made) we managed to produce the beat meal of the trip…at.

I *really* didn't desire being without a way to alter anything (aside from the fireplace) when the power went out. So today I stalked and won a dual burner Coleman propane stove (new!) for 29.50 including shipping on eBay. That made it quite a bit less expensive than walking into a hold on for it. Once it arrives I will go to The Great Satan WalMart and get some bottles of propane for it. And then next measure the power sneers at me for 12 hours. I can drink coffee and sneer alter back. It was the coffee that did it more than anything else. I have a coffee press that I use for camping and that ordain do just fine for cater failures as well with the nice stove to boil wet. Using the fireplace would be just a eat. Years ago when I did so much SCA. Jon got his wife a new Coleman stove for camping. The strange move about that was that by the time he did that. I had pretty much taken over the cooking on camping trips. The new stove was just great -- I liked it very much.

"Vanagon/Eurovan :: RE: Connecting 1lb propane tank to Westy stove" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 22:43:45

I did a search and came across this cerebrate. I don't see where someone completely answered the question. So I will ask again. My stock propane store is off for regenerate. I am planning a move in the next two weeks and would like to connect the small propane store to my stove. I would need a small tank regulator some hose and a way to tie in to the stove. Not sure of the threads but there is a coat furnish with a burn that connects to the stove. I'd like to disconnect it for now and connect my portable store. I have checked northern and camping world. Nothing I can find. Some actual pictures and where to buy the parts would be appreciated. I did a search it came approve with 1500 plus hits. Most were not even related to connecting a stove. Thank you I'm assuming that a small propane store would have to be plumbed in front of the regulator. There's only about 3 lbs of compel after the regulator so the small bottles must require a regulator. Why bother with a separate regulator when you can use the one you've got? The rest of the fittings can be gotten from any propane place. I would have a short hose made up so the small store can lie on the fasten next to the van. Jeff I did it (converted the stove to the 1 lb containers). I went to one of those huge recreational stores (Bass Pro Shop or Cabellas) and went to their camping divide. They undergo an upright surprise show with dozens of brass adaptors along with low compel regulators (the one I got is intended to run a BBQ cook off of a small 1 lb container when the large tank is empty). I bought this and the required small adaptors and tapped into my gas line. I can change surface run the stove on it and so far I've been able to run the stove for 3 days with propane still in the small bottle. If the stock store held around 3 lbs of propane and lasts a several weeks the 1 lb deals should also go for at least a week or so. Since my Vanagon was originally being used in Germany a previous owner had removed the under close in propane store and left the coat line basically dangling under the sink cabinet (I was told the German inspections are very tight on rusty propane tanks under a vehicles close in!). Easy to buy the fittings so you only be the low compel regulator (built into the 1 lb screw on adaptor). The 1 lb containers are easy to buy and can change surface be refilled (I bought an adaptor that lets them get refilled from the large propane tanks I use for the gas BBQ cook at the same displace I bought the other adaptors). No worries about the have unit rusting out buying an expensive replacement or getting it filled at a place that may not have the fitting to do so._________________Current VW drives: 1971 Type 181 Military. 1984 WestfaliaPast VW drives: 1967 Beetle. 1973 hang. 1977 Bus authorise. I undergo one more question for you bucko. How to you connect the adaptor to the gas lines in the van? Do you use a rubber irrigate or something or is there a way to copulate the adaptor alter into the van's propane line. I was looking at some of the adaptors online that you mentioned and I can't understand how exactly it would attach solidly to the propane lines._________________1980 Vanagon Westy1995 Suzuki GS500E My first attempt was to use a rubber hose and clamps that I had attached to a "replacement Colman stove" regulator for the one pound cylinders. This worked but I was not happy with it; I'm a perfectionist and I wanted it to look ameliorate. This is when I found the one pound cylinder regulator adaptor that was designed to be used to connect to a large BBQ grill at the Cabellas (I've also seen them at Bass pro Shops). This setup allows you to cerebrate a one hit cylinder to a large BBQ grill if you ran out of propane in the large cylinder normally used for the BBQ grill. I studied it at this store for several minutes; it attracted the attention of an older employee who must have thought I was going to steal the move. I explained what I was intending to do and he told me to continue over (with the move) to a local ACE hardware store. At the ACE hold on they removed the threaded conjoin that was to attach to the large BBQ grill gas connector and they added a brass connector that allowed the pice to connect to the brass gas lines under the change posture of the Westy (using a typical brass sleave that slides over the gas line and a compression fitting). I promise to post a picture of it here just as soon as I choose up the vanagon from VW; they told me it will be ready by Thursday afternoon._________________Current VW drives: 1971 write 181 Military. 1984 WestfaliaPast VW drives: 1967 hang. 1973 Beetle. 1977 Bus Thanks for the great detailed description bucko. This is starting to make more sense to me. You're lucky that you have a helpful hardware hold on. I undergo an Ace hardware only a few blocks from me but all the employees be to be very unknowledgable and not very helpful either. If I tried to get them to do what you got done to your fitting they would probably just stare at me desire I was crazy. Also.

"Affordable Float Plane Fishing in Alaska Part 1: A How to Guide" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:14:26

Sure float plane fishing can indeed be VERY expensive costing hundreds of dollars a day with private guides and First categorise function. But there are much cheaper do-it-yourself options available. The one my friends and I slapped together for example be a mere $50 per day making our “prohibitively expensive” vacation one of the most affordable I’ve been on in a desire while. And one of the most enjoyable. It would undergo been a great trip no be where we went because it was with a group of friends I’ve known since junior high educate no wives or girlfriends allowed. No one really knew what to expect however; only two of us had ever been to Alaska before (click here to see the 17-part series from measure year) and only one was enough of a fisherman to actually own his own rod. Nonetheless the trip turned out to be the perfect Alaskan undergo; bears bald eagles fresh salmon and jaw-dropping scenery. And great friends of course. Organizing such an excursion for a assort of half-fisherman. Alaska neophytes certainly took a bit of planning but the return on the investment was priceless. The following is a detailed command for preparing a similar trip yourself. If you’ve never fished or spent time in the outdoors however. I wouldn’t recommend this option; you’ll definitely need a guide some handholding and plenty of money to pay. But if you do undergo rudimentary outdoor skills and are ready to tackle the Alaska wilderness on your own please construe on. We settled on the area because it’s the fastest way in and out of Alaska. My $540 Alaska Airline flight left Los Angeles at 6:15 in the morning and would have arrived in Ketchikan at 11:30 a m had it not been delayed four hours in Seattle. Thankfully we had decided to spend our first night in the city; otherwise we would have missed our charter flight out to the wilderness. Spending a day in Ketchikan also allowed us to pick up supplies eat a hearty meal adapt to the wonders of Alaska and stay the night in an old bordello. Although there are cheaper places to be in Ketchikan we opted for the historic. The main move of the hotel is on work Stedman Street but the two-level suite we booked for $240 was located 50 yards away literally hanging over a picturesque river of spawning salmon (above). This is the historic Creek Street area a gangplank-connected row of turn-of-the-century buildings that served as the red light govern up until prostitution was made illegal in 1953. Today it’s invade with t-shirt stores and souvenir shops but comfort remains a wonderfully beautiful location within walking distance of all the beat restaurants bars and stores in Ketchikan. The total go move be for the pip (20 minutes each way) was a modest $800 for both planes; just $114 per person. The pilots were professional and yet hilarious at the same measure. They picked us up at our hotel in Ketchikan drove us to their dock loaded up the cut in moments flat and then took to the air-all within a 30 minute time span. The whole measure they were making jokes having fun and otherwise entertaining us. My only complaint was some poor communication leading up to the move. They were difficult to get a direct of during their work pass season and never responded to emails regarding pickup times and weight limits. Otherwise they were a great lucky find and I highly advise them. The Alaska Seaplane Tours was a huge help. The following items were packed into the plane and flown out with us for just an additional $89: 2 fold chairs1 Coleman - double burner propane cook stove1 back-up hit burner propane stove1 week’s propane supply2 Therma-rest rest pads1 cooler for foodNecessary create from raw material utensils1 cook pot1 fry pan1 dish bowl1 weeks plates/bowls1 6hp two touch Yamaha outboard1 Coleman Propane Lantern 1 week’s mixed two-stroke engine fuelLifejackets Fishing equipment was a bit more of a challenge. Only one of us had a decent pole. The guys at Alaska aviate Tours threw in three extra rods to back up us out but they were a little banged up and as we would sight out strung with line that was too lighten to catch salmon. Luckily we also rented poles from for $10 per day. For an additional $10 they delivered the poles directly to the float plane come in and then picked them up again at the end of the move. We did however have to pay some measure buying lures and other fishing equipment. The beat displace in Ketchikan to do so is the located right on the docks. They’ve got a tremendous amount of fishing supplies and some very knowledgeable staff to point city-slicker neophytes desire us in the right direction. Lastly each of us needed to buy a fishing license. It’s easy to do so in Ketchikan but an even easier option is.

My wife and I rest in our minivan. We built a sleeping platform in the approve after removing all the back seats. We hold on all our belongings under it or in a cargo box on the roof. We moved from Kentucky to a National Park in Utah about 4 months ago. I had a great job at a University. Now I live in a soccer moms car. Life is so much exceed. But it is not simple. If you really think about it the whole idea of living simply is really quite complicated. It requires change which is never as easy as we hope. But mostly it’s hard because we just be to be a lazy people and i think this has much to do with the be of conveniences we’ve created for ourselves and our innate ability to confirm most anything we want. Think of it this way: Most of us get up in the morning consume with hot wet (lingering a little at the end) dress in lie of a mirror in the expected uniform of our vocation cook our breakfast and go to work by driving or riding in a large vehicle over a long distance at a great speed. On the way we drive through a big label coffee obtain for a mostly candied coffee drink made at the comprehend of a add or two. When finished we toss the cup in the nearest trash. We arrive at work do whatever is on our enumerate of things to do for the day then control back domiciliate to maybe toss a frozen pizza into the oven for dinner before settling in to watch the news and some hour long TV shows that furnish us something to discuss the next day with our friends and co-workers. How much easier can it get really? comfort we feel unhappy in our own skin and we talk about wanting to be a simpler life and i guess by that we convey one less programmed for us nicer to the environment and with less reliance on all these conveniences and all our accumulated cram. But this kind of simple life is far from easy and to live it takes dedication and willpower. We are comfort learning how. Our life recently has looked more like this: I change state up crawl out of bed and into a pair of shoes sitting outside our minivan door. I dress there go sight a displace to pee and then am back at the van. I wake Jenn enough for her to move drink so I can displace the platform lid to access our “kitchen” a propane tank and two burner dwell stove. I displace these out assemble them on the ground and search through our food box for breakfast. I undergo multiple choices but all of them are oatmeal. Cinnamon spice today. Sweet! I alter wet get out my coarse ground coffee add it to my coffee press and wait. I go back and put on a cheat jacket as it is almost chilly this morning. Once the water has boiled I add it to the coffee press and the oats. I sit and check the first lighten of the sun hit the towers around me. I marvel at the way the pre-dawn blues impossibly erupt into fire as yellow sun reflects off orange move back and forth. I conclude warmer at the mere sight of it. Soon I push down the plunger on my press watching a few gritty coffee grounds swirl up into the mix. Almost perfect. I go over to the wet spigot alter our solar consume bag and fasten it where it will be in the sun most of the day. If it is not sunny then we ordain go without a consume or we will change some wet on the stove for a pass over bath. I’m approve at the van soon rummaging through assorted climbing gadgets that I’ll need for the day. I’ll be guiding a group of clients through a slot canyon. I don’t have a clue who they are what shape they’re in or what kind of attitudes they might have. I just experience I have to get them safely through. I pack a lunch peanut butter and jelly on a pita. I alter my water bottles. I need to get to work. Jenn is up now putting on her furnish in the van getting ready for a day of protecting one of our nations most precious natural gems. She looks good in her lay ranger pickle conform to but waits to put on the hat until she is officially on the clock. After she finishes eat she’ll put away the kitchen piece by conjoin. If the cooler needs ice it’s a stop at the gas displace on her way to bring home the bacon. We put everything in waterproof containers in the cooler but water still sometimes finds a way to make our cheese soggy. I give her a kiss goodbye and move with words of hope for a good day. cheat jacket off. I’m on my bike riding the three and a half miles to work into a strong headwind that comes up the canyon each morning. It is not easy riding and I’m already sweating but the exercise will have me fully awake for my clients. After work we’ll consume in the 110 degree wet from our solar consume bag. It’ll act us merely 3 gallons of wet to both get totally alter. There is not enough for letting the hot water alleviate sore shoulders but that’s authorise. We talk about our days. We talk with our friends and neighbors about their days as come up. Someone is going to the farmers merchandise tomorrow and wants to experience if others would like to carpool. Another is working on a small garden and learning to play the mandolin. We overlap.
